| That ref was piss poor though, wasn't he? on 20:14 - Oct 31 by ParisBlue | Ref was Thomas Kirk. You may remember him from Stoke (a) in March, the last minute penalty that wasn't and a yellow card for Kipre and a suspension. And an apology for getting it wrong 2 days later. |
He’s still sh1t…..and doesn’t like us either then 😉

It's very, very quiet.

I know it's a difficult job & most fans are vey biased, but he did a great job in the East Anglian derby (we won) but then gave Stoke that shocking late penalty, which made me worry he's a homer. This was his first PL game of the season. Credit for GON for accepting the disallowed Town goal today. I dislike a manger who endlessly moans about refereeing decisions.

It is a higher bar for a penalty. Although they were penalties. Or least they would be for Man City or Liverpool. But it's also a higher bar to disallowe.a goal for something that's fine if Hull don't, repeatedly throughout the game. I'm a ref. I can be AR in the Isthmian league!

| That ref was piss poor though, wasn't he? on 18:32 - Oct 31 by sohamblue74 | He was fcuking dreadful and VAR was even worse. Pretty sure he's the clown who gave Stoke a ridiculous injury time penalty last season. Hull fans are a really chatty and friendly bunch. Enjoyed the day. But they are such a limited team, with only one tactic, to counter attack at pace, which we totally let them do to us all second half. Will hopefully turn out to be a good point in the grand scheme of things. I LOVE Palacios though. What a truly brilliant player. |

It is not. Unless you can show me, in the laws, where it says so.

| That ref was piss poor though, wasn't he? on 18:55 - Oct 31 by redrickstuhaart | That is nonsense. A foul is a foul. A foul in the area is a penalty. Full stop. |
I'd argue almost every game of football in history says otherwise. Refs give all sorts of ridiculous soft free kicks all over the pitch. They do it to even things up, to placate a boisterous home crowd, sometimes they're just fussy. You don't tend to see them give penalties for the same offences. You'd see 5 penalties per game if what you say was true. I'm okay with not having 5 penalties a game.

No. There are a number of laws which clearly required judgment and subjectivity. But there is none that says that the law applying to a foul in the box is different to any other place on the pitch. A referee who applies that mindset is simply demonstrably wrong.

Respectfully I disagree. Again, I go back to subjectivity. Every foul has subjectivity attached to it. A good referee will think harder about giving a penalty than he will a free kick in a non-threatening area of the pitch. You'd want them to. I've always said there should be fewer soft free kicks given generally, and I think that's gradually improving. Bottom line is there are hundreds of free kicks given every week across the league/country that would not be given in the box. Call it an unwritten rule. You obviously don't think it should happen, but do you accept it does?

"the laws" isn't how referring works. There's a layer beyond that, as any one who has ever refereed can atest to. Each game has to be refereed to a different level. You can't be giving penalties for soft fouls. You can for a free kick, because the consequences are less. You can't be disallowing goals for trivial fouls, the consequences are too great. The bar is higher, one example is players are diving all over the place. It's easy to be fooled in the heat of the moment You referee a kids game, you stop the game for every single tiny injury and call every foul. Teenage boys, you allow more physicality. Seniors you call a foul anytime anyone falls over Good luck standing in the centre circle after some 8 year old girl got a ball in the face and her parents are freaking out " I'm not stopping the game. That's not what the laws say"!!!

| That ref was piss poor though, wasn't he? on 18:52 - Oct 31 by Garv | We all know that isn't how penalties work, and rightly so. There's little risk when giving a foul in the middle of the park, there's loads when it's in the box - you have to be sure (and not give in players buying decisions through simulation). I haven't seen the shirt pull incident by the way, but the 'foul' for our disallowed goal looked mega soft. |
If he’s disallowing our goal for a foul, not giving the Mendy shirt pull with VAR is incredibly annoying. He was certainly part of the fine margins but as always, I’m more annoyed about the ones we can control!

No idea why there wasn't a VAR review. I didn't see anything wrong with our goal. The Emersonn claim, I think was on the line of fair tackle/foul, teetering towards fair. Surprised it wasn't checked though. Dog poo defending and goalkeeping for both our goals. We went from the sublime to the ridiculous. GON should rightfully be pissed off at some of the decision making for the goals, and the referee team.

Agreed, but I'm glad his post match comments rarely veer into blaming the referee for Town not winning. I'm sure he knows we should have defended better yesterday. Decision making in and around the box is a key facet of pro football & hopefully he will work on these things and we will improve. We don't look like keeping a clean sheet any time soon, but at least we have had a real goal threat in most games, but it will be interesting to see if GON can improve A without weakening B.

"We don't look like keeping a clean sheet any time soon, but at least we have had a real goal threat in most games, but it will be interesting to see if GON can improve A without weakening B." This is the key question. On balance, I'd rather us keep the goal threat as that is what wins games, but if we can marginally improve the defence we could be in for a decent season. Yesterday wasn't even really about things being fundamentally wrong in defence either, it was about individual mistakes really.

Indeed and individual errors are far more likely to get punished at this level.

That is precisely the point. Referees ought not to be adding their own level of additional informal rules which they decide between themselves, or offer each other "guidance" on. The bar is NOT higher, there is nothing in the laws to provide for that. That has nothing to do with how you adapt to different games and conditions. And yes I have done....

So based on your argument here, no one can have an opinion about anything unless they have experience of the situation. Why are you here? Because most of the threads are people’s opinions on things that they’ve never done.
