| Israel general election today 07:31 - Oct 27 with 7100 views | GlasgowBlue | Hoping Netanyahu gets beaten soundly. Too close to call in the polls. Record numbers of Israelis flying home to vote. The Israeli Arab voters could swing it against Netanyahu. https://www.thejc.com/news/isr If it’s a deadlock then he stays in power and out if jail just a little bit longer. | |

I'll bear that in mind for the future! And I suppose it brings to mind the time when I got a downvote for saying (as a joke) that Maeda's grey hair made me concerned he was prematurely ageing. [Post edited 28 Oct 21:48]

| Israel general election today on 19:51 - Oct 28 by Clapham_Junction | It's not a term of endearment. It's how he's widely known in Israel regardless of people's views of him. |
it is originally a term of endearment, it may have been adopted by the populace but that does not change the fact that the roots of the name comes from his family. Using it kind of humanizes a monster. If it is used by his population then it belongs to the population. Would you get an Israeli referring to Mrs Thatcher as Maggie. I doubt it.

What I struggle to get my head around is how the media and seemingly most of the world are talking about him and this election as if this a perfectly normal democratic election with him as your big standard, average Joe valid candidate. Why isn’t the only question being asked ‘when is he appearing in front of the ICC in The Hague and, if not, why not?’. It seems like we’re normalising genocide and giving validation to a likely war criminal. Or am I missing something/over-reacting?

You're doing neither. It's a creeping, long-standing, disgraceful stain on so-called civilised western democracies.

No I don’t think you are. This thread is a good example of it.

I think the following is a perfectly valid line to take. 1. To oppose and condemn to the utmost what Netanyahu has done. 2. To recognise the fact that Jewish voters made Likud the biggest party and its coalition the biggest bloc. 3. To recognise that Israel is not a properly functioning democracy in the sense that only the left-leaning Democrats have contemplated some sort of arrangement with the Arab parties that would defeat Netanyahu's coalition. 4. To discuss, and be interested in, the election and the eventual outcome. [Post edited 30 Oct 16:01]

I think we are broadly in agreement. I haven't seen anyone on this thread support Likud or the war criminals and terrorist supporters in the governing coalition. Re point three though, one of the Arab parties is extremely anti-LGBTQ+ and they refuse to condemn Hamas. We shouldn’t just look at the Arab list and say that they are the good guys. Even though mostly they are. [Post edited 30 Oct 17:35]

Golan wrote in an opinion piece in Haaretz that working with the Arab-led parties won’t always be simple, but says this does not mean it shouldn’t happen. “We will present demands, stand firm on our security and national principles, and will conduct tough and practical negotiations — just as we would with any other faction in parliament,” he says. “But we will not disqualify individuals, nor will we accept the rules of the game dictated by the poison machine to keep its grip on power.” But it doesn't look like it is going to happen given Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman has reiterated his party’s refusal to join any coalition that includes the two Arab-led parties in the next Knesset. As I've said on a couple of posts, there can be an informal supply and confidence arrangement for an anti Bibi minority government which save face on all sides.
