Why are there so many "religious" players now? on 13:49 - Sep 13 by WeWereZombies
But of course they wait until they are in front of thirty thousand people before doing so rather than privately mulling over the game at the end of the day...
How do you know what they privately mull over at the end of the day?

No place for religious bigotry on this forum
edit: if you "don't like this post" then you need to give your head a wobble (you know who you are)

I think you earned the downies by suggesting there was religious bigotry in this thread when nobody has gone near that line. It didn't need to be said.

More players from less secular societies. Religion still a bigger part of culture in South/Latin America, southern Europe etc than it is today in UK. Think you'd see the same or more if you watched Spanish. Italian, Brazilian, etc domestic matches.
Yep, a reminder that there are still many places in the world that take their religion seriously, and haven't become a godless Sodom and Gomorrah like the UK has. Even our few remaining Christians are usually pretty apologetic about it.

Well I was still mulling over Scherpen passing out to Wharton at one o'clock this morning, fairly sure that has replayed in Kjell's head a few times...

Giving thanks to God for being there and asking God to grant a good, injury-free game would be best prayed for before the game starts rather than at the end, no ?

Bart too.
Bart (being a Polish Cathoilc) was known to be a big part of the Catholic community in his parish in Ipswich while there and intended moving back there when his career ended.
To answer the question, I think it is most likely largely due to the increased number of foreign especially African and South American players. There is a much higher percentage of Christians in those countries than there now is in the UK. Additionally there are more Muslims playing, particularly those from countries with high percentages of Muslims.
I can recall when Gavin Peacock talking about his faith and setting up Christians in Sport was quite a notable thing.

It doesn't make one iota of difference, having your mind on the job in hand and utilising your skills to the best of your abilities is what counts.
'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that' Bill Shankly

Each to their own. Personal religious beliefs don't really harm anybody (or they shouldn't), but I'd agree with the inference that organised religion and the tribalism around it are dangerous in direct way - wars, persecution etc. - but far more so in giving people irrational excuses to ignore science, the science which has given us all the good and bad changes we have since we left caves.
Ignoring science - either with or without a religious reason - is likely to very soon be the end of us in one way or another. Believing your particular sky pilot will save you because you've read the right book and all the others are false is clearly ridiculous.
If one religion is true, then surely all others are, and yet we've never seen any evidence for any of them. By the same token, they are exactly the right way to manipulate human beings and were therefore always destined to evolve.
logically if religions were scientifically proved there would be no need for faith (which is the bedrock of religious thought), as it would be replaced with knowledge. The lack of scientific proof is one of the attractions of religion as it engages the spirituality side of it.

Singular... only one "downy" (until you likely now add to it), by someone who clearly has the same abhorrent views as the OP.

I do think it's racial bigotry and in no way an overreaction.
Might be helpful to show your workings there, if you are going to accuse the OP.
I’m a libertarian I believe people should be free to practice religion. But people should also be free to criticise religion - we aren’t in the Middle Ages.

I was asking because it's a new thing! I notice stuff and wonder why? Perhaps "nonsense" was the wrong word. Although as a non-believevr I do tend to refer to it as nonsense. I don't thnik I'm intolerant or a bigot, but maybe that's not for me to say? I'm interested.
I also wonder why players all point to the sky - or put their arm up, when taking a free kick. I guess had I asked that instead it wouldn't have caused such a fuss.
I think both are trends and many players do these things becasue they've seen others do it. Like touching the grass, or hopping when going on the pitch.
Does it matter? Of course not, but we can discuss it can't we?
I used to enjoy Wes's little moment of contemplation before kick-off, but that was unique to him. It's nice to see a bit of individuality.

there's not a lot of correlation between faith and ignoring science.
more of a left/right split (which would have seen chemist thatcher turn in her grave!)
if anything the command to love your neighbour should make you more likely to fight against climate change (with the appalling and disproportionate impacts on those with least resources to cope with them)

Gavin Peacock is now the minister of a Baptist church in Kent.
Locally to Ipswich, Alan Comfort is the vicar at Rushmere St. Andrews. He played for QPR, Cambridge, Middlesbrough & Leyton Orient.

I was surprised it attracted the downvotes and think that was a misunderstanding of why you posted it.
It isn't an entirely new thing but it is much more common now.
I think I can recall most of the Brazilian international team doing it a good 20-30 years ago.

if it gives some players reassurance and helps them in the application of their skills to their job and to the moment etc, then that is fine with me. Marginal gains etc. Football was certainly Shankley's religion.

He actually ministers in Canada now. He wrote a book about his career and progression from football through commentary and into the ministry. A very articulate and interesting chap.
