I've been quiet today, power back on about half an hour ago after a fifteen hours or so outage. I think I did OK, had a pee by the light of a mobile phone screen at four thirty (why didn't I just sit down ? Because I'm a bloke that's why.) Two cups of coffee on a gas cannister ring and by then the Rayburn was on the go keeping me warm plus a third cup on the hotplate as well as lunch of pork belly slice with rice and carrot with a sprinkling of sumac powder although the rice was not the softest it has to be said. Mobile battery got down to 4% so caught the time to set up a battery powered alarm clock and then switched it off (it's back on and charging now.) Candles at the ready but looks like I won't need them, so not really a difficult day and I've read a bit more of my current book on the go ('Bothy' by Kat Hill) than expected.

That's why I keep some dry/longlife foods, water, wind-up radio/torch, solar light, spare clothes & camping gear in my car! (parked about 5m away from house).

Some of us boomers and countryside dwellers whose infancy was during rationing; and childhood when there were few phones (landlines of course) have long been of a prep mindset, in the sense of keeping contacts stored in hard copy like a physical address book; a small amount of £cash/notes, & 3 weeks worth of food in freezers & cupboards,

I have always kept at least 7 days of food, being old enough to remember big freezes and shops running low on supplies. But I have now brought in bottled water for 3 days' drinking supply and have filled a 10ltr camping jerry can for washing etc, in the possible event of cyber attack on the water supply.
Losing both electricity & gas would be a pain, but I'd get by for a few days.

I always imagined you had a wood burning stove out there in the sticks.

The ones with flat tops allow an old-fashioned kettle or pan to be used for hot drinks and basic cooking, very handy.

There’s a whole range of solar hanging or handheld lightbulbs available these days too, not just for emergencies but also useful for dark corners or cupboards.

My old man used to do the exact same out the front of his every couple of years to prevent both his front garden and the road from being flooded.

Got a right rollocking off a highways agency bloke one year while doing it, and then proceeded to give him the benefit of his lived wisdom back and was eventually 'let off'

Unbelievable Geoff - good to hear your old man gave that HA jobsworth prat some choice words back!

I remember when i was a kid in the early 1950's, and my grandad had a sign in his garden, saying "You may telephone from here". He was one of the few people in the village of Kedington to have a phone.
