The Championship is only better if you're winning more often that not, which by definition will mean you are competing for promotion. People forget that this club spent 17 seasons in the Championship and people enjoyed it so much they stopped coming to games en masse and PR was half-empty.

Been my argument for ages. I hope never have to see us play another Championship match in what's left of my lifetime. And I'll happily take a few tonkings along the way with it.

I agree I was almost hoping we'd miss out and get the playoffs and stay down at the end last season (although raw instinct and emotion got the better of me by the last eight games obvs!). Basically what needs to happen is those corporate brands - who've already got their 'Super League' by any other name leaving us twiddling our thumbs most midweeks - disappear to play these other corporate monoliths and let the rest of us get on with proper football against other clubs who still have a proper link to their communities.

It's so patronising being told we should be so excited about playing in the Premiersh*t when we all know it's absolutely rubbish compared to what football used to be - one of the reasons why they're so keen to make 92-93 'year zero'. I even had a Man Utd "fan" the other week trying to tell me "the big clubs have always dominated" - which is total nonsense unless you believe this cr*p peddled by the BBC that football pre 90s never existed.

It's more competitive across the board, it certainly isn't better.

I had this argument on here with some throughout our last PL campaign when people were desperate to drop back down, absolute madness.

You want to be in the Premier League, it is the biggest and best league in the world, it attracts the best players, and is the highest standard around the world, on what planet would you not want to be at that table.

The aim is to build your way towards Brighton and Bournemouth, have seen some incredible football and footballers come through their clubs, and are now really able to sustain PL status, challenge for European tours and compete in domestic cups, you aren't doing that in the Championship.

The Championship is a dog fight, it was horrible last time around, and it is so tough to get out of, and very easy to become just one of the pack. Avoid at all costs!

Yes but Brighton and Bournemouth are still seen as lesser smaller clubs than we all know who.

But both play decent football at times.

Regarding going to games,I remember both getting tickets for people and buying tickets off people to watch the games. What happened to rolling up to the Hamilton Hall and being able to buy a spare ticket off of someone?

Now it’s all a bit serious and strict.

Ah, but Bournemouth are very plucky!

Yes it is a bit restrictive now. Symptom of a changing world where everything seems harder to do - or that’s maybe a sign of ageing on my part.

As to the OP, whether the championship is better depends on what you are looking for. There are plenty of people that think the National Leagues are better. Maybe the Championship is more fun. But only if you are trampling over the rest every week and thumping the neighbours.

Personally I want us to be the best we can be. I want us to have a stadium that can accommodate the supporters of tomorrow and see the best there is. That means the Premier League. We will of course never be one of the big clubs, but neither are we plucky little Bournemouth, or Brentford come to that.

When I look at the Forests, Brightons of this world, that’s the current target. Be better than them.

The Championship, like L1 and 2 is more competitive with lots of games and chaos. But the standard of the Championship is miles below the PL. I think if we can establish ourselves in this division, we will view it differently. Last time it felt like we were visitors who were then booted out with a quarter of sherbet lemons. This time? It feels different and we have a chance.

So for me it’s not about which is ‘better’ but as in real life everything about being the best you can be.

The standard of the Premier League is NOT better than the Championship. It's mainly faster, but you get some very decent football played in the second tier now - completely different to 30 or even 20 odd years ago when it really was meeting some long ball sloggers. Plenty of games last season (Cov, South, Midds) where the football was miles better than many of our matches in the Premier League the previous season - and even when we did see some genuinely amazing football it was basically not a contest as Man City destroy us 6-0.

I'm fed up of this Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton argument. For all their brilliance at carving out a niche in modern football, they have won precisely nothing and not even got into the golden Champions League circle once (which is a misnomer anyway given Spurs have won the title less recently than we have!!). Basically they are allowed to win the odd battle, but never the war.

No-one at our level is allowed to build a team gradually like Robson did in the 70s as as soon as anyone decent comes through they're poached by one of the showbiz clubs. So each season it's live hand to mouth hoping this isn't the one where you slip back Wolves-style. Meanwhile the completely insulting thing is that FFP genuinely rigs it for a handful of clubs - so Spurs and Man U can keep spending ridiculously (at least enough to keep them up) whilst Villa who were genuinely looking like a challenger have to sell all their team and Newcastle aren't allowed to invest to the level they could properly challenge.

Final stat - by next season it will be 50 years with just one club becoming a 'new' Champion of England. Compare that to the 23 clubs in the 90 previous years and it shows what a closed shop it has become.

I beg to differ having gone to so much dross two years ago, and I'm not convinced it's much better. The main difference is it's us playing the low block most of the time in this league, but the games often stink.

The problem is that most of the dross was played by the bottom four or five teams two years ago. Two of the five were better than the other three. Even Wolves at Portman Rd swatted us aside like the weedy kid in the playground, as did West Ham.

