Both looked savable but Jesus that second, not good.

Its not irrelavant. Your using down votes as the notion that the OP must be wrong. But its full of people in part who have in the past shown preference to part of of the promotion squads over new players. Lets forget scherpen for a minute. Based on the OP title and subject Which people have downvoted. Pretend walton was in from the start His shot to save ratio is 50%. His opta stats as ive shown have him showing poor returns. His appearence v arsenal not included in the above was bad too. Is walton good enough? For those who down arrowed it. What are you down arrowing. Not just downvotes, but the fact that there are (currently) 42 of them. That's a lot! Which of those good people are voting purely out of nostalgia for the old guard rather than their belief that the OP is a bit OTT and Walton isn't so bad as a Prem keeper? I'm not even asking for evidence now (which I know you don't have), name names! I don't know why all those people are voting but I suspect most of us would have better if we could, but think Walton's doing alright and it's a little harsh to single him out. Especially versus one of the best club teams in the world (much like your "piss poor" comment about Florentino).

He drifted away from Haaland towards the goal, Haaland then takes a big step backwards to increase the space between him and Greaves, making himself an easier target for the crosser. Then has the space to attack the ball and head it with power. Greaves then stuck in no mans land and watches the ball whizz past him. Classic number 9 goal. |
And that is absolutely classic Greaves.
| Walton not good enough on 09:37 - Oct 19 with 920 views | ThatMuhrenCross | I think we have to remember that Walton was signed as a "steady Championship level goalkeeper" who would be too good for League One and give us a good chance of getting up from that league. He's more than served his purpose and owes us nothing. If he wants to stick around and fight for his place, he's earned the right. Moreover, he deserves the opportunities to go to places like the Etihad after what he's given us. But no, he's not a Premier League goalkeeper. I think Scherpen will eventually work his way in as he gets more settled. | |

Not about being perfect though, just better. He's the worst starting goalkeeper in the PL. That doesn't make him a poor keeper but he's an average Championship one. The fact he's back in the team is a testament to O'Neil not being convinced by Scherpen and it looking like we got our recruitment (or decision to send KVO out on loan) in this position wrong in the summer again. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yep. I'm a bit surprised by the level of reaction to the OP, though perhaps it is because it was posted mid game when (understandably) most would prefer to get behind the team, even online. Goalkeeper is clearly a position that we have struggled to get our recruitment right for, I think it is hard to argue against that. It's not about Walton being a bad keeper, as he is clearly decent, but at this level you need better than decent.

Walton is number one for this season barring any injuries. Is this our weakest position, quite possibly. I am sure come the summer the GK department will be overhauled with potentially all of them being moved on in some capacity and a long term keeper will be between the sticks for the next season. I can see us spending big on a goalie for next season, a club record even.
| Walton not good enough on 10:56 - Oct 19 with 795 views | Corpy | We were close to the goal, front left, row 8, right next to the City fans. For both goals, everything happened extremely quickly and nobody around us blamed Walton for either. Any decent contact in the six yard box from a cross is more likely to be a goal than saved I would suggest. That said, a world class keeper may keep one of those out. Walton is dependable but I don’t think he’s world class. Agree with the notion that we’ll look to strengthen in January or the summer. Whether we can truly get a world class keeper remains to be seen. | | | |

Wow, you agree with 1978 that he's the worst keeper in the Prem? Very harsh. We had an amazing transfer window. Yes we'd all like a better keeper if we could get one, but you're veering into a perfect transfer window with that. I doubt anyone thinks Walton is world class, but he's decent enough and we've had a really good start. I just think it's a bit churlish to be singling out players like a few people have with Walton. It's fine to want better, and I'm sure we will get better, but let's not get into moon on a stick territory at the same time!

Surprised by your surprise at Dub's post. Did you think Walton was inside the top 20 while we were in the EFL? He had the 5th best save percentage in the Championship last year in a dominant team, comfortably his best individual season, but Peretz and Rushworth were excellent too, to name but two. Peretz has started as he left off. Johansson has consistently outperformed most Championship keepers since joining the league. I didn't appreciate Walton's greatest admirers placed him even above the top Championship cohort. The three worst performing keepers in our league so far are Roefs, Petrovic and Rushworth, who combine the lowest save percentages with the most statistical blame for conceding more than they should have. But Roefs was excellent last season and Petrovic above average, in the strongest league in the world. Rushworth was regarded by most as the best keeper in the EFL, received the award, carried a £22m+ price tag. It would be very harsh to regard these guys below Walton due to recent form alone IMO. I don't know who jumps out at you as someone with worse pedigree at this level, or with no better pedigree at this level. Unless something's gone wrong, the worst starting keeper in the Prem is in the top 25 starting keepers in the country. That man is a very good goalkeeper, and to me the description is consistent with a rise in stature/reputation for Walton, rather than an insult. Not long ago he was hurriedly replaced by Palmer for £2m, which was very inconsistent with being in the top 25 at that time lol.

