The US wasn't a rogue superpower responding to the whims of a limp-brained cretin during WW2 though.

Limp brained cretin he may be, but he is also the leader of an allied country with a strong military defence in an ever increasingly dangerous world.

Whilst the UK is a country where defence has been cut to feed the burgeoning annual debt interest of 109 Billion, and Welfare bill of 329 Billion.

Ps, income tax is 330billion, which is perfect I suppose as the people who work can pay for the people who don't.

Were there no US military bases in the UK, what reason would anyone have to attack us militarily?

The welfare bill which mostly goes to pensioners, child benefit, the sick/disabled and their carers, those working but with low incomes. Plus the approximately 0.5% which goes on the fit unemployed.

In any case, Trump has not shown himself particularly keen on supporting his allies militarily, what with mutterings about leaving NATO, threatening Greenland, Canada and so on.

I suspect cost - and nominal disengagement from foreign conflicts - in the run up to the Mid Terms may well have played a part.

Has just been discussed on World at One.

Didn't hear expert's name, but he pointed out that

1. The site is 1200 acres, Ie huge, & commensurately massively difficult/ expensive to protect.

2. The bombers cost $300m each to manufacture.

3. And are now very easily targetable by drones.

There may be additional reasons to have moved them of course, but the overt one he gave was the safety of very expensive assets.

Exactly. Expecting any country to be the same after 85 years is stupid. Do we treat the Germans or Russians the same as we did midway through WW2.

The book price might be $300m, but they haven't manufactured new B-1s since the 1980s and there are a quite a lot in long-term storage/retirement. The successor (B-21) to their successor (B-2) is now entering production. Plus the trusty old B-52 is being upgraded again.

I'm not saying they wouldn't miss one if it were damaged, but neither would it be significant problem or real expense.

177 billion on pension welfare vs the 329 billion spent. So yes you are correct with "most" at 55%.

0.5% on the "fit unemployed" correct. It's the classification of "fit" which has had its Overton window stretched in recent years to include feelings, pushing a new demographic into the unfit.

By 'feelings' do you mean mental health conditions, which are also capable of taking people's lives? Quite a lot of that is because of the slashing of mental health provision in the NHS (notably residential care) in the last 40 years.

Even then, it's only 10% of the welfare budget goes on those primarily suffering MH or behavioural problems. Which includes severe illnesses like schizophrenia, early-onset dementia and bipolar disorder (which between them account for over a third of that figure).
