Atmosphere against Fulham 16:01 - Oct 14 with 6016 viewsnick141

I don't want to be a Negative Norman, but I did think the atmosphere on saturday was surprisingly bad given the drought of football in the preceding weeks. It felt like we were weren't fussed given that Fulham are a 'small' team. Was just a bit surprised.

More to do with us being pretty lethargic for much of the time? Atmosphere picked up when we upped the energy after their goal and our subs (and Fulham's subs tbf, which were odd).

The PR atmosphere has pretty much always relied on how we are playing to get the crowd going, it really is that way round. Sure, there are moments of Come on Ipswich to gee up the players even when we're not playing well but that's not much of an atmosphere. It's the same at most if not all clubs, especially these days.

No, it is to do with us having sh*t support in the NS now. Let's not dress this up to be anything other than what it is. We need to get the non singers out of the NS 'somehow'.

Poll: If we sing for 90 mins for all remaining games, how many points is it worth?

The NS should not be referred to as the North Stand anymore. That name should be reserved for the OG crew who used to stand there 30+ years ago. Ging from Haverhill, the Bury crew, 'Norfy', 'Juliet' and 'Savage', to name just a few of the characters from back then. Savage would turn in his grave if he went into that stand now.

What's happened is:

a) The stand restructuring nobbled the atmosphere. That was the first part of the problem.

b) When we were sh*t and there were plenty of seats available, supporters (loyal ones, to be fair) took the opportunity to grab the best seats behind the goal. The trouble is, they're not singers.

c) It's cheap to sit in there.

d) If you want to move somewhere you can sing (and I do, because I hate it in there now — it'll never be like it used to be), your only real option is Cobbold A, where you get a crap view and have to pay a lot more for your season ticket for the privilege.

So it can be sorted out, partly through ground improvements, but also by getting the pricing right.

SAF Lower (if that's going to remain the singing stand long-term) needs to be cheap for under-25s. End of. Make it more expensive for everyone else. That'll get people moving.

It'll cause a lot of noise, though, and you'll annoy the loyal lot who moved in when we were crap. But if you want to fix the problem, that's the solution.

Really, though, you want that stand to be a proper Kop-style stand. Look at what Wrexham are doing. Get the roof right for the acoustics, too, and you'll have an absolutely rocking stand.

The other issue you have is anyone wanting to sing, and trying, eventually gives up. It takes a huge amount of effort to do what Max + crew do in Block A. When you start getting people that are happy to put the effort in, and no-one responds, then they will eventually give up, then the ground will be completely silent. Especially when attempts to get the club to help fall on deaf ears.

Madness that we're in the best position we have been in for over 20 years, the place should be rocking really!

Even though we have always had a lot of oldies that just clap or tut a bit, you think there would be a new load of youngsters in there making noise.

Maybe it's just a generational thing.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

It is not a generation thing, we have a bunch of non singer in the 'SAF' and they need to get OUT. Only Ashton can sort this, but he has not got the balls.

Look at the fuss over the cobbold!

As someone that sits in SAR, I cannot hear BA at all. The NSL has definitely become worse since the BA move unfortunately and the overall atmosphere around the ground is pretty poor these days.

Sadly unless we drop down a division and sit there for a few years, it’s unlikely we’re going to be able to accommodate BA back in the NSL.

We only hear them in SAR if the wind direction sends the noise southwards, it was a strong westerly on Saturday. So they were literally Blowin in the wind.

If you sit opposite them in the west stand which i did ironically against Fulham when the ground was half empty once, theyre actually quite noisy in comparison

But then I didnt think there was nowt wrong with the atmos, it was tense which reflected the game, going behind deflated people as the expectati9n is Premier league games you go behind you lose especially with a agame that close.

It could have then gone two ways, down furthrr accepting the inevitable or actually tried to pick up when Town started creating clearer chances

Clubs aren't fussed about atmosphere. They would rather ST fans like us fooked off and there were more seats for casuals and 'tourists' who will also spend more on the day on merch, food, whatever. That's the American vision of 'sports entertainment' (with the emphasis on entertainment and making money).

This is not a criticism of casual and tourist fans, it's not a dick waving contest about who the better fans are. Just the reality of where we have got to, and how the game (passion and atmosphere as we know it) is dying on its arse. Of course, once it's relatively dead does footy even have the same appeal? No, imo, but even if the cash cow's teet dries out the investors have rinsed it and will simply move on.

Ref Ashton's language and attitude to BA. Pretty pathetic and telling. This is the bloke who talks about KPIs ffs, and even then not really making sense of it. And yeh yeh he's doing a decent job by the looks of things, and within the remit of his role, but the corporate bollix is depressing. Tis where we are though.
