Surprised that the Clarke/Humphreys options have been taken 09:52 - Jun 15 with 2839 viewsZx1988

I presume that the additional year will come with a PL salary uplift. In which case, surely they'll end up costing us money whatever happens?

I can't see that either of them would get a permanent move that would match or beat their wages here, and I imagine we'd have to cover a chunk of their salaries if they were loaned out?

I'm struggling to see the logic on this one.

It'll still impact the fee though.

Take Harry Clarke - Capology had him as being on £15k a week last season. Even if he just gets a 1/3 uplift for promotion, that's a guaranteed £20k a week for 26/27.

Maybe my assessment of salaries is out of whack, but he's not going to get £1m a year elsewhere so, if we do look to sell him, we'll either have to make up any shortfall, or accept a much lower fee in order for his new club to meet his salary demands.

I presume that's with a view to him being the 'squad-exempt' third GK, a bit like the likes of Richard Wright and other ageing English 'keepers have been?

You would have to assume both will ultimately move on. But that squad already looks quite large!

We wont necessarily have to make up a shortfall, when a player has 1 year left on their deal and another club puts 3 years under their nose its not uncommon at all to take a bit of a haircut on wages.

The other way of looking at it is why wouldn't we trigger it, pay him a wage for the next couple of months, if we're confident we can get a fee for him in August or at worst a loan fee and his wages covered. I doubt he'll be on a salary that's too out of whack with what Championship clubs will offer given he joined in L1.

We clearly see value in both, whether we sell or loan out. In the 2025 accounts we made £3M in player loans for the 24/25 season. Presumably we'll make close to double that for 25/26 with the loans we had out.

So whether we loan or sell, they are assets and have a value.

Either option looks better to me than them going on a free.

We won't be loaning them out, we will sell them and get a fee that will eclipse one months wages. Those deals are already a way down the track, you'd imagine.

To get a fee for them.

They will both have suitors

Harry Clarke is a 25 year old with 175 games under his belt, 7 of those in the Premier League, entering his prime as a defender.

He is absolutely worth a fair sum and is hopefully over his injury issues which hampered him early on with us, why wouldn't we take up his contract option?

Another manager may also like him, you just can't tell.

Formed a wonderful partnership with Wes, when they were both here / fit. I don't know if that partnership would be good enough for the Premier League these days, however.

(Would also require Burns to accept a new contract, of course)

Both just had impressive loan speel, both are classified as homegrown players - letting either walk out the door for nothing would be crazy.

We'll get a fee for both if we elect to sell that their PL wage level wouldn't jeopardise - neither have signed new deals since we've been a PL club last time round so are only due uplifts

I'm more surprised we've made an offer to Button, since he'll take up a squad place if we go down that route.

Two playes who we could get a fee for so why release them and let them move for a free?

Biggest problem is how do we get rid of Ogbene and Szmodics, possibly Akpom too and not get our pants pulled down?

Ultimately, its a case of we risk losing assets for zero, or, we take a punt on getting sale fees or load fees.

If they get sold, they are likely to get a cut of fee as well so may well offset wages offered.

We'll want 3 keepers in the squad with no 3 never having any expectation of playing unless there's a dire emergency. The younger keepers need to be out playing on loan so it makes sense imho

With PL squad space limited to just 25, then with Button it would essentially become 24.

In our previous Prem squad we had Slicker U21 as 3 meaning we had an extra slot.

At that level the value of a transfer fee dwarfs the value of wages. £20k a week for a year is ~£1m, even if we had to pay off half of it you'd still make money on quite a modest fee.

My understanding is that Button wouldn't count, as a home-grown player.

It's a 'trick' that a lot of Premier League clubs use for the third GK these days - Richard Wright, Fraser Forster, John Ruddy, and Tom Heaton are all good examples.

He would count, the reason those clubs do it is because they don't have the required 8 Homegrown players (i.e. trained in England) in their 25 so they just have a 3rd keeper to be one of them

I don't think thats entirely right.

The bigger PL clubs include British 3rd choice goalkeepers in the squad as it means they can pack out their squads with more foreign players.

You need 8 homegrown in the squad, and we wouldn't currently have an issue with that anyway.

He would definitely count as far as I understand it.

Ahh, gotcha.

I'd have thought we'd be fine with the current squad, unless significant churn is expected?

I make the following as fitting the criteria:

Palmer
Clarke
Davis
Burns
Hirst
Philogene
Slicker
Taylor
Johnson
Furlong
Al-Hamadi
McAteer
Szmodics
Greaves
Baggott
O'Shea
Walton
Akpom
Humphreys
Mehmeti
Clarke

I make that 21, so we'd be going some not to have eight in the squad after player trading, no?
