Dara’s habit of backing off and off and off and off and off.. 17:37 - Oct 31 with 3662 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

..when the striker is bearing down on goal is really starting to grate on me.

That equaliser today reminded me of Charlton at home last year. Absolutely diabolical defending.

Dara’s habit of backing off and off and off and off and off.. on 20:47 - Oct 31 by ITFC_84

This.
The guy’s got real history of it. Charlton and Wrexham just in the last 12 months. I can not believe a professional footballer, for a number of years, would defend like that while a player is bearing down on goal.
A shocker.

He should have just came across and wiped him out and took a booking for the team, but then again he went all last season without a booking so I guess he’s not going to start now

No booking required, just close the angles. If you are beaten and he shoots well, so be it. But a free run and shot when we have a spare defender in the box, is awful.

It was one of the worst bits of defending I've ever seen. It's not like he didn't have plenty of time to think about it, and it's basic stuff. I have no idea what was going through his head. Bizarre.

A mate of mine sums it up perfectly

Just watched it back again. Dara O'Shea is like a character in video game from 1995 with the opponent level set on the lowest setting. He just gets stuck on the wrong part of the screen.

Yes he needs to go for the most dangerous player (in this case the player with the ball) and while doing it try to minimize the angels for a pass. Instead he stays in central position and seems to only try to block the pass into the middle. Wrong decision making.

I have watched it back a few times and not entirely sure what he was thinking, did he think the player was going to cross, no idea.

Strange goal to concede at this level.

Just had a revisit on the highlights. Absolute bizarre. Just let the lad walk in.
If he was worried about cover behind... there must come a point where he thought 'f#ck it'.. I've got to challenge him'. But he didn't. He must have had remarkable faith in Walton to let him handle a 1 on 1. Absolute gift.
Sometimes with modern day defending, I think they're being too clever. Especially at PL level. It's like it's beneath them to just block and boot the ball away.

Possibly a good decision IF there was a free man in the middle. He looks behind, and there is not one...

Nothing good about it, if there was a man in the middle give the man on the ball a decision to make, don't let him get 10 yds from goal a free shot.

Bizarrely there was a man in the middle but there was an Ipswich player covering him.

Thought he was poor last week as well, cocked up for Forest’s goal and then for the Diop yellow.

I rate DOS, I do think he’s PL quality but after a pretty strong start to the season IMO he hasn’t covered himself in glory these last 2 games. He’s not the only one, but it’s a concern. His decision making for that Hull equaliser is such a head scratcher, just have no idea why he didn’t go to the ball in that situation, feels absolutely bonkers to me.

The point is OK, if we can take 4 points off the likes of Palace,Hull, Cov, Fulham, Sunderland that’s 20 points that will go a long way to keeping us up. On track for that so far, 4 from 4. Arguably ahead of track with the away win at Palace. Probably need 5 wins elsewhere if we do that, they’re going to be harder to come by but we’ve shown we can compete. Can’t help but feel we dropped 2 points yesterday though given how we dominated that 1st half, also can’t help but think we could and should’ve been 2-0 up at half time and the officials mugged us twice.

Throwing himself to the ground for Forest’s goal last week was equally ridiculous.

Problem is, Greaves is equally prone to losing his head or making rash decisions under pressure also. Saw that enough times last season in the Chamionship.

Maybe solution is to move to a back 3.

Which brings you to the fact of...where the heck were Diop and Davis?

Diop jumps out of position to try and win the ball and gets nowhere near it.

But he looked over his shoulder 2 or 3 times, there was no attacker there and Diop was there covering.

There doesn't seem to be a sensible reason why he did what he did.

The only explanation has to be he thought walton would come out and Oshea would cover the shot to far post or clean up a lofted affort.

There doesnt seem to be any other reason.

Maybe, although I don't think it's on Walton to come out there.

Just looked like he panicked, like a rabbit in the headlights.

Dara will know he c*cked up with the first goal. He also nearly gave away another with a weak header back to Walton.

But we have to give him some leeway given how solidly he generally is.

In some ways, it was a repeat of the Wrexham game and he came back from that brilliantly, so I have no doubt he will do the same from this setback.

I might add that I thought Diop had a very good game defensively.

There actually is a free hull player coming towards the second post, but he needs to go for the ball carrier in that situation as he is a much larger goal threat with a free opportunity to shoot. It is better to go for the player and then it is up to the player to find that pass, which is not for sure.

we had 2 players covering runs, that is sufficient. Dara got it so, so wrong.

It was Ouatarra covering, Diop had already sold himself in getting no where near McBurnie in their half. Not that I am disagreeing in general.

If Walton had come, he would have been in no-mans land. He did correctly, but it was a well taken finish.

Worryingly though, as somebody pointed out above, he was at fault for the Forest goal last week and would have been responsible for Diop being sent off - had he been so.

Three masssive errors in two games is a concern.

If we are going to survive this season we can't be giving stupid avoidable goals away as frequently as we have been. Not when the opposition are more than capable of scoring goals without our help.

This. I think he's been anything but solid this season. It feels like he's made a basic error at least once in every game.
