Philogene and Davis 21:38 - Oct 31 with 1213 viewscbower

I have no doubt about Philogene's ability as a footballer. He showed his talent with some match winning performances at times last season. In addition, I think his defensive workrate is decent for the most part. So, this is not a straightforward 'I don't like Philogene' post.
My gripe is more that when Philogene plays (starts especially), his presence just serves to all but nullify Davis as a genuine attacking threat.
Jaden occupies the space that Davis wants to run in to. He forces Davis to go inside too much and his tendency to slow things down and turn inside means Leif's overlapping runs are reduced as an effective tool for me.
It's something that is a conundrum and was a little hidden last year as we had more of the ball in general and Leif was making more overlapping runs which Jaden exploited by cutting inside and shooting with great success.
What to do? That's for O'Neil to solve.

Not sure what O’Neill is seeing with Jaden that we aren’t. Thought Maeda has shown enough to be starting every week tbh, and we probably look defensively better with Daizen’s intense pressing work.

Maeda is a high presser but not an inverted winger. Thats what o neil loves.

100% agree.

Completely agree. What has happened to David getting forward and putting balls in that we saw in the first 3-4 games in the season? Hasn’t happened at all since the intl break and no coincidence that this is when Philogene came back into the side.

Philogene has been underwhelming but was pretty good on the first goal, his involvement mirrored what he done before Furlong’s goal at the Valley. With Hull being such a low block out of possession team I can see why GON played him, rather than a presser out of possession. I do like Maeda a lot though and he can count himself a little unlucky.

Davis plays dangerously high for a bottom half team, his best defending is always a recovery rather than back to goal behind the ball. Obviously it’s a trade off with his attacking threat but the notion he’s been greatly improved defensively is somewhat questionable, it’s his athleticism that’s provided some key moments but not true defending one on one if that makes sense.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

When Jaden plays Leif is not the same player, when Maeda was ahead of Leif at the beginning of the season we were very strong down the left side, we should go back to that

Maeda all day long should play for me, gives us much better protection defensively and great offensively too. He will all day long and win a 40/60 whereas Jaiden bottles a 60/40.

Maeda's movement and awareness is way ahead of Jaiden's.

Except that Maeda is our option on the right to replace Fatawu.

Unless we play him on the left for an hour and then he swaps sides when Clarke comes on.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I have said it often before and has been an issue since McKenna moved away from the Leif bombing, using a second striker/10 like Broadhead/ Szmodics on that side, allowing Leif empty pastures to run into with a screening midfielder like Luongo to work horizontally to cover his runs. Burgess was also effective at patrolling that left area.

What we have now is Clarke/Philogene blocking the areas Leif wants to work into, which also brings extra defensive cover in and saturates that area. Our 2 midfielders are in general central and vertical in their playing style and don't cover back those vulnerable wide areas, and Diop is an old fashioned central stopper. It is not ideal.

Playing Mats in his usual role would help by sweeping horizontally, he has a natural nose for danger and so far he has not looked out of place in the cameos he has played and let Palacios do the vertical, up and down work supporting attack and defence as and when, particularly when away from home.

McKenna tried inverting Leif but it rarely worked, so we are left with a largely nullified Leif. People point out that Leif is defending better by saying he has saved the day with goal line clearances recently. So what, Nsiala did that also in his day. What defenders should be judged on is cutting out attacks at their source, not being beaten ends up by wingers, not being continually caught in the wrong position. This is not Leif's strength, though it has improved, but still not to premier level. It is a conundrum as you say.

In an ideal world yes I agree but he's that good he can play anywhere along the front.
