What was the name for a temporary portacabin classroom in the 80s?

My wife and I are from very different geographical regions of the UK.

They were just portakabins for us in SE Essex.

EDIT: Note we also had huts which were pre-fab building constructed in the 1950s, but differed from the temporary and supposedly portable classrooms added in the late 70s and early 80s.

Yes, 'mobiles' here in Northumberland. Seemed strange to me after leaving school as the 'mobiles' didn't move in approx 40 years.

Both primary and secondary had them and for some reason I thought they called them different things … in my head there was a T name which now looks like it could have been terrapin on checking…! Pretty sure they were called mobiles though …. Suffolk both schools left primary in ‘83 for secondary.

It was "mobiles" or "portacabins" for me in Herts and Beds.

"Prefab" for my wife in the North West.

Oh, and "Rem Room".

As in "Remedial"...

It was the 70s, things were grim then for anyone deviating from the norm in any way.

None of the schools I went to (50s/60s) had any temporary class rooms. We just had larger classes.


There were plenty of pre-fabs used for housing in the village.
