I agree that United opening day Hull loss is going to make today much harder for Town.
We’re going to hit a backlash, a fired up team of quality and a fired up home support (that can be very good).
We’ve got to sit deep and soak it up, calm it all down. But unlike Hull be breaking on Man U much more regularly and having a press further up the pitch when we can. Our front 3 (Emersonn, Maeda, Enciso) or 4 (+Fatawu) are going to have to work their socks off - and we’ll need Clarke, Egeli and McAteer to do the same if introduced.
As I said in an earlier post our right sided defensive area is where this game will be won or lost. |  |

Looking like Cunha and Rashford will start.
Combined with Fernandez and Mbuemo, that’s really formidable.
And as we all keep saying they’ll be fired up as a team. Hull result has hurt them.
As you say got to avoid an early goal.
Any result to day would be a bloody monumental achievement.

That was the period where I started thinking wete doomed.
Man utd were hopeless. They gifted us 1 goal (if not both) and we barely even had a shot against them with 10 men in the second half.
I remember people seemed to accept it because it was Man Utd, but they weren't very good.
Don't we still hold that (amazing record) that man utd haven't lost at-home in the league when winning at half time since we did it in 1987(ish) [Post edited 30 Aug 10:01]

They can be fired up all they like, but if we can frustrate them - or even score an early goal ourselves - that will quickly turn sour. I get the feeling that fan morale there is quite fragile and might easily be broken, which will in turn affect the ManU players.
The biggest danger in such a scenario is that they have players who, through individual brilliance, can make something happen. Mind you, so do we, on not perhaps quite such an exalted level - Enciso, Nunez, Clarke, Davis, even a McAteer thunderbolt from 20 or 30 yards. |  |

All 3 goals we conceded were absolutely terrible weren’t they? 3 set pieces IIRC. The one against Leicester on Tuesday was poor as well. We’ll need to defend corners so much better than that today. |  | | |

Not sure they’ll ‘turn’ particularly. They’re generally a supportive bunch and Carrick is well liked.

I was not there for the 9-0. I was at Brentford watching Crewe with some chums. When the 9-0 came through, they didn’t have the heart to take the p£ss even. Somehow the pity made it worse. Oh well.
I was at Portman Road for the 6-0 in March 1980. That could have been 10-0 easily. United finished second that season. The 9-0 game? We had a dreadful team that had collapsed. I wasn’t surprised we got a pasting though I didn’t think it’d go that far.
Looking back, GB did well to assemble a reasonable team from the wreckage of that relegation the following season. |  | | |

I wasn't at Old Trafford for the 9-0, and missed the 6-0 win at Portman Rd due to working abroad, but I was there for the 2-7 loss way back in 63/64(?). My memory, if correct was seeing Denis Law score a stunning scissor kick at the North Stand end. Also that it was a night game and i was around 8/9 years old. Anyone else remember that night?
