Another step towards the dominance of the big clubs, with four WSL academy sides being allowed to compete against the proper women's teams in the National League, the league Ipswich Women played in until last season. Most clubs in that league opposed it but it goes ahead anyway.

I quite like the idea of b teams in the lower leagues. As long as they had to enter from new at the bottom and meet all the rules of the leagues as they stand. Plus only if they can get two leagues below the main team. We do not produce enough talent in this country as the big clubs hoover up all of the kids then there is no path to the first team. Lower non league teams have reserves in the league system. |  | | |

Agreed. It just means the top teams can hoard more players because they know they can play them in that league. SHould never happen in this country. It happens in some foreign leagues, presumably because they haven't got that many teams at a certain standard. That isn't a problem over here. |  | | |

The article says "Criteria for selecting the four PGAs involved will be developed "over the coming months", with the model set for annual review to monitor its impact". I suppose it will take a little time for them to justify why they pick Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd. No doubt they will later argue this has been so successful that men's U21 sides should be allowed into the National League, and perhaps Leagues One and Two, in future. | | | |

That's right, the highest proper team would be promoted. So if academy sides finished first and second, the third placed team would be promoted. That rather takes the glory away from winning the league though, doesn't it? I guess the academy team would be presented with the trophy. | | | |

Don’t get me wrong. It will never happen. I just think the idea has merit from a developmental point of view. The big clubs hoard the players already but they don’t get decent chances. | | | |
