There’s states in play now that nobody even forecast were winnable. Crazy. Trumps live tweeting is going to be quite good over the coming hours. I’d worry if I lived in Iran right now though. He’s going to do something even more batsh*t than normal isn’t he?

There are comparisons (on A whole different scale granted) that the democrats like labour in the UK didn’t actually have to do and didn’t do much to get success as the Trump administration and tories were so bad. Jon Ossoff … the next election may be too early but I can see him being acceptable to the wider electorate.

Hopefully if he does anything too stupid they will impeach him. Obviously it wouldn't get past the senate and would be purely symbolic but it would certainly distract him for a while.

Ossoffs speech earlier tonight was deeply impressive. I’d never heard him speak before tonight and I thought he was excellent. The epitome if what you’d want in a leader based on one ten minute inspirational speech

When either party plays its hand too far left or too far right, they’ll get dumped, just like 2024. Iran and gas prices have clearly had a huge impact in rural America though. Texas doesn’t surprise me as much, there has been a big shift in population growth from the likes of California to TX to with Austin etc Iowa and the Carolinas are the prime example of people voting with their wallets. Those have been safe red strongholds that aren’t exactly new tech hubs.

Normalcy?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 This is a country that saw what happened on Jan 6th and said, hmmm, I like that - this guy seems fine. And he got even more votes in 2024 than he did in 2016! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

A terrible indictment of the Democrats from 2020-2024. Every American election is generally about how much you hate who is power and what have you done for me lately. [Post edited 4 Nov 6:50]

Nobody in their right mind would think a poor democratic showing in Biden’s term would be remotely comparable to Jan 6th. They don’t care about normalcy they care about gas prices. If bin Laden ran and promised lower gas prices he’d win…

I’m trying to tell you how it works with the electorate, you don’t have to believe me. Normalcy is kitchen table issues in the here and now and having some extra cash in your pocket in election terms, as we have seen tonight. People do have short memories over here, I’m not going to disagree with that. The country is basically 50/50 and certainly groups and demographic can quickly swing one way or another. What you describe as normalcy is affordability. And to my point, I don’t think they care how normal or otherwise a candidate is if they thought they could bring gas prices down.

Spot on. The worst thing the Dems could do is over interpret this as a huge win for them. They are still by and large in disarray and nobody really knows what they stand for. This was a protest against the orange buffoon in the same way 2024 was a protest against Biden and higher gas prices.

Well, considering the situation in the Middle East, the mid terms were somewhat economic election more than the 2024 presidential election. The Dems went pretty left (in American terms) under Biden, that played a part, along with an economy that wasn’t exactly flying back then either. Will be curious to see if tonight ended any aspirations Vance has in ‘28 and to whether the GOP go back more of their historic and traditional Reagan routes. The Democrats need to realize this is a massive rebuke Tariffs and Iran rather than a huge endorsement of their current state. The polls have them about as popular as the IRS themselves right now! So they’ll have to play it smarter this time.

If they go super progressive and not centrist it won’t end well. They provided a lot of lay ups in 2024.

| The Midterms 2026 on 08:01 - Nov 4 with 1673 views | iamatractorboy | Whenever we have 'massive swings' in results like this I wonder how many people actually changed the way they voted. I suspect the answer is pretty low. 3%? 5%? People are likely to be entrenched in their voting choices. As someone else said, a few (percentage wise) have been persuaded to vote blue because it costs a few more bucks to fill up their pick up truck, not because they are repulsed by the idea of a lying, convicted fraudster and adjudicated sex assaulter holding the highest office in the land. Edit: oops, forgot to add, 'quite clearly racist'. [Post edited 4 Nov 8:03]

Kansas, Iowa, Texas and South Carolina would like a word with this theory. There is a pretty huge rebuke, look at the last time some of them elected senators in the midterms. Also rather than look at the overall population, it’s more prudent to look at certain demographics and it’s always state specific of course. Latinos and young Gen Z males have swung massively for example from 2024 to the mid terms (and shown up).

Priorities, eh? 😒 In a nutshell, am I right in thinking the Democrats winning the House was expected, but Senate was thought to be trickier and a much closer race than its turned out to be? So the Repubs have had a good kicking?

Yes but if you hold the senate and house you have a fair amount of legislative power in terms of what can get through. Also it really does make the admin come to the table in terms of policy in one degree or another, especially if you’re serious about winning the next presidential election.

Yes. Albeit over the last few weeks it had become more likely than not they’d take the senate too. Candidate quality of Trump backed senate candidates has likely been their downfall here. House was a slam dunk as it’s basically a referendum on the president. [Post edited 4 Nov 8:30]

The House was always on the cards, that always basically happens to the sitting administration. The Senate was considered an outside chance a year ago, to a possibility a few months ago, to the betting favorite in recent weeks. The bigger surprise is some of these deep red states electing democratic senators. South Carolina, Kansas, that’s as Republican as it gets traditionally. Hopefully we get a more moderate coming together. [Post edited 4 Nov 8:37]
