Ipswich losing out on city of culture 08:44 - Oct 22 with 8865 viewsMullet

Given the club are now in the Prem (for however long that might be) how do you locals feel about missing out? It’s a great way to boost the coffers and local economy and seems a bitter blow for the town and Suffolk generally.

Ashton being praised and then blamed here doesn’t reflect well either does it?

People used to say that about Colchester when I lived there and I never had any issues, I think most towns have a 'reputation' which is largely unfounded for the most part.

Colchester used to have a bad reputation as it is a Garrison Town.

I remember as a kid the pubs the soldiers would use,and if you wanted a punch up you would go in them.

Heaven help you if the Military Police got hold of you before the Town Rozzers!

Then there were the ‘Squady Bashers’ for the girls who liked a man in uniform ..

Same link as I posted earlier.

I wonder if Benters will also give you a down arrow for posting it.

That pretty much aligns with what I was told although tbh I never had any issues.

I really don't want Ipswich to be known as a City though, it's a town!

I did but not through fighting but being on MOD land.

I agree Ipswich is a Town as is Colcheter, the sign as you entered the Town used to say ‘Britains oldest recorded Town’.

Yes since the Colchester sign is bordering on Suffolk territory from Sudbury way despite the fact it's several miles from Colchester!

Is Norwich a Unitary Authority or a Two Tier system like in Ipswich

A lot of Ipswich problems stem from having Suffolk County Council and satelite councils like Babergh and East Suffolk screwing it over

Norfolk is two-tier, the same as Suffolk and each have different responsibilities

Politics seems to have been friendlier to Norwich, things seemed to be better geared towards Norwich succeeding, it's more of a regional centre than Ipswich.

Perhaps Geography is friendlier to it was well, it's central to Norfolk's economy.

Having the UEA and regional media there must help, they have managed to get most of their Northern relief road being built, we are probably another 10 - 15 years away from getting our bypass built

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Very poor journalism to go for engagement then give the context at the bottom in scant detail. New offences are a huge factor alongside population growth.

As someone who teaches about crime statistics it’s very frustrating how the media misuse them as often as possible.

But it does illustrate the perception vs reality debate from a few days ago in the thread nicely.

I like Ipswich.co.uk as a website, they probably provide better news coverage of Ipswich than either the Star or EADT, but matey got a proper bee in his bonnet about Ipswich BC choosing those two as partners for the City of Culture bid. Ever since then his coverage has been very critical of the bid process (though not the bid itself) and tbh his coverage of the failure seemed a bit too keen to stick the boot in on people that excluded him.

I don't know the circumstances of him getting the details of the failure, but press releases being embargoed until a certain time, and the media respecting that, is very much the norm.

It is, but if he genuinely didn't know there was a release coming then he can do whatever he wants with the info he has. That's real journalism and local media is desperately crying out for it.

Totally agree on Ipswich.co.uk though, if this farce helps with anything then hopefully it's to gain them a little more support as their output is much better, more focused and rigorous than the traditional media locally are capable of providing nowadays.

"their output is much better, more focused and rigorous than the traditional media locally are capable of providing nowadays."

Very much agree with this - I made the press release point above, but local media has basically just become a publishing service for press releases. Whilst there is an etiquette (that I won't pretend to know better than you!), there does also need to be some rigour applied at the same time.

Just think on this occasion his very evident annoyance at IBC probably made him a bit too keen to get the first kicks in!
