Production logistics innit.
They don't know how many Memberships they have until mid September. Then they order the boxes, pin badges, scarves, charger leads and inserts for the whole number plus a few extra.
When manufacturers are making these things its far cheaper to order 10000 at once then to order 10 separate runs of 1000 each. Given that the pin badge contains this season's dates you want that to be an accurate amount rather than a guess as all extras are worthless and have cost the club money.
Offset printing alone is expensive to set up each time, so you want an entire print run done in one go as once the set up is done, the printing after is relatively cheap, it gets expensive if you have to set the print run up multiple times.

Yeah, but… We don’t actually need any of it do we? I’d rather they saved on buying loads of tat from China, saved on the packaging that’ll just go in the bin, and on the postage too (more unnecessary miles). It’s a waste of materials and resources, if I’m allowed to go all hippy about it.
I’d rather they gave us a few quid off the membership fee or pitched in to buy Phil and the other journos cakes at the pressers. |  |

The coffee cup was excellent and had been very well used.
Scarf this year is decent and I'll actually wear it's not a 'fan' scarf with Ipswich in huge letters.
