Does anyone on here claim benefits? 12:15 - Oct 7 with 13204 viewsBillywitch

I've never received a single penny of money/or had any help from any government.

And the more I read, the more it seems I'm a minority.

Apparently we’re now pretending you can’t form a reasonable impression of someone based on how they present themselves, carry themselves, their mannerisms and, yes, the circumstances in front of you.

I’m not blind to the world around me. I’m not claiming to know someone’s entire life story from a passing encounter, but please don’t insult my intelligence either.

The race to the moral high ground on here whenever there’s a perceived underdog is painfully predictable. Anyways, I gave the crowd what they wanted… crack on.

You present and carry yourself in a way that is utterly horrible - does that mean you’re simply a scumbag?

You might want to text some back up judging by where you stand compared to twtd thus far on yet another thread.

The vast majority of people who receive benefits are in work. So let's remove that stigma.

Also, I seriously doubt that many people would want to advertise this publicly, so I doubt you'll get anything like a true snapshot.

What's your angle?

Had plenty of truthful replies as you can see.

Why would I need an angle? Don’t be so defensive

It's clearly a leading question from a poster that has recently said they would prefer that only football be discussed on here.

Notice how they haven't given their own thoughts about benefits.

Yet weirdly I have a question that’s deemed for general purpose and a few seem to have got really defensive about it.

Thanks for the reply though.

Imagine coming to that conclusion while visiting an Asda...literally a business that employs people around the clock

I just went to Asda as it happens. After work too.

I had a months worth of jsa 15 years or so back. No idea what its like now but the job center were awful, I'd actually sorted a job by the time I went back for my 2nd appointment but it didnt start for another 2 weeks. Apparently having secured a job wasnt proof that Id done enough job hunting and my job hunter book did not show enough activity (due to having landed said job). I had to argue really hard to get the payment which I needed to cover that month's rent.

There but for the grace of God, job market tough atm. Have a friend who has gone from over 100k a year to unemployed for 12 months and he's suffering

Almost always a tracksuit.

Which means I’m of course a disgrace in the eyes of Townie who would see me and assume I’m off all day every day. Which I suppose goes to show perhaps he ought to not judge a book by its cover. Or better, don’t judge anyone you don’t know.

I tend to wear fairly scruffy tracksuit bottoms, often on the way back from the gym.

And I will even admit that I top it off with the black-out Town shirt with the Ed Sheeran logo despite all the recent controversy.

Fortunately, I've yet to be challenged but I think the black colour helps.

It's the only Town shirt I've ever bought but I liked it because it doesn't obviously look like a football shirt.

Congratulations! 27 years of training finally paid off .

I attempted to sign on a few times in the UK back in the 90,s. Was so difficult/awkward at least 2 of those times and i just gave up and left without receiving any benefit.

Then around 2008/9 the Celtic Tiger died in Ireland and i suddenly found myself without work. I didn't sign on for 7 or 8 months as i had quite a bit of cash saved up. Once the money started running low I thought I'd attempt to sign on in Ireland expecting a similar experience to that I'd had in the UK.

But it was almost the complete opposite, they insisted I should have come in the moment I had stopped working. They roughly said that I had been paying into the system for 8 years and was entitled to unemployment benefit. They spent most of the interview gving out to me for wasting all my savings on living costs rather then claiming what I was entitled too.

The difference in attitude was a real eye opener.

When I signed on in Ireland I'm pretty sure it was often at the local Garda.

So when you see me in Asda on a Friday morning picking up a few bits and pieces, in my trackies and a running t-shirt, with unkempt hair, what reasonable impression are you going to draw? By your last post I think the answer to that is fairly clear.

Sadly it isn't the correct one - the owner of an SME manufacturing company who helped rearrange production schedules and working arrangements so me, my three business partners and the 19 people we employ now work a four day week and have every Friday off. This allows me to go for a nice long run early doors and pick up some lunch and tea on the way home. Once again, see how this works?

Scrounger!

What an odd thread. Although it’s quite entertaining when people show their ignorance and are so out of touch with how the world works.

Respect to you! A 4 day week is an absolute gamechanger.

I work 32 hours a week over 4 days. Earn a bit less than I could but so what? Never ever going back.

I think it's fairly clear what you were trying to do and you succeeded up to point. Not the first time in the last few weeks either. I thought you didn't want non-football posts on here?

You don’t need to buy anything, as I’m not selling it.

Many of the replies on here have been incredibly genuine and those people I’d like to thank them. They’ve answered the question in a mature manner, and not tried climb that all important superior hill.

Some of the aggression shown by others has been an embarrassment.

Regardless, I hope you have a nice evening.

Personally, no. However, I grew up with a single parent in a council house, so I’m sure there was some level of support there when I was growing up.

Having grown up in that environment, I decided fairly early on that I wanted to get my head down, work as hard as I could and provide the best possible life for my family.
That said, what I find increasingly frustrating is that doing exactly that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll live particularly comfortably anymore.

I’m completely supportive of benefits for those who genuinely need them, that’s exactly what the system should be there for. Equally, I think we have too many people who know how to play the system, and the gap between those who work hard and those who hardly work feels narrower than it should be.

There has to be a clear incentive to work, progress and earn more, and I’m not convinced that incentive is as strong as it once was.

There is quite a big incentive in the jobsearch and justifying-your-existence hassle that comes with being on the dole nowadays. Including the constant risk of it being cut off if you don't jump through every hoop just right.

Plus even a 30-hour-per-week job on minimum wage is going to bring in considerably more than you'd get on Universal Credit. Let alone anything close to the UK median salary (£32k).

The issue is generally that people in paid jobs naturally live more expensive lifestyles (e.g. running a decent car, having holidays, entertainment subscriptions), so they still have little spare money - and blame taxation for that, being the thing they get least direct and obvious benefit from.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I have no idea what the OP has seen, but this news doesn't make me want to jump out of bed any quicker in the morning for work.

£1bn of help with energy bills, reportedly paid for by taxpayers, and most of it is going to people on benefits, while working households struggling with their bills get nothing.

As I said in my previous post. If the benefits support is genuine, I am all for it but it seems like taxpayers are getting squeezed more and more to the point of breaking.

Isn’t that as a % ofGDP?

Would be a lot higher if UK state pensions were not so low compared with European Countries.

Brits are more likely to provide for themselves when it comes to Pensions.

Incidentally isn’t Billywitch the Suffolk word for a Common Cockchafer. Seems appropriate.
