Might get pelters but Greaves has been a bit at sea at times 18:01 - Aug 30 with 2505 viewsWicklowBlue

In fairness Man U have been easily getting through the middle in the second half pulling everything out of shape.

Is it unpopular

I dont think he or oshea are prem standard tbh

O'Shea certainly isn't a Premier League standard RB. He doesn't have the pace to be.

Both O'Shea and Greaves were like rabbits in the headlights today. Even last week v Sunderland they were caught out on various occasions but lucky for us none of their forwards could finish

1st - Nunez clearly at fault
2nd - VAR arguably at fault for deeming handball accidental
3rd - No-one at fault, Mainoo tore us to pieces. At first I thought Greaves was rash in attempting the tackle and lucky not to be sent off for a professional foul. But it's only a yellow card & pen these days (when inside the box), so prob worth going for it, as Cunha was nailed on to score.
4th - Lukic not directly responsible, but contributed in failing to clear and instead flicking it back into path of Mainoo. But was pin-ball after that and deflections didn't fall kindly.
5th - Scherpen. If, on a greasy, rained-on surface, he's still too slow to intercept through-ball, then he needs to be much more cautious when coming off his line. Poor decision.

Thing is, I know it's a team game, but 3 prem relegations as a defender, maybe it's not those around him...

He grew a lot last year though plus hes captain.

Playing him in his correct position would help.

If that leaves no starting role for Greaves then 2 birds with 1 stone.

He's still relatively young for a CB so it's an area I expect him.to improve in and he needs to.

But this defeat wasn't on him. Very unlucky for the og and our shape was all over the place for the pen.

He’s 25 almost 26 - not that young. His ease on the ball and his decision making needs to improve to be a top class centre half

Unpopular opinion and I own it but Greaves isnt good enough for this level.

I would rephrase it slightly as consistent enough.

He is prone to significant errors of position and judgment under pressure. He is reactive rather than reading the game. And a reason why Kipre kept him out, playing on the wrong side, for most of last season. A real weak link unfortunately.

Possibly not. If O'Neil's reference to two signings is literal I wonder if the second is a left sided CB or a RW to cover Fatawu. Both are really required.

He got dropped for Kipre last season. I like Greaves he’s not a bad player but he’s not a premier league centre half you can hang your hat on every week. I said this before the season started not just based on today’s game where he got unfortunate at times but I would really like us to go out and get an experienced left sided centre back.

He's one of the quickest defenders in the prem (the year we signed him I think he had posted the highest sprint speed in the prem when playing for Burnley). But apart from that he's not quick enough.

We've just played a game and half of fantastic football in the prem and then had some really bad misfortune and we allowed the wheels to.come off. A bit (against a side who can punch).

No idea why we are finding any reason to dig players out. Really annoying.

Of the 41 CBs that started for PL teams this weekend, give or take 30 are older than Greaves. He's comfortably on the younger side for the position.

Having said that, he still needs to get better and he simply has to take steps forward today.

I thought Diop was just as guilty at times today.

Then maybe it's positioning - he's not quite sure where to be in his new position considering the support around him. Angulo led him a merry dance in the first half last week, though I admit things improved in the second half.

I'm not on Frimmer's level. I think he's a Premier League standard CB and we need to utilise him as such. I had concerns about him in that position despite the win last week and nothing has changed my mind now. But I feel a RB is not on our shopping list right now.

Problem is we bought diop so i think gary is happy with him as rb which is a worry. Altho lets be fair rashford didnt hurt us in that first half.

I'm not sure if either O'Shea or Diop can play LCB? If we lose Davis without bringing anyone in we may find out. I assume Furlong will come in at RB with everyone else shuffling across.

Not with end product but they still got through us with relative ease at times, even in the first half when we played well. Appreciate it is to be expected with two recent England internationals on that side.

As I said it’s Luke O’Nien vibes, might get away with 10-15 appearances over a season as a fill in but not 38 starts.

Luke O'Nien is a 31 year-old, 5ft, 7 centre half who cost a few hundred thousand. Jacob Greaves is a 25 year-old, 6ft 3 centre half who cost us £15M.

The two situations are not even remotely the same. There is obvious value to us sticking with Greaves and he has rewarded that faith through pre-season and last weekend.

We have just played Manchester United who have have won 9 of their last 10 games at home for goodness sake.

They scored three past Van Dijk in May at OT, is he also a total liability?

These reactionary takes have to stop. Give the bloke a chance.

I find it difficult to take we've addressed all areas of the pitch apart from diop in defence basically a championship defence and diop,
As said oshea needs to go to CB, if he dosent trust furlong then a RB and another CB, BEFORE 11PM TUESDAY,

It isn't reactionary, it's because we have all seen the same story repeat itself over and over again in 24/25.

If yesterday was a one-off, fair enough. BUT supporters are WORRIED from the performance yesterday that losing breeds losing. Plus Greaves may look good in the Championship but is a liability in the PL and a walking red card. Look at what happened in 24/25.

If Davis, Greaves and O'Shea don't massively improve and be focused on Friday. Isak, Muñoz and Gakpo are going to tear us a new one.

It’s within games as well as between them too. He doesn’t have the positional sense, speed of thought and action that the top attackers he’s up against have. That’s no fault of his own of course. He’s a very good player and does a lot of good things. It’s just that the bar has jumped and now ‘very good’ isn’t always going to be enough and he’ll get found out more.

He does have time to improve. And it’s not all down to him either; as a team we need to improve substantially. We’re getting torn apart when we commit too many forward and there are massive holes in front of the defence. On several occasions, Sunderland and Man U players were able to carry the ball unchallenged for 30 or 40 yards from inside their own half to the edge of our box. The defense back off with no midfield in sight. That’s got to be sorted.
