I don't want to be a Negative Norman, but I did think the atmosphere on saturday was surprisingly bad given the drought of football in the preceding weeks. It felt like we were weren't fussed given that Fulham are a 'small' team. Was just a bit surprised.

There wasn't a lot really happening in the game so the crowd naturally went a bit quiet, then livened up at the end when more action started happening.

Happens at every game and every ground in the country.

its was lively at the end of the game at carrott rood last night .. "BOOOOOOOOOO"!

I've been in the NS Lower S5 for 14 years now, and the ground atmosphere has always been reactive at PR and we'll never be that fanbase that relentlessly makes noise for 90mins, and that's OK... sometimes it's better when the atmosphere is reactive and gets going, especially like after our first goal, we pushed them on quite considerably to get the 2nd goal. First half Saturday was a bit flat which was reflected in the atmosphere by both fanbases.

One overall issue with atmosphere is that BA decided to move into the Cobbold which is an awful stand to have an ultra section, they should have just stayed in the NS Lower, kept all the singers in one section and it would be louder. By seperating, we now often have two different songs going at once and things don't spread as well. The other issue BA have is that they bang their drum to some random tune no one has ever heard of - atmosphere is not just noise, it's got to be relevant to what's happening on the pitch.

PR sounds the best when songs spread across the NS, that will never be any different. Other stands and fans are welcome to join in btw, it needs to spread to other stands and when it occasionally does (Oh when the Town seems to do that), PR sounds great.

BA didn’t have a choice other than to move though.

Being located right at the front of S6 was obviously not ideal & there wasn’t space to congregate & move to the middle of the NSL.

Not on Saturday they weren’t, couldn’t hear A block a lot in the second half.

SBRU is dead most of the time and can’t hear SBRL from up there.

People everywhere should put a bit more effort in really.

This, just 20 lads in A Block giving it some all game whilst 30k others just sit there tutting.

I think our home atmosphere has been pretty poor for a while now. Last season was bad to the point even KM called it out.

As you say, I look around me where I stand and the overwhelming majority of people are there in silence arms folded. Obviously everyone is entitled to support how they want, they pay their money. I just think its a shame that even in "vocal sections" there isn't that much atmosphere being created

Yup, a massive problem.

If you ain’t going to contribute just move. The view in the SBRL is horrendous.

Great limbs against Sunderland and Fulham but our home atmosphere sounds absolutely awful on TV!

Is the NS alive during the actual 90 minutes? What happened to that stand?

Been pants ever since it was made two tier, no cohesion in the songs together, you will never beat the north stand in the 70s

The North Stand is alive and loud at every home game, just like us in Block A.

TV broadcasters only “mic up” the away fans’ enclosure (“in the interest of balance”). You seldom hear any home fans during a televised match.

Basingstoke, I am a Broadcast audio engineer, and what you are saying is completely wrong! There are effects (FX) microphones all around the pitch to pick up the sound of the ball being kicked, ref's whistle etc, and then there are a pair of microphones high up adjacent to the main cameras on the half way line to pick up the ground atmosphere. If the game is being broadcast in Dolby Atmos (Sky live games usually), there will also be some rear facing microphones in the West stand. It is not practical to "mic up" the other three stands as there is no cable infrastructure back to the TV compound behind the SAR stand. (It is also not a EPL broadcast reuqirement). When watching games at PR on Sky, in both the championship and EPL there is plenty of crowd FX, when the stands are rocking, and yes, you can hear the away fans if they are making a racket.

I was at the Fulham game in SAR upper, and the ground was extremely quiet until we went behind - I didn't understand this either since we had been without football for three weeks. The Fulham fans were very quiet, compared to the other three sets of fans we have seen this season, and the NS and Block A were not as prominent as they usually seem. Don't know why the atmosphere was poorer, maybe someone else has a theory?

I understand why they felt they had to move, that's fair enough, I'm just pointing out that taking singers away from a singing section will result in it becoming quieter.

It was an issue though that BA couldn't be accomodated in SBR Lower and yes, unfortunately, there are people around me that don't sing at all and simply stand cross armed all game. That said, they pay for their ST, their choice I suppose.

I do like what BA try to do but the NS is still the natural main singing section and without anything spreading across the NS, barely any atmosphere will get going.

I can promise you as a NSU ST holder there was almost no noise travelling upstairs Vs Fulham

As someone that sits in SAR, I cannot hear BA at all. The NSL has definitely become worse since the BA move unfortunately and the overall atmosphere around the ground is pretty poor these days.

Sadly unless we drop down a division and sit there for a few years, it’s unlikely we’re going to be able to accommodate BA back in the NSL.

They all got old but refuse to accept it and move to another stand to make room for people that actually want to shout, sing and make an atmosphere.

