Fanzone and west stand concourse 07:14 - Aug 24 with 4895 viewsVic

Looks to me like the club did a great job in getting these useable for Saturday.

How unfinished is the inside of the concourse and what will it be like when its someone? I havent seen any photos so im wondering if there was a no photo policy.

I am updating this as a summary of main comments on how it looks and experience of issues faced on accessing the ground.

There is a clear ingress and egress issue which MA will be interested to resolve.

What do i like?

: I like the look of the perimeter, clean lines
: The e ticket machines are quick and easy to use
: I really like the new under west stand enclosure, its got the feel of a big stand with full end to end covered walkway and it will be great in bad weather
: I really like the new facilities and the auto self serve beer kiosk, easy

What do i not like?

: The need to queue into the adjacent park at 2pm rather than queue for the stand itself, it looked worse for those that had to arrive later
: Hundreds of people unable to access the ground quickly even at 2pm, is that not early enough
: The way those exiting the fanzone have to cut across fan queues for the West Stand, this creates a bit more chaos, the flow isnt right
: Being tuned away from the fanzone at 2pm because it is at capacity, i thought this was the right place to enter as a pioneer season ticket holder, rather than create the long queue near North Stand
: Actual communication and people people stewarding, polite, but not able to get messages across to everyone, tiny megaphone with no clear advice

What could be improved?
: Finishing all the facilities in the West Stand enclosure including the tarmac for the fanzone itself and completing the paint work (thats obvious) - it will look great
: Resolve the multi security points, massive queue for bags, queue for fz, queue for e ticket entry
: Keep the fanzone exit and those leaving the fanzone away (close to the SBR stand) from those trying to get into the fanzone and west stand, have us enter further up SAR Way or from the top of the fanzone opposite the bus station

I thought they did too. The Fanzone was obviously more cramped (nice to see and hear Frans Thijssen there) and inside the West Stand concourse it was very plasterboard, work in progress. It looked very unfinished to me, but the bogs worked and so did the ticket machine. Not having much imagination, I’ve no idea what it’ll look like, but given the space - pretty good I suspect.

I’ll be very interested in what progress they make over the next ten days or so and of course what the do about improving processes for getting that number of people in. I’ll be early!

Oh for the days of 8,000 v Stockport, 10,000 during the first part of Lyall’s promotion season. You could waltz into Churchmans at 2.55, have a wazz in the brick horror box (providing you could hold your breath) and be ready for Linighan to lead out the troops. Booo!

I noticed my ST has automatically changed to the next game. Slightly scary but quite nifty.

I’ll reserve judgement until it’s completed but the combination of unfinished entry points to the area outside the stand, security checks too far from turnstiles and the new ticketing system certainly cause long queues and delays and will have impacted food and drink revenue for those businesses in the fan zone as well as the club facilities.

When (as relayed to a Twtd poster) the police are ordering the club to open an additional gate to alleviate queues and potential safety issues for fans being funnelled into one area, I for one am struggling to see that as "a great job"

There are genuine questions to be asked of the organisation (or lack of) on Saturday and I hope the press and supporters club take that seriously (no matter how uncomfortable it is asking)

The club should be transparent about the learnings and make sure there is no repetition. If that means the fanzone is not used until all safety concerns have been dealt with, so be it.

Anything else is to put profit before spectator safety, something that is completely unacceptable no matter how small we think the risk.

Were all turnstiles available/open?

If so, I'm not sure how things get better once the concourse bit is finished. That's cosmetic.

The issue I saw, from above as I went straight in, was that people watched the lunchtime match, all descended at the same time and the number of turnstiles couldnt cope with the volume of people. That's going to be the same every time people hang around until the end of the match on the big screen

When I say 'did a great job' I only mean that having seen tbe building that area was a couple of days before Im amazed that it was in any way capable of being used by the public!

From MA'S repeated, repeated comments about people getting there early for this game he knew it was going to be a wing and a prayer job. I cant possibly imagine him cutting a few corners or pressuring people to do more or allow more than was really sensible - cough, cough! I am tbough confidence that as the work is completed the issues os Saturday will be ironed out.

I was just interested in how finished or unfinished the inside was, given what the place looked like earlier in the week.

I don’t think it’s the least uncomfortable asking questions. It certainly shouldn’t be. What went well, what went badly. What could have been done better. What has been learned, what action is to be taken and by when.

What the police ordered or didn’t order is a matter of speculation, but regardless they have the experience of supporters, staff and actually drone footage, assuming that one flying over the end of the Fanzone was not a Russian one!

It’s the old cliche plan, do, review.

Saturday was never going to be perfect in any way shape or form but the progress from the building site three weeks ago was considerable. That’s where balance comes in. My own experience was fine. I got there a lot earlier than usual and entered the ground itself earlier too, but I guess that’s not always possible for everyone.

If access has not been improved in 10 days time then I’ll pile in.

Am really unhappy with how the club managed this.

It appears that the entry into the Fanzone were limited once the fanzone was at capacity. All good.

