Something I noticed happening time and time again yesterday 14:24 - Sep 20 with 2139 viewsGlasgowBlue

Was our inability to play out from the back. I noticed this especially in the first half as I was position adjacent to our penalty area.

Walton would attempt to make a 45 degree pass to Diop. Unfortunately, 9 times out of 10 the pass would go 30 degrees, forcing Diop to take a step back, and at times completely face the wrong direction. This was taken advantage by the Everton forwards who pressed very quickly. Diop would either play it back hastily to Walton, who under pressure would then boot it into touch or to an Everton player or Diop would do the same.

We don't have Hladky to pass out. Or Woolfy, Morsy and Clarke who were very comfirable on the ball. We just seem to invite too much pressure on ourselves.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

Our defenders all regularly play the ball behind each other!

Watched the replay this morning. Kept an eye on Walton’s distribution and it was woeful unfortunately. Hopefully something they can work on in the next 3 weeks. Greaves gives a better option in the CD roles for a good pass.
Not sure what we can really do here as not blessed with lots of options.

It was rather nervy and unconvincing. Felt at Palace we mixed it up more and went long at times.

I was shouted down for saying this last night.

It was terrible, look at where the Johnson chance comes from in minute 4!

How we’ve ended up here I do not know and unfortunately people here still seem largely clueless to the importance of a goalkeeper at this level in 2026. Disaster that we’ve recruited 4 (?) goalkeepers in the last few transfer windows, spending circa 50m, and have Walton starting in goal.

Yeah wouldn’t be on the bench for most PL sides. Unfortunately we have the worst goalkeeping situation in the league by a distance if Scherpen isn’t up to it, I fear we are bang in trouble.

That van Oevelen’s distribution looked incredible in pre-season, wonder if we’d have kept him at Ipswich if Palmer had moved on. Not sure if he’s started any games on loan yet and couldn’t comment of the rest of his game but maybe a recall in Jan?

Not that Scherpen's was great last week but Walton's distribution yesterday was utterly dreadful. Long balls were either well overhit and just conceded possession straight to Everton, or chipped up to their backline which gave their CBs an easy job to win the ball.

As you've said he repeatedly passed it to Diop's back foot and he couldn't sort himself out in time. This was often after taking about 10 years on the ball in the first place.

Almost embarrassing how Everton very clearly pressed to force us to funnel the ball back to him and let him return them the ball. Reminded me of the League One days when teams would let Toto Nsiala have the ball as they knew he'd spoon it straight back to them.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Man, I almost felt for Nsiala back then, as it was such a clear tactic from opposing teams to just let him have the ball.

It was also brought into sharp relief compared to Pickford, whose distribution was brilliant. He absolutely pings long balls in to feet. Walton was often floating them to nowhere.

Pickford's passing accuracy was 73%. Walton's 52%.

We haven’t spent £10M on a single keeper so I don’t see how 4 would be anywhere near £50M ?

The Johnson golden chance came within 7 seconds of Walton having the ball at his feet.

Post of the weekend. Highlights the big error in dropping Scherpen. GoN's head not right this week. Poor, poor decision. Go back to Scherpen, build him up, we will need him for the next game. I messed up, Scherps, you're back in.

I’ve been very high on GON so far but I was genuinely amazed and disappointed by the call. Must be really bad in training as well.

There was that controversial post yesterday about Scherpin starting ahead of Walton meaning we would have won. I'm still not sure about that, but I do think we would have got something out of the game if we had Pickford.

Funnily enough, I noticed something else. The number of over hit long punts upfield by CW that more than once bought Jordan Pickford directly into play!

If we can't play out from the back and we can't benefit from long goalkeeper clearances, we might have a problem or two!

I do wonder what games people watch sometimes. Last night there was plenty arguing his distribution was much better and we looked so much more comfortable.

Was an odd one, feels like there more to it.

After the Muric catastrophe you would think we would stick by our keeper for a number of games to boost confidence, Kjell not been that bad overall I thought.

Not really embarrassing, every single team up and down the country do it.

Enciso and Emersonn did it extremely well against Sunderland, preventing Ballard receiving and forcing the ball towards O’nien.

I would predict it was very much a deliberate tactic by us to play the ball to Diop too. Everton are well organised and hard to break down, especially when they’re leading. We could try and give the ball to O’Shea where they’ll just keep their shape and force us back. Or we play to Diop and bait the press, leaving gaps behind to find our attacking players if we can move it quick enough.

Waltons distribution was unfortunately pretty poor though and as you mention, often played it behind Diop making a difficult task even harder.

I think Kjell has been poor kicking usually ends in the stand and some of the goals against he should have done better far from convinced at the moment I guess O'Neil must have felt similar.
