I am in admonishing mood, ha ha. I was explaining the historical nature of it, presumably if done today, it must mean something to somebody , otherwise as you say it is pretty pointless.

| Why are there so many "religious" players now? on 16:50 - Sep 13 by LegendofthePhoenix | If it was as simple as right arm raised = near post etc, then it would be a doddle for the opposition to work it out. There clearly has to be some sort of code used so the players of the attacking team know what the various arm signals at corners and free kicks actually mean, but that the opposition (and fans) don't. |
There is no code. Everyone does it, simply because everyone else does it. Young kids playing football do it now. i asked my teenage grandson why he puts his arm up when he takes a corner and he didn't understand the question. He just thought you had to do it. Watch Declan Rice. He takes every free kick for Arsenal and his arm "signal" is the same every time. As is everyone else's who takes dead-ball kicks. Leif was (is) our corner taker for ages. His arm signal never changes. I agree it probably started as a signal, but now?

I neither follow or practice any religion, but I'm happy to rub along with anyone that does, if it's all done in a respectful and peaceful matter. The great majority of people who practice religion do just that. Sadly it's that tiny minority who let them down.

Well I'm not an elite footballer as you well know. But it seems completely obvious that you need to have a coded message system so that your players know where the dead ball is going, and the opposition don't. I've always thought that the way you would do this is either (i) to have a separate signal (i.e. other hand on your thigh or against your chest, or fingers extended) or (ii) the signal rotates so that 1st time a left arm raised means near post, 2nd time it means far post, 3rd time it means it gets played short etc. (iii) the signals from the set piece taker are a total bluff, and the real signal is given by a different player. Obviously there are lots of variations on the above, but you get the general idea. Surely that is what set piece coaches work on with players? If not I'm available.

Was just a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that for a country with such a Christian history we’ve become a very secular society. To the point where even discussing your religion might be frowned upon. My perspective: I have a religious background and upbringing and feel all the better for it. Unfortunately a few religious people give the rest of us a bad name. There never needed to be a science vs religion battle. I waste too much time arguing with (mostly) American Christians about how there is nothing in the Bible saying the Earth is flat and all space exploration is fake. Anyway. despite my generally pro religious stance I also agree that given religion is also ideology it should be open to challenge, criticism, even scorn and ridicule. Recent legislation introduced about this is a mistake (essentially modern blasphemy law). But I still don’t like smug atheists and the idea that nobody should ever publicly display their faith.

I think smug athiests and smug religious people are as bad as each other, when it comes to topics on here, tbh. I say that as a (hopefully) not smug religious person. I don't like to engage in religious debate on here, because the TWTD community has a subset that tend to sensationalise and bait others when it comes to debates about politics and religion and I don't find it a level playing field on either topic. Superstitions like hopping before crossing the line, touching the grass, tape on fingers, and religious mannerisms, etc, has long been a thing. When I bought Shoot magazine in the nineties, every player interview asked what their pre- match superstition was. And the vast majority of players had one. I say, just let people be who they want to be, if they are not hurting anyone . [Post edited 13 Sep 21:56]

| Why are there so many "religious" players now? on 17:55 - Sep 13 by positivity | bit of a misunderstanding i think, by the "creation story" i mean everything happened word for word as set out in the first 2 books of the torah or the bible. i'd agree that they would state that god created the universe, settled science would have no opinion on that afaik, it starts with the big bang, without making a judgement on how and why the universe happened to be in that state at that time. i'd also agree that the rich and powerful have used and abused religion for their own ends, just as they've used and abused many other belief systems, "animal farm" is a good example of this. better to express our righteous anger at the perpetrators of the status quo rather than insult footballers or scientists who have a sincere and tolerant faith |
But there had to be something before the so-called Big Bang...or did there ?

It takes far more belief to think that the complexity of life and the remarkable coding of DNA came about by chance from non-living molecules which is not at all explained by science.

That is such a facile argument. No one claims that the complexity of life is sheer chance. Evolution is not about sheer chance. And the development of DNA from RNA etc etc is relatively well understood. And no one knows, at present, the origin of life. Though abiogenesis is a serious scientific hypothesis. The idea of "before the big bang" may not even make any sense given that time, in the current instantiation of the universe, appears to start then. We don't know if there is anything before, or whether that question even makes sense.

I recall watching the John Bull Sunday team when they had a throw in parallel with the edge of the opposition's penalty area. "Pattern 47!", yelled the taker. I don't suppose for a moment this caused confusion in the opposition ranks but it certainly amused me - "I've seen you play boys. If you've got 47 different 'patterns' for an attacking throw in well ........ I've seen one of them before".

Interesting variant on Pascal's Wager. But this only works if the community of football works together to provide entertainment for the paying public, no false displays of injury or appeals to the referee for favourable treatment for your side and unfavourable treatment for the oppo, plus never a hint of malice from any player. However, human nature being what it is, we all know that there are some right bastards in this World...and most of them play in defence.

| Why are there so many "religious" players now? on 13:58 - Sep 13 by NthQldITFC | Each to their own. Personal religious beliefs don't really harm anybody (or they shouldn't), but I'd agree with the inference that organised religion and the tribalism around it are dangerous in direct way - wars, persecution etc. - but far more so in giving people irrational excuses to ignore science, the science which has given us all the good and bad changes we have since we left caves. Ignoring science - either with or without a religious reason - is likely to very soon be the end of us in one way or another. Believing your particular sky pilot will save you because you've read the right book and all the others are false is clearly ridiculous. If one religion is true, then surely all others are, and yet we've never seen any evidence for any of them. By the same token, they are exactly the right way to manipulate human beings and were therefore always destined to evolve. |
The usual condescending garbage. Follow the science! It literally changes all the time but follow it!
