The Isak non penalty 17:31 - Nov 3 with 1395 viewsGarv

And the unnecessary fallout...

Should a penalty ever really be given if not one single player appeals for it?

I was surprised to realize I was agreeing with Martin Keown yesterday when he covered it. Everyone was dead set on it being a penalty and that Isak was impeded, but did anyone think to get Isak's thoughts on it? You know, the guy that was central to the incident and made nothing of it?

Not sure Iraola's message of encouraging diving and play acting is the way to go.

Surely not getting decisions unless players appeal for it is only going to encourage diving and play acting? Players shouldn't have to go to ground and shout at the referee to get them given.

Yes. If decisions are not given for clear fouls, you encourage people to go down.

My abiding thought was if that's a penalty than Dara's definitely was

If only there was a team of experts watching numerous camera angles to assist a referee who is not really able to have eyes everywhere.

Difficult one that as was such a blatant pull. But I see where you are coming from because just feels like Isak can't have thought it effected him much given zero appeal.

There is a big difference between appealing for a pen and diving. I think Isak should be making it clear he was held. Madness to just not even react really.

Diving is completely different.

This isn't cricket. Decisions are given by the Referee, on their initiative alone (aided by the Assistant Referees). The players should have nothing to do with it, let alone appealing.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

If you're agreeing with Keown you almost certainly know you're wrong.

We shouldn't be encouraging players to go down. If it's a foul, its a foul. The pull on the shirt almost certainly stopped him from getting his head on the ball. Would have scored? Who knows. But its a clear foul

I agree on the whole, but if no player reacts it's not really going to encourage the referee to give something.

I don't want to encourage players to go down, the opposite, but I'd expect some sort of authentic appeal.

Isak made nothing of it, I don't think that should be ignored.

A shirt pull as obvious as that, gets given anywhere else on the pitch. It's pretty crazy it wasn't given as a penalty.

Isak has been punished for not throwing himself to the floor.

It was certainly a penalty, you pull someone's shirt from the wrong side in the box, and it did seem to end up costing Isak making contact with the ball.

I don't think there's any debate around it being a penalty.

Iraola surely has a valid point, if Isak goes down or hounds the ref, they're going to take a real look at it, it's not right, but when you have incompetence amongst the refs, they need a bit of guidance as to what they do and don't need to look at.

I've been saying this for years but the only way to stop the increasing levels of simulation in the modern game is to start giving fouls in incidents where the attacker tries to stay on his feet .

After this one we heard "he should have gone down" from the pundits. This is a self created problem and one that with VAR could easily be fixed.

We either need to move to a model where VAR reviews everything and the ref is just their on field representative, or bring in an appeals system where if you appeal and it's wrong you're penalised like other sports.

Neither seem like good options to me.

I agree. Any shirt pulling must be a yellow. And it doesn’t necessitate players going to ground as just the pull should be enough. The ref saw it so what on earth did he think the effect was!
Isak had a clear chance so it shouldn’t matter whether he would have scored or not. I’m sure if refs get clear instructions to book players especially when corners/free kicks are taken then they would stop all the holding etc.
As for the feigning injury then quick recovery, again I’d firstly only stop for head injury (that is supposed to happen!) and then player should not return for 2 minutes as a proper head injury needs time for player to recover. If the player has say leg injury then his team should kick to touch when next in possession to get help on pitch not stop the game. Players are so delicate these days unlike rugby players!!

Surely a clear and obvious error made by the ref needs to be picked up VAR isn't that what it is there for? If it isn't something is clearly wrong with the system.

The appeal thing would be an absolute disaster.

So it'll probably come in next season.

The one thing that has not been mentioned is that if it was thought to be a goal scoring opportunity, it would have been a red card too, as Timber is not attempting to play the ball.

Double jeopardy does not apply if no genuine attempt to play the ball.

It would only be a yellow and penalty if Isak was deemed to not be able to get to the ball.

Arsenal definitely dodged a bullet with the non decision.
