It reminds me of the time we sold Murphy on deadline day and had no decent replacement. Wasn't Leon Best the poor replacement?

Yes...

Leon Best joined Ipswich Town on 30 August 2016 on a one-year contract, as a replacement for the outgoing Daryl Murphy.

He struggled to keep his place in the team, and following his performance on 17 January 2017 in an FA Cup tie against non-league Lincoln City, where Ipswich were beaten 1–0,Mick McCarthy stated that Best would never play for Ipswich Town again. "I told him after the Lincoln game that he is not part of my plans here. He's still with us and may have to have something done with his groin. We will see but he won't be playing for us."

He was released by Ipswich Town at the end of the 2016–17 season. He made just 12 appearances and scored no goals.

Completely understand their feelings.

We were nearly there again ourselves, with Hirsty having gone.

I guess I owe my child an apology! He's had a ST since 2019 and we were arguing about Murphy earlier in the week. I got really cross that he kept saying he didn't remember him and definitely hadn't seen him play.... I kept telling him he had and he was just winding me up! I honestly didn't realise he left so long ago.

Playing devils advocate. Even with Flemming, with the squad they have, the start they have had, they aren't going up this season. So many better squads in the Championship this season, it will be such a tough league. When you are smashed by Scum who were smashed by Millwall and couldn't beat a struggling Stoke side without their best player, you don't appear to have the credentials to have a promotion season.

Bank the money, especially when ZF premium is there as if he had a poor season they are getting much less than £17M up front. They need to pause and build again it seems and this money could help them more than pinning all hopes on ZF.

Murphy went to Newcastle as well but I don't remember him even getting much of a look-in there? Must've helped his retirement fund though. He was magnificent for us in that play-off season under MM. Him and Didzy. That was how to get value out of transfers.

He went to Newcastle and did OK despite not playing much, think he went to Bolton or Forest from there then back to Ireland.

Good player.

I think that's what Burnley fans don't like - that, even with parachute money, they aren't serious about bouncing back.
The sale of Daryl Murphy was quite different. We didn't have much money so getting a juicy fee for a 33 year old whose best days were behind him seemed good business. Obviously the last-minute thing was irritating as we had no time to get a replacement so brought in the hopeless Leon Best, but we were never going to be better than mid table that season.

I get that and they should be pissed off, but as of Sunday they weren't a serious squad/manager for that league anymore so my argument is now as good a time as any to cash in?

The only real difference is if ZF is the difference between relegation and staying in the division. On paper they have had tough games so far and Boro tonight no easier, but i think they were at best pushing the new play-off places not top 6.

Seems they got in the lad from Wolves last minute so they have a striker and the money.

No Best was signing anyway, we sold Murphy last minute without getting a replacement which made everyone think Best was it.

Don't know how many times it's been said before, perhaps you haven't seen other threads, but that fella they signed from Leeds yesterday is a winger, not a striker.

Maybe Best was signed as a cheap back-up striker & then when Murphy was sold 2 days later, he (briefly) became our new No.9.

Yes I know Ryorry but they signed another player very late and I thought it was Hwang from Wolves but it was Hatate from Celtic. No name posted with the announcement video I was and put 2+2 together to make 5. My mistake I do apologise for this.

No worries, I didn’t understand the Wolves link as there’d been no transfers between them and Burnley as far as I could see, so thought you’d mistaken them for Leeds, so I was somewhat off mark as well!

Except it wasn't a juicy fee, was it? We received £3m if i remember correctly, and it basically dismantled our entire team. One of the most damaging sales we ever did, imo.

To be fair to Best, we took him on after a good season end for Rotherham where he helped them survive relegation and played solely as a target man and got a few goals and was always a danger. With his knees he was never going to be mobile enough to replace Murphy and he soon broke down like a 25 year old Nissan Micra.

He also had very little actual interest in football by all accounts and was much more interested in his business activities, including a clothing brand.

Us fans sometimes forget that it isn't necessarily a player's fault that clubs decide they want to pay them. We all have colleagues who show up and don't put it in on a daily basis.

Best played 16 games for Rotherham, scoring 4 goals & helped them avoid relegation. That made him, a free agent, a reasonable candidate to be back up striker in an impoverished Town set-up. He had a history of cruciate ligament injuries so was never likely to be a regular starter.
