What's the best pub in London? 18:15 - Oct 14 with 5204 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

I was back in town a few weeks ago and we had a few around New Bond Street and then the next day, Spitalfields after getting back to Liv Street. It appears you can never run out of finding a new/old boozer in the city.

With so MANY to choose all over town, everyone must have a favorite. What's yours?

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

I only went down to The Printer's Devil one lunchtime (used to work in Chancery Lane) but that seemed decent too. And another vote for The Mitre mentioned a couple of times earlier in the thread.

The former has since closed but the Fleet Street/Chancery Lane area was an interesting place to work in the 80s with its mixture of lawyers, journalists and printers. Other places that spring to mind are the Wig and Pen Club and El Vino. And from recollection, certain pubs had relaxed licensing hours to cater for the working hours of the printers.

....largely due to work locations, that I've got good memories of and aren't bog standard boozers:

Old Doctor Butler's Head - Moorgate
Ship & Shovell - Strand
Coal Hole - Strand
Three Tuns - Aldgate
Princess Louise - Holborn

But it's largely impossible to pick one, horses for courses innit.

Three Tuns is my go to when in London.

Can’t believe no-one’s mentioned Browns up the road from Liv St yet in Shoreditch.

TV screens showing the sport if the “entertainment” isn’t up to much.

Just because there is lots of choice, it's not impossible, you just have to give me your favorite pub with a London postcode, I didn't say where!

I was getting nostalgic about the city after my recent weekend.

But ive never settled on a favourite pub in London thats the point :) other than the few i listed which would be my most reliable picks.

Yet like I was down around Greenwich, went to a pub in Deptford, in the good beer guide ,cracking pub only ever been the once though😆 another one in putney just off the high street, might have closed as I cant find it now, not surprised because whilst it was really good, you'd never know it was there.

Used to go on a pub crawl with some other CAMRA branch peeps, all GBG pubs, different bit of London every time, they were all awesome pubs.

Or like Anglesea Arms, went there once before a Town game against Chelsea (its in that sort of area) best pint of Adnams ive had outside of Southwold, it was so good we even contemplated staying as it was back years ago when we were going to get hammered era, we didnt, went to the game, still got hammered. Its changed hands and pub cos a few times since but I just happened to be passing it the other week was actually on way to a different pub in the area, recognised it, called in for old times sake, less busy than it was, felt a bit more upmarket than it had been before but it was still a good pub, decent beer...the pub i was meant to goto, full of pretentious Chelsea types when I got there

Sometimes a favourite pub in London is about the moment or the people you are with thats why imo its hard to pick

Hamilton Hall of course!

Na, fĂșck that, the Crosse Keys is so much better

I've always thought from a Spoon perspective in the 'city' the Sir John Hawkshaw in Cannon Street station is better than the Crosse Keys

It's great, isn't it! I haven't been since I quit London, but I had plenty of "let's have a quick bite with a bottle of cider for lunch," which turned into not going back to work for the rest of the day.

I love it there, though preferred it before they had the restaurant area if I'm honest, but is it a pub? Surely a bar?

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Your post will no doubt pass most people by but I remember passing Browns on the way to evening 11-aside games on astroturf, and people I was with in the car joking about it. Indeed, I think one had even visited it.

From recollection, it was open at lunchtime which always struck as rather bizarre.

I always liked the way the stairs in The Ship in Monument made me feel drunk, even when I hadn't been drinking.

Quite like The Ship in Kennington and the East India Arms in Aldgate

Ah, The Kings Head in Islington - do they still charge you in pounds, shillings and pence ? Saw Sudbury's own Neil Innes performing there.

I’m sure there’s a cash point inside with a modest cover charge and they’ll change your notes to coins at the bar

Ha
. Not been there for years.

But given the current move to not carrying cash so much, it’s what any self-respecting outlet in that line of work would do.

Surely the best pub anywhere is going to be the one you've just left, the one you're about to go to or, if lucky, the one you are currently in.

Favourite is a different matter of course as others have said and I have seen mention of a couple that are on my list (though some years now since I've visited any) such as the Louise in Holborn and the Old Fountain on (near) Old Street.

Back in the day I used to like a visit to the Narrowboat on Wharf Rd/Regent's Canal and the Artillery Arms on Bunhill Row. Compact and bijou, particularly the latter, but fine times.
