Time for Palmer? 09:34 - Nov 2 with 2302 viewsWallingford_Boy

Scherpen dumped in the bin, Walton now looking more and more of a liability, what's next?

Palmer?

He has never really let us down.

Slicker still around?

A new keeper signed in Jan?

What a mess!

RIP Sir Bobby

Walton made one error on Saturday. He has also made some really good saves in recent games. He's our best keeper atm.

Palmer is not an upgrade on Walton. In the PL last time, he looked very shaky, 4 goals conceded in successive games.

Are we forgetting crucial saves made in recent weeks by Walton give us the vital points we've needed to stay clear of the drop zone already? This hyper fixation of the keepers is becoming the new normal here at Ipswich. The same with O'Sheas contributions. Neither are Premier League players, but they have both massively stepped up this season and have done far more good than bad. If we're calling for Palmer, who equally isn't a Premier League keeper, are we also looking at Kipre to come in for O'Shea due his mistakes? Greaves in a left back every time Davis thumbles?

An elephant in the room relative to the money we've spent that doesn't seem to get mentioned by anyone is Flemming. Hardly inspiring when he comes on, if that were George Hirst he'd be getting pelters for those largely flat performances he's had for Town so far.

I think both goals were bad on his part ...

For the first you have to make the striker shoot across you. Thats where the cover is. Instead he lets him just pass it round him.

Second is inexcusable. He just lets him pass it into the corner. He does not need to protect the other side. If Oli Mcburnie gets it up and down from there it's a goal whoever is in net.

His goals prevented stat was -1.18 and his total for the season is -1.6. Bart Verbruggen is on 4.4 for the season. Whilst other GKs are winning their teams points, ours are losing them.

He gets a pass for this one but he's now statistically worse than Scherpen.

We need both of them to step up and start getting us points.

O'Shea has been outstanding for us and Kipre is miles off the required level, so that one is a big no.

Greaves is a great option on the left if Davis is unavailable, but again, not a change I would be looking to make.

I still think we are missing a top level keeper and a top level goalscorer, but I realise those are probably the two hardest positions to get right!

I do think we need to find an alternative to Walton, even if that means bringing in a short term fix.

The answer isn't Palmer though.

No I don't think he is either, just a suggestion.

Forgot about Button tbh, but can't get that error at Oxford out of my head!

I was joking about Button, he's 58.

FWIW I don't think Palmer or Walton are PL quality really, although at this stage there's really no justification in considering Palmer. If Walton drops out it would have to be for Scherpen, but how that would play out who knows. He looked alright against Sunderland but came in for criticism against Liverpool and Palace.

Flemming has the same number of goals as Emersonn in far fewer minutes (zero starts).

For me he's looked useful most times coming on. He's there to cause chaos for defenders and be physical, he's not going to look as silky as Emersonn. If anything he deserves a start.

Said this on another thread. Flemming got 11 goals for Burnley in the Prem so has potential at this level. It's a healthy situation having them both; doubt Fleming will be happy waiting in the wings. He'll be knocking on the door

Agreed. I also think Emersonn will cause havoc for tiring defences if he comes on after seventy minutes.

Choice is between Sherps and Walts.

There isn't much to separate Walton and Sharpen so far on the biggest stuff (as measured by boffins). Neither has found the adjustment easy.

They're both tracking to concede 4 goals more than they ought to over a 10 game period, joint 2nd worst alongside Roefs.

They aren't helped though by the fact we've faced the 3rd most shots in the league and the 3rd most shots on target. Not unlikely potshots either as we have the 2nd highest 'expected goals against us', which tracks with the fact we've conceded the 2nd most goals. Cleaning that up would be a big help, much as there is a balance to be struck between containing the oppo and creating ourselves.

I wouldn't be pressing the Palmer or Button button just yet lol. Will be a great help if our crowd is calmly behind whichever keeper GON opts for while we're not able to make a market move. Think that's easier achieved with Walton and I trust his feet a bit more, but an improved Scherpen who saves more and dominates his 6-yard box would be ideal please.

Simply playing devil's advocate.

No-one seems happy with Walton, so was looking at the alternatives.

On a roll, looking to drop Emersonn yesterday for lack of goals and today writing off Scherpen and Walton.

What's tomorrow's gem, GON out for failing to have us in the Champions League positions, Palacios to be dropped for not smiling enough . . .

Better shot stopper than Walton and better positionally but it won’t happen, it would look like a desperation move. We will have to try and make it to January and make a move, if we don’t there is no doubt Scherpen will play again at some point this year unfortunately.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

He really isn’t he had the number 1 shirt under McKenna until he got injured last season, both are average, Palmer is probably better. McKennas never drops keepers if they come in and do ok though, see Vaz as well.
