McAteer’s goals today and vs Brum 22:01 - Apr 19 with 1581 viewsSomethingBlue

Stunning football - rapid, “vertical”, fluent, razor sharp. In many other Town seasons I can think of you might be picking goal of the season from those two. In the Prem they’d be replayed over and over but people seem unhappy we aren’t scoring five of those each week. We’ll have a hell of a highlights reel from this season. Really not bad for what I continue to read in some quarters is such a poor and disappointing side.

Indeed. I think the "poor" and "disappointing" is coming for a position of entitled expectation.

Think we will be better for this season, next season if we don’t go up and get cleaned out player wise and keep McKenna.

Still big question marks over this teams ability against teams lower in the table than us away from home.

It’s been a funny old season, this team hasn’t captivated me at all so far.

I feel like I have spent all season waiting for us to go into top gear. Fine, there has been moments but it has all been to inconsistent with a once a month horror show thrown in.

Now, we are in a real battle with three really tough away games in quick succession and some players look cooked after an hour because the players brought in to supplement and support them have sadly shown they can't be trusted to the same extent.

One big push now and we may just fall over the line while hoping somehow, that points are dropped elsewhere.

Next season we are unlikely to see at least 2 of the relegated clubs start as badly as Leicester and Saints did.

Unless Milwall win their last 3 which is very possible I just don’t see us finishing above Southampton.

They aren’t dropping points at home v Bristol City or away at Preston

Today's goal was fantastic and is as good as will be seen all season but we weren't great in the 2nd half.

Passages of play like that this season have been the exception rather than the rule as in 23/24. And I include the chance yesterday that Furlong had which Azon set up.

Because it’s a different team, the opposition have defended very differently against us and we have laid out a different approach as a result.

It’s also very different to how the 1999/2000 team played and the 91/92 if we are comparing against other promotion teams in the last 30 years?

Totally agree on the last point, it’s been a strange season. Whilst we’ve done okay on the whole in terms of ppg, I’ve struggled to enjoy the slow and passive football- especially some of the dour away games.

I’m not convinced staying down for another season will necessarily be a good thing, the league will be much stronger with two established PL sides dropping, and no doubt Birmingham and Wrexham investing heavily again. The only upside is I don’t think any of our best players have been consistent enough (Jaden, Clarke, Davis) for PL sides to come in for them. Possibly Matisuwa - he’s been phenomenally consistent, head and shoulders our best signing.

I think O’Shea, Clarke and Philogene will all be subject to interest if we stay down, perhaps Davis too. Matisuwa doesn’t look quick enough to step up so can’t see that being much of a risk. Coventry will have their eyes on a couple of our players I think knowing that they’ll have half an eye on the championship the season after next.

McAteer was trying that move all first half at Pompey and it wasn’t working with Hirst (who obviously prefers the ball over the top). It was an excellent goal and thought he battled well.

Yeah, but why didn’t we keep Broadhead or Burgess?

Something like that anyway.

I don't see people queing up for Matusiwa to be honest. If he had a yard of extra pace maybe, but he doesn't. I think he is one of many in our squad that is a very good Championship player but would struggle somewhat in the prem. The jump up in quality is huge.

Criticism is valid. Over-the-top criticism isn't worth the time of day. I read some incredible things sometimes about this – imperfect but at the end of the day more than competent, consistent and generally very good to watch – side.

The Furlong chance at 0-0 was equally good football, shame it fell to the player least likely to take it.

We also carved them up all of the first half.

Again, the issues that I saw yesterday, were our transitional attacks. Apart from the McAteer goal, the pass from midfield was so often a yard behind where it was supposed to be. I mentioned it after the Millwall game, and this was similar in that we actually had loads of transitions that the 22/24 team would have turned into genuine opportunities, but we managed to slow down with execution which was just a bit off....