To be honest I haven't studied the other keepers in the Prem, but I'm not sure those calling him the worst have either. Like you say, he's not the worst performing one so far, so I feel like it's just a bit off to describe him as the worst at the moment. I thought he was one of the best in the Champ, but not sure how relevant that is right now anyway. Players improve, keepers ceratinly get better with age, and maybe he's benefitting from better coaching and coaching tech? Who knows, I just thought the OP and some of the comments have been a bit harsh.

| Walton not good enough on 14:52 - Oct 19 with 573 views | DJR | I have no issue with Walton, and no axe to grind against Scherpen. I am also not one who particularly likes to rely on stats, especially with so few games played, but this has Walton 17th. and Scherrpen 22nd in terms of the best keepers in the division. https://www.statmuse.com/fc/as 17tth doesn't seem especially bad to me especially given the small margins involved. When it comes to Scherpen, and assuming he was intended to be first choice, maybe it was unrealistic to expect a 26 year old who hadn't played much in really decent leagues to find his feet quickly. Nevertheless, his chance may still come again. [Post edited 19 Oct 15:15]

Tbh I was mainly agreeing with the general thrust of that comment, rather than the specific point about him being 'the worst' keeper in the league. I think we really ought to have a better keeper. That being said, he has performed better than Scherpen and deserves our support, but I don't think a discussion on here is unjustified.

yeah a discussion is fine, I just took issue with some of the extreme wording, such as "Both looked savable but Jesus that second, not good" in the OP, and worst in the league, not a Prem keeper etc. I think the goals on Saturday are much more difficult to save than people realise.

Impossible to answer because if he were at another club there would be a whole load of different variables attached. He's not statisically the worst keeper in the league right now, so you could argue 'any of the clubs where he's statisically above that club's keeper'. But it's a daft question, and not my point anyway. I'd obviously like a better keeper, but I thought your OP and some of the comments were harsh given the excellent start we've had. Wanting even more from an already impressive transfer window seems harsh, on the recuitment team, too. I also didn't like the way you and Frimmers were saying everyone who disagrees is doing so out of nostalgia for the old guard. It's belittling people for having a different opinion. Personally I couldn't care less how long a player's been here. I love Palacios already. Nothing wrong with liking the idea of a better keeper in the future. Just thought the language about it a bit harsh, and the goals on Saturday weren't as easy to save as you and a couple of others were making out.

belittling people for having a different opinion Jeez flash pot kettle mate. You named dropped me in the thread because you didnt like Joeys opinion. Wasnt any need to bring me into your reply to him. Final thing ill say is your final point about goals not being easy to save as made out.. Somehow most the goals walton concedes are unlucky difficult shots to save yet those scherpen conceded appeared to be mistakes by the keeper. Thats why i feel the nostalgic thought. If walton was signed in the summer replacing scherpen would scherpen be receiving the benefit of the doubt and walton seen as making mistakes...

Eh? This isn't a post talking about the entire transfer window, I've made plenty of those, including posts about a lot of the new recruits as individuals, even on the same day as this one. I think it's perfectly fine to question the position, especially after last time and lack of stability in that department for a while now. Your post basically translates to "Only positive posts allowed at the moment don't discuss any areas concerned about". In fact, someone started a thread saying exactly the same thing, which is where this forum struggles sometimes with a few on here. If you have mistaken my concern in the GK area to suddenly mean I am not delighted with the start we have made, then you're obviously ignoring all of my other posts, so I can't really help you on that. I'll standby I think he should have done better, if you think the language was too harsh, sorry for offending you on that, I guess we will have put it down to be at HT and being frustrated but I think you're going overboard. Don't worry moving forward, I rarely post doing games, I am usually at the pub but wasn't on Saturday.

You've been backing Joey throughout this thread, and not making a lot of logical sense, so perfectly reasonable to namedrop you. You've also said things I've said about Walton that I haven't said - I've asked you 3 times now for the proof and you've just ignored it. You're bemoaning not getting a better keeper in, so how can I view it as anything other than a slight on the transfer window? I've said it's fine to question the position. I wasn't offended by anything. And I haven't said you can only do positive posts. There's so many straw men in this post it's a fire hazard.
