KM to GON Transition 14:49 - Aug 28 with 2309 viewsbsw72

One of my few concerns around GON replacing KM (I knew GON is a good coach but on the non football side) was whether he would be able to keep the fans onside, how he would present himself and build the relationship with the fans and the press as KM always had a very calm and measured approach.

I know it is early days and the transfer business has been pretty spectacular which has helped, but the way that GON speaks, talks up the club and how important the fans are seems to be landing very well, at least in my opinion . . . .

What you say is true. The main thing that will endear the fans to him will be results. It is the main reason McKenna was loved by so many. He spoke well in the first half of his first full season, but as results had faltered a bit mid-season there were a few fans that were not so sure about him, regardless of how well he spoke, and his approach.

They're different characters, but they're both open, calm and honest, which I think are vital cornerstones for a good, solid relationship with the fans.

All seems very, very good; a great start for GON. Love it.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

I agree.

I was listening to an interview he gave when he had to walk the line between
a) “this is a great club it is an honour to be here” and
b) “I’m a pretty good manager and deserve to be here”

And managed to combine humility and confidence in just the right amounts.

I’m much more impressed than I thought I’d be. The football helps too of course

The key thing for me is that, at this very early stage in his tenure, he seems to know what he's doing. Obvious when I put it like that, I know, but it inspires confidence. He's been there before and has plenty of experience at the sharp end of the PL.

Kieran, who in my eyes is a minor deity and free to marry my daughter if he so wishes, lacked that experience. I know he'd been at Spurs and United, but he hadn't had to be the place where the buck stops; he had Mourinho, Solskjaer etc and had done his learning at a big club with very little fear of relegation. When he did those incredible feats it could be argued that he hit his experience ceiling. He had to learn fast and, as all but the most blue-tinted optimist will admit, didn't always get it right. He was learning elite management on the job, and in the same club he'd joined in L1. None of this is a criticism of KM, far from it, but O'Neil's prior top flight *management* experience is more than Kieran's at this point,m and exactly what we need.

I don't think it is.

The grumbling which accompanied O'Neil's appointment has pretty much entirely dissipated. Most people are generally impressed with what they've seen and heard. On the pitch he's managed to put the revamped team together and get them functioning in time for the start of the season.

That's a very good start, quite a turn-around in many people's opinions. Excellently coped with the tricky task of taking over from a manager as generally beloved as McKenna.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I clearly said it’s early days but that his approach is landing well so far.

If it’s too early for you then no problem at all.

I don't think judgements are being made we are still just walking through 'first impressions' and I don't think they could be much better.

He's a talented coach who speaks well (sounds familiar?). But they are different characters. McKenna's super power was keeping an even and balanced way about him win or.lose as well as his coaching ability. Those tests are to come for GON a d obviously the hope is he has learnt well from.his previous experiences.

Great starts and keep it up. Really impressed with him.

I think a fresh start and new person to make tough calls on who goes out (Hirst, Burns etc) has actually been important potentially.

I disagree.

Last year the discussions in the first few months were all about “give it time, don’t race to judgement”. After we had a poor start. And that was fair enough. And proved to be correct.

So far:
We’ve won one league match, and a cup match with our back-up players. GON has had a few press conferences and shown he can handle those when things are going ok. And we’ve bought a lot of players, creating excitement.

Nothing negative has happened yet.

I’d suggest we will better know what the transition feels like when we’ve got a lot more evidence!

btw, I’m not being negative about GON. I just don’t know!

I wasn’t too impressed with GON coming in, probably partly because I didn’t like that McKenna had gone and partly because I wanted a sexier name to come in. In the short space of time since I’ve completely changed my tune.

I’m now at a point where I feel with the squad we have GON will do a better job than McKenna would have.

The OP is talking less about pure football results than things like presentation and the relationship with fans. In that realm we have seen enough to make judgements about things like how he speaks and changing fan attitudes to the man.

Certainly adversity might affect things - and a manager is defined by his team's results - but the transition so far has been a lot smoother than many (including myself) at first thought.

You have completely misread/misinterpreted the OP’s intent.

”…the way that GON speaks, talks up the club and how important the fans are seems to be landing very well”

Which is undeniably true.

You’re focussed on how things look on the pitch after a couple of months, not on how GON has integrated with the fans. Most will reserve judgement on the football/performances/results for now, but from a relationship perspective the transition from one manager to another certainly seems to have gone well.

Even if results are crap and GON gets the boot by Christmas, he's brought in a hell of a lot of talent and the next manager might get the best out of them. In much the same way that Kieran brought the best out of Cook's signings.

That said, I of course hope that we're well away from the basement by Christmas and GON proves to be a very astute appointment and is leading us on many a European campaign year after year. At the moment I think my 18/1 bet on us finishing top half is looking like a steal.

I'm pretty sure GON agrees with you:

"O’Neil says the team spirit which has been very evident over the last week, despite all the ins and outs, has been heartening.

“It is,” he reflected. But it will be tested. It will be tested. It's sunny, you guys are all here still in T-shirts, we’ve won two games, we won the last few games in pre-season, we’ve just signed a World Cup winner. This is one of the easier chats that we'll have. The Premier League will test us this season, it will provide challenges."

I, personally, love his realism,. combined with confidence that the team will give him everything. The signs are good, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Early days. Nowadays, whether it is copious media training or whether it all comes from within, who knows. Seems a decent guy, high energy levels and almost excitable with it, whereas Kieran was always measured, calm and collected. Different characters .
The test will come, when we have a consistent sticky spell and he feels the pressure that comes with it. Only then can you make a full judgement on his character and and personality and how he conveys himself. So far he is 9 out of 10, he has made an impressive start, but it is all very early days, to repeat myself.
