I also read The Leopard by Lampedusa, which either was just terrible or (probably more likely) went way over my head. |
I tried 3 x to read 'The Leopard' and 3 x failed to get past the first 10 pages - devious little book, lures you in with its slimness & catchy title, only for you to find that you've fallen into a soft pile of dense, enveloping dust.
I think it was Jeanette Winterson who said "Don't ever feel bad about not finishing a book you find boring. Life is too short, and there are millions of other books out there that you'll love but will never have time to read every single one of if you lived to be 200" (paraphrase). | |

Book that I chose to read: dead heat between The Irish R.M. (repetitive stories) and Code:Damp (author tries to examine the history of the occult in Britain through the prism of Leonard Rossiter’s 1970s sitcoms, Rising Damp and The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. I picked it up, fascinated to see how the author could tie that together. But it became too impenetrable, and by the time I quit on the book, around 100 pages in, it felt like the author was writing to themself.) |  | | |

I find the first 10 pages are often hard as they are introducing characters and setting the scene. You wonder if the story is going to catch fire soon.
Maybe it was a poor translation. I enjoyed it. It occasionally featured the Duke's dog who you realize at the end is a metaphor for the changing times in Sicily from a declining feudal system under a monarchy to brand new republican unified and invigorated Italy. The dog lives in the Duke's castle and when younger is top dog in the village, has his way with the female dogs, digs holes everywhere etc. He ages, gets lazy, is usurped as top dog by the local Republican's dog and finally dies. He is skinned and turned into a rug by the duke, who after a few years also dies. There is no use for the castle under a republican system so the castle is emptied and the dog rug is unceremoniously chucked out of a tower window and lands in the courtyard in a cloud of dust and disintegrates. It was quite poignant really. | | | |

I read nine of the stories in The Irish R.M. and I think five of them involved him taking part in a hunt and being lumbered with a temperamental horse.
Forgot to say that the dullest book I ever finished reading “for pleasure” was Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. If you ever need proof of David Cronenberg’s genius, it was his ability to make an enjoyably daft film out of that book. [Post edited 20 Sep 13:40]
