But I've watched a few of these lads before and one or two are more than decent...last night though, whether it was just a one off/ occasion thing, wasn't great - it is what it is, we can discuss the merits of why 21s are in this and if it is a good thing or not. | |

Not saying any of them are ready for the first team at PL level but if you plonked one of them into our team full of better players then they would undoubtedly look better than they did last night. In the same way I thought Matusiwa sort of fell to the level of the collective last night. |  | | |

are they on loan to further their prospects with us or as a shop window to further their careers elsewhere. Seems loan moves of yoofs rarely end in a permanent position at the club. For every Woolf there are a few who once out the door are marginalized and drift off to another club or eventually released. | | | |

Does not seem to me like the academy reboot post-takeover has really gone anywhere yet. Been 5 years now and there's really no-one who has come into the club post-takeover who has managed to establish themselves as a first team player in the football league even, let alone get near our first team squad. |  |

Not sure if anyone else has made the point but Fulham's U21s lost 6-1, Crystal Palace's 4-1 and Aston Villa's 4-1.

Realistically it takes longer than that - the key bit of recruitment we do as an academy is the first one - i.e. the boys you bring in at U9s level so it's a decade really before that work sees fruition
4 of our scholars this year are boys who were not offered scholars at Tottenham.
Recruitment helps us catch up, but at the moment the first goal of recruitment is to close the gap at 18s and 21s level so we get competitive in games which seems to have happened in the main - but when you look at the top academies they seem to have more U16s in the U18s and more U18s in the U21s to push them on. We are a way off that.
Promisingly we managed to get Oliver Wilkinson in, which I presume wasn't his plan when he left Barnsley....plus Zac Wattley is an U16 regular, with Tommy McLoughlin also having played for them - both are local boys.....but the hard part is keeping hold of them now!
In the England U17s squad, these players have had transfers in the last 18 months:
Fejokwu - West Ham to Club Brugge
Jobling - Chelsea to Spurs
Eze - Man City to Man U
Senyah - Coventry to Wolves, then to Spurs
Nduka - Charlton to Arsenal, then to Man City
Watson - Palace to Chelsea
Parker - West Ham to Man City
Motsi - Leicester to Man City
Bernard - Palace to Arsenal
Joseph - Liverpool to Arsenal
And loads more who aren't in the squad.....the gloves are well and truly off in youth recruitment post Brexit |  |

I think there's a case for saying that we are probably loaning too many of our better yoofs out. The U21 are playing far more football these days than in the past yet their loan clubs are often not playing them much - or using them only sparingly as subs. |
I think that if they're going to get a decent number of minutes whilst out on loan then being out on loan and getting experience in men's first team football is always the best place to be.
But arguably if a player is sent out on loan and doesn't get any game time then just maybe they'd of been better off getting game time here because at least this season, compared to previous ones, this season there are more competitive games for the U21s in addition to the PL2 league they also have the EFL Trophy games, the National League Trophy/Cup (whatever that one is called) plus I think that due to their high PL2 league finish last season they also qualified for some Premier International league or cup as well so there are at least plenty of games to play in. |  | | |
