As a goalkeeper he had claimed the ball, in a bad tempered game, and while he was on the ground holding the ball the centre forward toe punted him in the side of the head - CF fled the scene, cue ambulance, police etc. Guy was on parole, went back inside, my friend never played football again. I never played Sunday league again after this, played Saturday but that was at a decent amateur level where players took the game more seriously and weren't hungover / lookinmg for a fight.

It was a bizarre mix of very good teams and teams that were just there to out-thug everyone. I'm talking serious high tackles, elbows of the ball, even a right hook if they thought the ref wasn't watching. Was always more difficult trying to get a squad to be available to play the latter type of team. One team in particular were awful, a pub-sponsored team from the south of the town (who I won't name). I still get shivers from their antics. The poor refs officiating their games always had a nightmare.