But the fans for the West stand effectively had to go through the Fanzone irrespective. So how do you limit capacity for something that is also open to the fans using the West stand?

Previosuly there was a division between Fanzone and stand with ticket checks completed on entry from the road for those going straight to their seats. That was unavailable on Saturday.

Now we get two ticket checks, plus the bag checks.

And people saying the fans didn't arrive on time are talking bobbins.

Fans did everything they were asked to do and the police have to intervene because of the potential dangers they could see developing?

I know I am a bit more triggered than most on the importance of safely organised crowd management - but it really isn't good enough from the club imho.

I'm not having a dig - though if (and it's an if) the club put revenue ahead of safety then that should be throughly investigated by the press and pushed on the supporters club. (By opening the Fanzone without an adequate entry/exit system)

One problem of having a proven bully as a CEO is that people are scared to stand up to him and on issues like this, they need to grow a pair and ensure the questions are asked.

I'll.leave it there and hope the press and supporters club look at this. I don't pretend to know the full details, I do know the importance of getting it right.

I got there early and there was a biggish queue to get into fanzone as people did not realise there was more than one entrance, we went round to the next one and straight in. Stayed in fanzone for a short while then we decided to go in early to go view the new area, see the pitch check out our cup seats for tomorrow and get a drink. Went straight through at the next turnstile.

I'd imagine a combination of people wanting to get in after Hull game, people arriving at their usual times and people being unfamiliar with the entrances and number of new turnstiles caused some of this issue not to mention the fact people were clearly struggling with the tech not being ready at the gat, not realising it had to be pushed etc. Ditto why don't people open their bags for searches take stuff out their pockets and hold it etc?

With what we have spent revenue is vital so getting the fanzone open was the right call in my opinion. It was well publicised by the club entry would be limited after 2 but I guess some didn't see it or ignored it. It's still a bit of a work in progress and obviously not finished hence the issues but the hassle for a few games will make for a much better stadium experience in the long term.

The actual entry via digital tickets wasn't the issue. That was relatively smooth. The issue stemmed from the fact that if you have tickets in the west stand, you now need to join long queues twice. Firstly to enter the fanzone/behind the west stand for the security checks (with not all gates open as the fanzone was full!). Secondly to queue for what appeared to be a limited number of turnstiles once in the stadium grounds/fanzone, to enter your block. The size of the hospitality entrance area is also seemingly disproportionate (a sign of aspiration). However, it doesn't look like any additional turnstiles are going to be added as those numbered on the back of the new west stand extension represent same as the ticket listing. I can only assume some were out of action.

Last season (and as is typical in the other stands) the security checks are located next to the turnstiles (and combine the queuing process). The new layout, which merges the fanzone and rear west stand area, more than doubles the time to get in and will certainly hit their revenues. With the merged fanzone/west stand area I am uncertain as to how they will cut the queues.

Well the police element is speculation, though I’d hope they did intervene if they didn’t like what they were seeing.

Plenty of supporters didn’t arrive on time. My seat neighbour gave it an extra forty minutes. His normal time for running up the stairs to his seat is 2.55. He arrived at 3pm on Saturday an complained about the delay getting in. Yes, he’s right - he should have got in quicker but by the same token I’d argue that given the warnings he was cutting it fine.

Not all supporters did everything they were asked to do. Aside from some tooling up at their usual time aside from that others had no idea what they had on their phone or what to do with it when they reached the gate. With a crowd that size, that is not surprising. Should the club have anticipated that? I think so. I’d also say from what I’ve read and heard their contingency planning and communication on the day was inadequate and must improve.

I’m fully aware of why you are ‘triggered’ on this btw.

Not to be wise after the event but I did wonder why the club were so desperately trying to get the fan zone open among all the chaos. Surely it wouldn't have harmed us to just focus on getting access right and the digital ticketing on this occasion and just not opening the fan zone until Liverpool. Or potentially even tomorrow where numbers are going to be lower.

Just felt a bit unnecessary and a heavier lift that it needed to be.

When presented with the enormous queue across alderman road rec, my group got in the queue and I walked up to the front to scout things out. Spoke to 2 Coppers at the corner of North and West. They said the police had escalated their concerns to the club.

It wouldn't have just been the traders in the fanzone who lost out. The infamous Alderman Rd queue snaked right past the burger van which nobody could use because of the need to stick with the queue.

I think one of the questions is whether the Safety Advisory Group looked at the new/temporary arrangements and what discussions took place. I personally can't see changes of this size being implemented without their approval so presumably the police were aware of what had been proposed.

The advice of the police to open additional gates is as much evidence of the system working as a failure. They identified the potential for an issue to become worse and the correct action was taken to avoid this.

I'm sure the club and SAG will look carefully at what happened and how they can avoid similar problems in the future.

Agree, the good thing about Saturday is that Town fans, stewards and police have a far better relationship than some other clubs. Especially with new entry system and new turn styles. Which means that generally, and I would like to think this is always the case, the vast majority of fans would be confident that the game would be started late should any serious issues getting in arise and no panics and pushing. I might be wrong but really hope not.
