| Tacket Street Car Park 11:45 - Oct 27 with 2227 views | ITFC_Essex | So following on from the "City of Culture" debate, on Friday due to delays on the roads past Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury and then more delays getting into Ipswich we were only able to get parked 10 minutes before kickoff despite leaving in good time. Now I used Tacket Street car park for the first time, extremely run down, but parked, paid and left without much issue. A lot of us were in this position, so we were among a lot of late arrivals joining the still longish lines to get in, after kick off. Coming back however, witnessed four different cars all driving up to each other and exchanging packets and cash through the windows. Anyhow, after they saw we caught a glimpse, three of the cars drove to us, as we got into our cars, and then boxed us in, screaming threats at us, and revving their engines as if they are going to drive into my parked car. I then do some of my best driving to back out and get myself into a position where I can get around one of the cars quickly and attempt to move off, but these guys are clearly on gear and absolutely raging and start trying to swerve into my vehicle as I gun it for the exit. Unfortunately one is able to swing their car in front of me and start trying to intimate me further, I had to get round and they followed me out, swerving at me, and driving dangerously until we got further into town where they tailed off. My partner called the police and reported the makes/regs but it was a pretty harrowing ordeal and something I don't want to ever have to deal with again. My partner says she will not be attending an evening game again due to that, as you can expect she was totally shook up from it all. If you wonder why most people avoid Ipswich outside of match days, it's stuff like this. It's not really City of Culture stuff, and as an outsider who visits for football and gigs, it's not a great look. In fact after one gig at The Smokehouse, a female friend was apprehended and threatened at a cash point in Town, before her partner turned up. Safe to say she hasn't been back to a gig in Ipswich since then. | |

The same with Manchester or Glasgow or Cardiff etc etc. Bad things happen in places with large populations. If you want a safe quiet and boring weekend go to the countryside where nothing really interesting happens. Well apart from drug abuse amongst the youngsters. [Post edited 27 Oct 11:56]

Weird take. I'm not sure about everyone else but I do consider living in Ipswich the countryside. And certainly fair for the OP and their family to be put off by such an incident. Edited end as you've edited your comment [Post edited 27 Oct 11:57]

Can’t work out if I’m lucky or you’re unlucky, lived here 30+ years and no one in my circle of friends has ever had a problem. Seen occasional drug deal but then I’ve also seen that in the places that have made the city of culture shortlist.

I have used that car park on odd occasions and can see why it’s a good place for ‘deals’ - especially in a country where it’s politically far more expedient to ignore crime to keep the statistics looking good and to save money. Well done for reporting those animals though. Interestingly if you carry any form of defence in your car it is illegal and you will be the one up in court. You are meant to pick up anything hand if you are attacked and cannot get away. Maybe the sun visor or something. Not that it mattered. Against that number your only chance was to do precisely what you did. Sadly I fully understand why your partner says she won’t be attending an evening game again.

If being safe is boring, then colour me boring. I also avoid London for the same reasons. Bad things happen in places where people don't care enough to change it, a bit like anything in life, but most people do what I do, and just move or vote with our feet, and all thats left behind is a empty town centre, a lack of employment, and thats that, London can get away with that, Ipswich can't. Even if you ask Ipswich people, they say they go shopping in Bury or Norwich! Just because they are boring eh? Better to be boring and alive, and the countryside is superior to the city.

It's a shame as she's a convert to coming to the games, her family are supporters but she never had an interest until I took her along to one 7 or 8 years ago, and now she has a ST. I did what I had to do to keep us safe, and had to keep my sheer terror under wraps until I was on the way home to try and decompress it, I never cold sweated before that and now I know exactly what that means! Absolute nightmare fuel, and all I did was park my car!

Nothing wrong with sheer terror. It’s a defence mechanism for a reason. Outcomes are everything and that was a good one. I certainly won’t be using that car park again. Hopefully, daytime games and a more open car park, even if it costs more, will persuade her to do night games. Incidents like that are fortunately rare. You certainly don’t go to a football match to deal with a threat like that. The upside is that you dealt with it. Well done.

Can you explain how you've arrived at the conclusion that Ipswich is the countryside?

You had a bad experience in a town - things like that happen and have happened since people started living closely together. I understand how that might colour your judgement but to slag off a medium sized town because of it, I find odd. But each to their own and you’re entitled to feel like that. If something bad happened to me in the countryside then I doubt whether that’ll put me off visiting it. But dunno, maybe it would. If people want to live in the countryside then fair enough but I would find it very dull and boring. And I’ve always felt safe in Ipswich - well apart from Chicagos back in the day on a Thursday night but that’s a different set of circumstances.
| Tacket Street Car Park on 07:23 - Oct 28 with 1170 views | sibrespace | You’ve had a bad experience which must have been difficult for you all and you have my sympathy. However I’m not sure why petty crime in a dodgy car park at 10:30 at night disqualifies a place from being City of Culture? Unfortunately petty street crime is a fact of life in every large urban area? Coventry, Bradford and Hull certainly have at least as much street crime as Ipswich. As for ‘most people avoid Ipswich outside march days’, well that’s just not true. I’m not sure if you’re from Cambridgeshire or Essex, but perhaps there’s no crime there? | | | |

Exactly this. Genuinely sounds dreadful but the City of Culture point is completely redundant
| Tacket Street Car Park on 11:37 - Oct 28 with 918 views | LeBlue | The current UK City of Culture is Bradford. Take an evening stroll around Holme Wood and report back on your findings. That said, I'm sorry that you experienced what you did and that you are both OK. | | | |

Lived here for +40 years and that's my perception. A Town in the countryside. Fairly simple really.

It's simple alright but perhaps not in the sense you intend. Ipswich is very much an urban centre, a large town that could easily be counted as a city, as the city of culture debate shows.

I do use this car park match days but been lucky so far I guess but you certainly see one or two( well 10 or so) hanging around this car park or parking nearby on double yellows.

This is not London or Manchester but a small town , even getting from the Regent to car park is incredibly scary for my wife.

as pointed out in the City of Culture debate, the City of Culture is not awarded to those with the best "city of culture" else the likes of Edinburgh, Bristol, Brighton, Bath,Cambridge, Oxford... I could go on but you get the point right. Milton Keynes arent on the shortlist because theyve got some claim to being the best cultural destination of the lot, theyre there because the place is about as cultural as a kick in the head. which is exactly why Bradford has it currently and why a stroll around Holme Wood wouldnt be much fun or feature on a guided tour of City of Culture highpoints.

Ipswich is not a small town as it has a population of over one hundred and forty thousand, and over one hundred and eighty thousand if you include the immediate suburbs. Third largest population in East Anglia after Peterborough and Norwich, forty second largest urban area in England and Wales ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ ) so it can, and I think always has over the lest sixty years. be a place where crime happens - but not quite on the scale that some news sources portray, although we shouldn't ignore dreadful things like the Steven Wright murders. For what it is worth, the only time I have had a gun pointed at me was in the countryside between Rushmere and Foxhall fifty nine years ago.