I watched Charlton Norwich last Saturday and bits of other games and the standard of play and players is a mile short of the Premier League. The game stank just as the Watford Charlton game did a week earlier.

The chasm is precisely why we’ve brought in players at such a cost. It wasn’t Harry Enfield doing ‘loads a money’ for the fun of it. It had to be done to at least try to bridge some of it.

If I compare now to 2000/01 Charlton competed comfortably and so did we. Even Man City who were the poorest of the sides (I know they’d finished second but we were better than them) nearly managed to stay up. That is hard to do now. Last season was an exception. Sunderland performed a miracle and Leeds already had the basis of a Prem side and the infrastructure to support it.

Of another poster’s comments, of course it’s not fair that you cannot build teams as Robson and Clough once did. Of course you will lose your best young players and the league is skewed financially to the Sky Six. We all knew in 1992 that the creation of the PL was all about greed and not about the game.

However, it is what it is, including silly fireworks, painful song and cardboard arch. The Premier is a miles better standard of football than the Championship though. It isn’t as entertaining or as competitive or for what I’d call ‘real’ supporters like the fella that does the Fleetwood podcasts.

Man City, Chelsea and co are not interested in the type of people that used to follow them. They want corporate packages, tourists from around the world you name it.

But until those clubs p£ss off and form their own little league with Athletico Pathetico etc, it is what it is. The best standard of domestic football we have. I’d rather we played in that than not.

I want ITFC to develop, grow and compete better than it can at the moment. It’s far better than scraping a hoof of a win against Leicester on a bog of a pitch in front of 17k people in 2012 with no hope of anything much.

The championship is better for one reason only - there are more games and it feels like football is always on.

Outside of that, it's an awful league full of nonsense teams and people only really enjoy it if your team is winning. Screw playing teams like QPR and Preston, combined with awful officiating.

I'd much rather be in the top league than having to deal with a lot of the poor teams that are below it.

I watched two of the Premiers finest the other night,Liverpool and Chelsea,I know it was the Carabao Cup but jeez it was boring! I turned it off after about 20 mins.

Yet people are saying Norwich v Charlton was boring and I enjoyed that!

Funny innit.

Funnily enough I was at Charlton v Norwich on Saturday too. And I think you're spot on that that is the heart of the issue - even if the football wasn't full of skill (and it wasn't empty of it either in spells) it was an exciting match and swung back and forth (albeit with a very disappointing result after McLean came on and took charge for the budgies in the 2nd half).

Isn't that why we go to football? If I just wanted to watch skill I might as well just go and watch exhibition matches. I want to watch something competitive and the Championship you NEVER know what the result is going to be before you arrive. I didn't even bother wasting £30 + £150 train + sundry expenses to go to Manchester to watch a foregone conclusion the other week. Why would you?

Sadly if we stay up I'm going to be giving up my season ticket after 25 years as I can't be doing with the club behaving more and more like a soulless corporate entity (removing child discounts for some, threatening season ticket holders with expulsion if they don't attend games) - I'll go to Charlton instead for precisely the reasons discussed here. And unfortunately when we inevitably tumble down the leagues again at some point I won't be back. I wonder if all these glory hunters who've emerged from the woodwork over the last 2-3 years will replace me?

I just wonder is there a possibility that one day the PL folds. Or becomes less significant in the future.
What is the PL held up by? Well it's a good business, but the owners comes from abroad. The players mostly comes from abroad. The coaches mostly come abroad.
And now, especially with the elite clubs, the fans are increasingly coming from abroad.
We've got a great history and culture of football which will always keep us going, but what if the owners take their money elsewhere. It's all very well patting ourselves on the back because we're in the best league in the world, but if owners who have no attachment to this country decide to invest elsewhere.... it might fold like a pack of cards. And the players go elsewhere.
Italy in the 90s was the league to be in .... and now it's nowhere as strong.
It's all very well sneering at the quality of the Championship, but it's still considered the 6th or 7th best league in the world.

Got to say, while I'm chuffed that we're in the top league I do not enjoy living in fear of losing and the implications of relegation the whole time! I admit that I do prefer to be in a league where i think we stand a decent chance to win most games.

Mind you, if we settle and establish ourselves in the top tier i'm sure I'll change my mind!

I don't watch Norwich for entertainment. I just want them to lose.

I'm bored with this Man U thing already. That's after the Man C drama.

Championship is better. More competition. More real football.

The PL has always been very competitive. While it's near impossible to dislodge the big boys from the top, the lower teams are still capable of getting a win against anyone and that's partly why the PL sells so well overseas, helped by the fact the football is quicker than most European leagues. Being uncompetitive in the PL - as we largely were 2 years ago - isn't much fun but it looks a very competitive league this season, with no real no-hopers. And there were some dreadful games in the Championship, especially against the "low block" teams. Playing the likes of Southampton, Coventry & Boro last season was a different matter though.
