| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 17:07 - Sep 1 by TractorJack | Says a lot more about our recruitment last season really. Kipre, McAteer and Egeli all decent in spells in the Champ, is about as high praise you could give. At least Egeli has age on his side. |
Issue is signing Premier League quality players in the Championship is pretty much impossible, both from a financial and practical point of view as players don't want to be there. Then you have a huge amount of ground to make up on promotion, hence most teams go straight back down. We've had a good window (assuming we land Flemming) and given ourselves a chance to be competitive. We'll never land every target, but on balance I think we've raised the bar across key areas. Need to keep key players fit, but that's true of just about every side if they want to achieve their objectives.

Palacios is pretty impressive to be fair. Let's not be kids in a sweetshop, it's been an excellent window, much better than last time, and Rome wasn't built in a day.

I was mainly envisaging a case where Greaves is injured. I am not sure O'Shea and Diop can play on the left, and O'Neil seems keen to play them both anyway. He also appears to want to play 3 CBs. [Post edited 1 Sep 17:54]

Didn't I read when Diop signed that he can play either side of the CB pair?

I think what annoys some - it's annoying me anyway - is presenting fans who are concerned about CB depth or asking for one other signing there as though we're calling for Town to bring in Haaland, Alvarez, Messi and Ronaldo. I don't think it's acting like a kid in a sweetshop to be wanting depth in a position where it is obviously lacking.

If we don't get another decent striker in the building then, tbh, I think a lot of the other good work gets undone somewhat as we'll be giving ourselves a massive handicap for the next 4 months at least.

I was responding to Frimmers' pop at Ashton's comment before Palacios came in. No-one's "presenting fans who are concerned about CB depth or asking for one other signing there as though we're calling for Town to bring in Haaland, Alvarez, Messi and Ronaldo." That's a massive exaggeration. I've told you 700 billion times not to exaggerate! You can have an excellent window and still not manage to get everyone you want. I think we've been spoilt, frankly.

Yeah, I'm not looking for a Palacios-style head-turning CB signing. I just want an upgrade on Kipre and a serious rival for Greaves.

If we get Flemming over the line but no one else, it's a window with a huge silver lining but a medium sized cloud. Not being able to sell the number of fringe players required no doubt weakens our position, and Taylor's injury is badly timed for him and us.

I think people forget as well that Greaves was very poor in the prem last time around and couldn’t get in the team ahead of Kipre for much of last season. All summer I’ve expected him to end up a bench option. It seems mental to me that we’re happy to have just him and Kipre for that side given the money we’ve splashed this window. We’ve upgraded on better players than him

Wasn't a pop, was more of a don't moan if people make comments about lack of cover in areas when people come out with quotes like that and make it seem like there's still a raft of signings to come Said it before about his words, they are powerful, he wants them to mean something otherwise he wouldn't come out with them.

I honestly pay almost no attention to anything Ashton says - he is always in salesman mode and therefore exaggerates almost everything. Just judge him on the actions, which are still mostly good, but his words are almost always about getting the fanbase excited.

It's not, his job is to excite the fans, that's part of the game esp around this time. My point was there are people saying surely you didn't expect 25 new players etc. But when the CEO does come out only a week or so ago and say we are not done, we are not done. you can understand why many would think brilliant, those gaps are going to get covered, or closely done.

You're not going to build the perfect squad in one window, particularly having just got promotion. It's just not feasible. There will always be weaker areas until we get the chance to build further. Everyone looks at Sunderland, but they turned up at our place with a couple of League One centre backs. Some people need to stop acting like spoilt children and just get behind whichever players we have at any moment in time. I'm sure everyone at the club has done the VERY BEST they can throughout this window.

BUT there first choice are: Mukiele Alderete They also signed Reinildo last summer as their RB, and signed a few others on loan. So, they addressed it a lot more than us and had injuries. [Post edited 1 Sep 18:37]

I think zero signings at RB is worse, and starting with a CB there. I appreciate Ouattara can play there, but it's not where he has mainly been deployed so far. We've got Dara, Diop, Greaves and Kipre. Furlong can play there in an emergency. 2 dedicated specialists in each spot seems fine to me. You'd maybe want one more to be really comfortable, but the squad spaces are not endless, and we have a lot of CMs (suddenly) and attacking players generally. Less than ideal at fullback, less than comfortable at CB, but surely not gross negligence.

That’s it if true, which isn’t good. Can’t believe we would mess up all the good work we have done in the market by not getting a LCB and a RB. Both positions are glaringly obvious to everyone. Feels like a job half done. To have 3/4 of the defence that took us down 2 years ago is really quite a bad move I think.

| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 16:27 - Sep 1 by Guthrum | What potential targets were there? Who is actually better than the players we already have, or more experienced? Did their clubs want to let them go, or the players themselves want to go to Ipswich? It's all very well having some kid out of Chelsea's youth-hoarding programme, but will they actually be effective in the Prem? Enough to justify the expense? We are no longer in the situation that a Prem loan is guaranteed to be of superior quality to our existing squad. |
I agree. Dara is our captain and we need /some/ continuity from last season, and Diop has been signed as an experienced Prem CB. That being the case, would any Prem CBs want to come to us in order to be a backup option? Especially when we have Greaves who cost us a lot, and is clearly getting game time. So even if there were players who are better, would they come? Would it be a proportionate use of resources to persuade them with our cheque book? Money spent on a reserve CB cannot be spent elsewhere, and with squad number limits and spending rules, it is to a large extent a zero sum game.

Diop cost £8m? At this level, that's the price for a back up. Of course, we probably promised him game time to convince him to move. To be honest, Greaves at this stage is more suited as a back up than starter in the Premier League. There are upgrades out there. Whether we can afford them, and whether they'd join, is another matter.

They aren't acting like spoilt children they are posting on a town forum about their disapointment that we aren't covered in certain positions Was O'neil acting like a spoilt child when he said he wanted a few more. from what i've seen most moans are people saying they had wanted the same 'few more'