I think it's just the 80/90s lads are collecting their pensions tbh.

There are games it's been lively with two tiers in the early days. The rest of the ground has always been very quiet outside a few pockets like J block back in the day (talking of lads).

Just a shame the away supporters are stuck in a corner far away from the North stand and Block A.
The best atmosphere in the PL would be created each game, if the 3 was closer together.

For whatever acoustic reason, the sound does not travel well. I am at the North end of the Westa Stand and it rarely sounds alive and loud. Fulham fans were pretty terrible.

Don’t agree, I sit in SAR Upper and if they want to the North Stand does make noise but they just don’t do it.

Certainly an underwhelming atmosphere until near the end.

But I don't think it helps that we don't have the more catchy tunes of recent years.

Seen hundreds of threads like this one. More need to act to improve it.

Get enough singers together in any part of the ground and it would take off. They’re scattered about.

Anyone frustrated with those around them could move to A-Block (or buy match tickets there). Guaranteed to have people to join in with every game for the full 90+. Plenty of non ST seats. Ticket office would sort a ST move outside of the summer window for a tenner.

Hope the club have included a proper section in the ground re-development plans (and won’t use the works as an excuse to phase it out). Plans announced before Christmas with some new investment to help pay for it?

Regardless of what Ashton & co plan to do, it’s got to come from us. It’d make a huge difference if just a hundred of those who want a decent atmosphere (and would actively participate to create one) decided to unite inside one block.

The singing section should be in the middle of the lower north stand, not to one side.

That way both sides of the stand could join in with the singing section.

That would probably require a lot of people moving seats and it just ain’t going to happen.

So as you were tutting away 😂

The other thing of course if people don’t want to sing they won’t.

There is no point sitting in the lower North if you are not going to sing or help to create atmosphere! It was the same 25 years ago and it is still true today.

Corner of J block close to the North used to get some good noise back in the day. More noise than what Block A make now. And the drum doesn’t help at all.

I think there a combination of factors, the stand not being very acoustic is certainly one. Secondly fan base has aged, thirdly the young 'uns don't drink like I used to so are more reserved in their support.

The noise from NS sounds great if you are in the NS but sadly doesn't travel very well. Unless all 4 stands get going (which is very rare) it is not that intimidating. Would love to know what it sounds like from the pitch.

The Chuba moment at the weekend probably tells us the players want more.

Agree, stand in the middle of lower North were I have been for the best part of 55 years and am surrounded by the useless generation on there damn dumb phones.
Still like to get involved but most of my favourite 70/80's songs would get me banned nowadays
Would happily move to one side or the other to let the lads in,suspect I would not be alone

The NS should not be referred to as the North Stand anymore. That name should be reserved for the OG crew who used to stand there 30+ years ago. Ging from Haverhill, the Bury crew, 'Norfy', 'Juliet' and 'Savage', to name just a few of the characters from back then. Savage would turn in his grave if he went into that stand now.

What's happened is:

a) The stand restructuring nobbled the atmosphere. That was the first part of the problem.

b) When we were sh*t and there were plenty of seats available, supporters (loyal ones, to be fair) took the opportunity to grab the best seats behind the goal. The trouble is, they're not singers.

c) It's cheap to sit in there.

d) If you want to move somewhere you can sing (and I do, because I hate it in there now — it'll never be like it used to be), your only real option is Cobbold A, where you get a crap view and have to pay a lot more for your season ticket for the privilege.

So it can be sorted out, partly through ground improvements, but also by getting the pricing right.

SAF Lower (if that's going to remain the singing stand long-term) needs to be cheap for under-25s. End of. Make it more expensive for everyone else. That'll get people moving.

It'll cause a lot of noise, though, and you'll annoy the loyal lot who moved in when we were crap. But if you want to fix the problem, that's the solution.

Really, though, you want that stand to be a proper Kop-style stand. Look at what Wrexham are doing. Get the roof right for the acoustics, too, and you'll have an absolutely rocking stand.

The other issue you have is anyone wanting to sing, and trying, eventually gives up. It takes a huge amount of effort to do what Max + crew do in Block A. When you start getting people that are happy to put the effort in, and no-one responds, then they will eventually give up, then the ground will be completely silent. Especially when attempts to get the club to help fall on deaf ears.

More to do with us being pretty lethargic for much of the time? Atmosphere picked up when we upped the energy after their goal and our subs (and Fulham's subs tbf, which were odd).

The PR atmosphere has pretty much always relied on how we are playing to get the crowd going, it really is that way round. Sure, there are moments of Come on Ipswich to gee up the players even when we're not playing well but that's not much of an atmosphere. It's the same at most if not all clubs, especially these days.
