Elon Musk has ‘given’ between $450m-$480m to republicans mid terms 09:46 - Oct 29 with 1560 viewsunstableblue

That is a staggering amount of money.
Which will have a huge impact and is clearly an attempt to keep the gravy train off his business entities going and to support his bizarre far right agenda.
Some of the campaign ads have been vile.

He’s a nefarious character. And the recent star link comms withdrawal is particularly concerning.

Meanwhile fhe impact on the UK economy of Trump’s Iran war folly are wild a minimum perhaps of £70bn direct.

If there’s one thing politicians could do to rebuild faith in politics, it would be to heavily cap or remove political donations. They don’t have a vested interest to do so though, unfortunately.

My understanding is that measures related to exactly this are currently being debated/brought into law?

There was a ruling some years ago in the US which declared that organisations are independent "entities" which can participate in electoral campaigning. This spawned the modern wave of "Super PACs" (political action committees). Notionally independent of candidates, they are able to funnel unlimited money into campaigning on their behalf (tho not directly into the candidate's own campaign).

This has fuelled the spending war which now characterises US elections and why they get massive (and often vicious, by UK standards) TV ad campaigns "paid for by ...".

Fortunately, in the UK, we still have strict rules on election spending - and long may that continue. However, parties are always trying to push the limits - some of them excessively so.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

The UK government is trying to tighten up on donations (particularly from overseas). But it's tricky, as Labour, Conservatives and Reform all rely on sizeable union or individual donors and don't want to cut off their own source of supply.

The ad targeting Amy Acton is particularly reprehensible. The only good thing is it does seem to have delivered alot of blowback towards Vivek.

Apartheid Elon has James Talarico living rent free in his head. Texas race is too close to call IMO but a Talarico win would be pretty seismic. He had pumped so much money into Ken Paxton, a man who is top a grifter and slave to Trumps whims. Musk and Trump own him and they are bricking it at the thought of Texas voting blue.

Political funding in the US has long been ruled by big businesses and it has got worse. Especially now with the richest man in the world acting as Republican party sponsor

Texas and Georgia are the must watch states, huge if they bith go blue but if they do, if either house turns the fraud skims will come from the top immediately. Musk will spout it on twitter every 30 mins and sadly people will believe it.

I hope that at least some people will by now be bored of all the crying wolf.

There’s a movement towards a cap I think, but it sounds pretty lame. At the moment I think any caps will only apply to uk donors living overseas. People are calling for caps on all donations but there’s a lot of resistance. They’d need a new funding model if strict, tiny caps were brought in of course, so some of the resistance may not be purely based on greed and self-interest. The way I see it though is that any donation opens the door for cronyism. Individual party members donations are probably the cleanest source of income, but is the tax payer then prepared to fund campaigning expenses for all parties out of the public purse?

Political donations should be capped to 5% of the median wage for individuals.

$20,000 for businesses.

It’s one of those things that becomes self fulfilling - the more you spend the more you and everyone needs to spend. And then it becomes a barrier to participation and results in $1 one vote $1,000,000 one million votes politics. Not in any way a democracy.

Imagine if election spending per candidate in the UK was limited to £1000. The hard work that would have to be put into campaigning and encouraging people to come and hear you speak in person. Would be interesting to see the potential results in direct local democracy. And all that money that could be put to better economic use elsewhere.
A dream.

fingers crossed that the mid-terms reflect the current polling and musk's every last cent has been wasted.

With Musk you can add the $44 billion he spent on Twitter. In 4 years he has turned it into a propaganda machine where he pumps out tweet after tweet, these then get retweeted or rehashed as new tweets making the ripples reach further and further. Then a bunch of bots are paid to push the message out even more and becaue Twitter is an echo chamber overrun by the alt right it snowballs and before you know it tiny Tommy is tweeting it and so on.

This all feeds into the ever increasing circles of nuttyness that Truss, Hopkins, Brand, Peterson, Tate etc all occupy. Its dangerous and disturbing. Idk how much more of it I can take, I've never been a leftie, always thought of myself as very centerist and I detest what the right has become.

What scares me most is the Internet has allowed them to become so much more aligned and organised on a global level and they use that far better than other political factions.

Since 2022, it’s nearly $1bn in direct donations.

Throw in the use of X algorithms etc and it has even more impact

Saw an article in the independent about donations.

Labour get £11m a year 0.1% of which is from overseas.
Conservatives got about £14m, 5% of which is from overseas.
Reform got £120m 95% of which is from overseas, and nearly all crypto billionaires.

The sooner Labour can stop the highly dodgy overseas stuff the better.
