Holland/O'Neil/Ashton 09:05 - Oct 25 with 1356 viewsNthQldITFC

The interview is now available on YouTube if you've not got TownTV.

Really good, as ever, but what stood out to me was the message about how important the fans are to the team:

GO: "I don't think we win the Sunderland game without them... and definitely Fulham... I'm not sure me and the players find a way to get over the line without them... they are that big for us"

So keep it going boys and girls, keep giving everything you've got from the stands.

(And I'd appreciate this staying an entirely positive thread as well, if possible. It does help us all.)

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

It’s an interesting interview, particularly how O’Neil comes across. He’s very analytical and seems happy with where he is. Seems quite a likeable person.

It’s a great interview. As much as anything it made me very grateful that we have Mark Ashton even though there are reasons to be irritated by him or even dislike him. Ashton brought us KMcK and has replaced him with GON who, at the moment, seems to be a great replacement. MA, love him or hate him, is the consistency in club direction that drew GON and possibly great players present and future to Town.

Which makes Ashton's refusal to work with BA all the more baffling.

Not a prophet, or a stone-age man; just a mortal with potential of a superman.

Ashton is a wheeler dealer, football industry man. He's probably what we needed after years of not having anyone with industry savvy at the top, but he's also a chancer and as we saw with the Farage fiasco, not always possessing good judgement or humility. He's egotistic and he answers to the Americans - he'll put that and his bonuses above anything else.

He's done a fine job of getting us shipshape and he's made two very astute appointments. But ultimately it's KM who we should thank the most. Ashton correctly put his faith in him but it was KM who did the hard yards of turning the ship around.

I think the most revealing part of their dynamic was Ashton saying that KM often said no to players offered, preferring not to add players if he wasn't absolutely sure. There was a very tiny but perceptible bit of frustration/resentment in that I felt, miniscule but there. I think KM probably helped to keep Ashton in check a bit. I think KM would have managed Ashton as much as Ashton managed him. Whilst still being appreciative. I would be fascinated to hear KM's private thoughts. He's too diplomatic to ever divulge them though I suspect.

Ashton and Werhun are the self satisfied football men of modern day football. It was KM who was the magic.

The OP asked for this thread to be positive. I think we all understand what this means: not turning it into an Ashton hate/bashing thread that I’ve no doubt many will be itching to do. And will probably succeed.

MA is part of the club structure. He doesn’t own it but answers to those that do. Nothing wrong in that. So to the positives. He arrived just after they did when the club was on its knees in every way. It was dying. Saviour Marcus had sweated it into the ground. The new owners saw the potential. But the new owners needed somebody to drive it.

Enter Ashton. The only tangible evidence is where the club is now compared to five years ago. Some would prefer it to how it was. I’m not one of them. Whether you like or loathe Ashton clearly unlike some on here, I’ve never met him, don’t know him don’t wish to. I don’t care what his politics are, whether he carries the satanic bible or eats Beelzebub’s tofu. Not interested.

He is not the club. You all are. What he is is a key component in driving this club forward in just about every way over the last five years. No, we should not thank KM the most. We should thank the owners. At the top of the pile, they take the plaudits. No them, no anybody.

Ashton deserves credit for the good things in addition to accountability for his mistakes. Credit includes recruiting KM though I suspect others were involved with that. KM deserves credit for welding Cooks decent signings (about 50%) into the core of the best team I saw since GBs time.

Assigning credit to KM for keeping Ashton in check a bit is supposition. There’s no evidence of that and neither fits with how the club is structured or the personalities. I suspect it’s Ashtons bosses that do that - again speculation. Nobody knows

As for self satisfied, I don’t necessarily agree. Driven people like that are rarely satisfied by anything in my experience. But again, I don’t care. Has the owners, the senior leadership, managers and players done a good job most of the time? Yes. Have they made mistakes? Yes, loads but the cliche those who never made mistakes never did anything holds true. That applies to them all.

This football club is on a different planet now, thanks to the hard work of an awful lot of people. As long as it is stable and progresses in all areas, I’ll be more than happy.

Lots of guesswork and seeing what you want to see just to have another dig.

Pathetic to be honest.

Yep. This is my view.

There is a permanent black mark against Ashton, but the job he has done in transforming our club is huge. He is full of bull and brentisms, but tbh I think that him being in permanent salesman mode is part of the job he has needed to do for us.

GON increasingly feels like exactly the right appointment to have followed McKenna - there are a lot of similarities between them, and even the football on the pitch is very much evolution not revolution.

It was a good watch but nothing i didnt really expect to hear tbh, the fans questions where obviously filtered to only include the banal uncomplicated blandly answerable ones.... nothing really of any new interest emerging... but im probably vexed because my questions about better Town/Greater Anglia cooperation never come up.
I do think the Club is in good hands though.
Dont see us ever difting Evans style under this ownership.

With them including fan questions, do you reckon this then ticks the box for having held a 'fan forum' this season?

We only know 1 side of those discussions tho.

Didnt BA once take a banner that altho was aimed at the FA i think, it could have put town in a spot of bother. Afterall if you pss the FA off id imagine theyd be on the blower to ashton to get his club inline.

Tbh there would be no love for KM without the role of Ashton
Whilst there are thoughts about the whole chairman/ceo role. The farage stuff and for some the way he talks.. BUT he lets the manager manage. KM wouldnt have beem successful without those above him keeping out the way and concentrating on providing KM the tools. Im not just talkint about signings. But the pitch works. Stadiun. Training pitches. Better gym etc etc. Projects overseen by Ashton and his teams.

Plus didn't MA accomodate BA moving to Block A as they couldn't get a group of seats together in the North Lower? Seems pretty helpful.

As you say, we've only heard one side of the story regards that relationship, and BA aren't the spokesperson group for all singers in PR, only those in Block A.

BA aren't the only section that make noise in the ground, the North Lower has always been and still is the main singing section.
