I filmed an advert in Salou. The only thing I remember about the place was a really cool (quite literally) ice bar. Everything inside is made of ice, and they gave you massive thermal coats to wear. Bonkers, but worth a visit if it's still there!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Tarragona and Sitges are worth looking round and not too far from Barcelona on the train.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Get yourself to Tarragona and enjoy the ancient Roman city. The main square has a real buzz at the weekend and Serrallo, the old fishing port is a great place to have a spot of lunch (if you like seafood) and watch the world go by.

I would definitely second the reccomendation for Taragona, if you go at the weekend you may also get a chance to see them building human castles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ which is absolutely incredible to see.

I've lived in Tarragona for 13 years and agree with those above that it's definitely worth a visit. You've timed it well as the Santa Tecla (patron saint of the city) festival is on and there's loads of stuff to see and do. Salou is more of a brits abroad type place where'll you find sky sports, British beer and food in most places but tbh it's a decent time to go as it won't be anywhere near as crowded now the kids are back at school.

Tomorrow's a bank holiday in Tarragona and there will be a castell (human tower) competition in the main square at 12:45 which is well worth a watch. While today there's a big parade from 19:00ish and Djs, live music and other cultural activities all over the city til around 6am! There'll be things worth seeing Thursday too. I'll post the link for the festival programme below. You should be able to translate the page into english at the top of it.

There are frequent buses between Salou and Tarragona that are very reasonably priced and but taxis are very overpriced in comparison and will cost between 30-40 euros.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the place.

The train doesn't stop in Salou anymore unfortunately. The nearest place to get it from is Vilaseca, close to the portaventura theme park. And the trains have been woeful for the past 3 years or so. Constant delays due to lack of investment in the infrastructure.

Would also reckon popping down to Cambrils. It's very close to Salou and it's a lovely coastal town.

If you want to experience authentic Catalonia you can pop up and help me paint my fence.

Failing that my favourite village on the coast there is Altafulla. Retains a bit of charm.
Further afield, 60km south is the Ebro Delta, hundreds of greater flamingos, glossy ibises etc if that's your thing.

That's a shame. Wife and i used to go to Regina Grande hotel regularly in our travelling days. Caught the train down to Tortosa a number of times. That was a lovely old town with narrow streets and a nice river front.

The Priorat wine area is around an hour inland. If you have a car it's a wonderful day out visiting the small winereries & wine tastings. You can also do a trip to the much larger Torres wine estate which is very educational. Montserrat monastery is another amazing day out. Some nice bars in Cambrils. Didn't visit Tarragona, must go back.
