| Hirst dropped from Scotland squad 14:01 - Nov 3 with 1991 views | unstableblue | I do hope things turn around for George Hirst at Stoke. When he’s playing at his best he’d a good striker and front man. He had some decent appearances for us in the last premier league campaign. And scored crucial goals at League One and Champ level for us. Always been a streaky player I think. | |

| Hirst dropped from Scotland squad on 13:52 - Nov 4 by NedPlimpton | So Hirst is only a good player when the rest of the team are a higher level than upper-mid championship? This doesn't really make much sense to me I think it's pretty obvious there's been a drop off in form from him and you're just trying to find reasons to knock Stoke rather than be critical of Hirst |
You do realise that Enciso suffered with this when he was here last time, being supported by a midfield which featured the likes of Mass, Taylor, and Morsy in the Premier League, and as a result he didn't perform as well, so by your logic because he couldn't turn water into wine in that side, he wasn't much cop? Hirst was playing in a much better side last season than they have at Stoke. That will mean he got better service, support, guidance, movement, on the pitch, and thus be more effective. It's a team game, it's not 1996, a single player can't carry teams in the same way anymore. If Hirst is failing at Stoke, a chunk of that will be due to the system, manager and who he's playing with, because we have seen what he can do when all those elements are right and he's more than a bench player in the Championship. If he were at a Southampton, where they have good footballers, and play with more of a IQ, he'd be much more useful.

That's one way of looking at it. But doesn't really account for good players playing in poor sides, right? I think most people can see the difference between Enciso from 2 years ago and Enciso now. He's definitely less selfish, even though that's a criticism that still occasionally comes his way, rightly or wrongly. He's also a couple of years more mature as a professional footballer. So to say it's down to the team around him being the reason he's performing better seems a bit of an over-simplification

Hirst wasn't great last season so it's not a surprise he's not that good this season Between him and Azon, they both went a period of 14 games without a goal, in a league where we were top end. 17 big missed chances too himself We all loved the 'forward' role Hirst gave us in promotions seasons, but that aspect of his game somehow got lost when we signed Delap. Hirst went from front line linker to trying to emulate delap in how he turned with the ball before he'd even won it. He lost the ball most of the time, and stopped winning battles - Approx only 30% of ground duels won last season He's scored 5 goals this calender year. The george hirst we enjoyed is long gone, it begun last season and is continuing for Stoke. It's not about those around him, he's career since injury and what ever football work he went through last summer has changed the forward he was and that forward just isn't good enough now. I expect him to turn up in league 1 next season
