Lots of goals in this world cup so far 07:23 - Jun 18 with 644 viewsDubtractor

Lots of world cups produce cagey and dull group games, clearly not the case in this one so far.

I should caveat that last night is the first game I've watched in full, so possibly the scores have been misleading, but I imagine the numbers speak for themselves.

On last night's game, if we'd scored 2 or 3 more it wouldn't have flattered us, based on that second half performance.

With the exception of the quarter breaks which are an abomination, I think the World Cup has been pretty fun so far. Some enjoyable football. Lots of teams really giving it a go. A bit of an antidote to the cagey stuff we are served up a lot in the leagues at the moment.

It's because of two things:

More weaker teams at the WC to score against.

As the majority of 3rd placed teams progress, you can afford to lose your first match
So the handbrake is off.

According to Joe Hart on the post-England game BBC analysis show we will be seeing fewer goals scored from distance as the goalkeepers get more used to the variation in shot speed caused by this World Cup ball and the difference between roof closed and roof open/no roof stadiums so enjoy it while you can.

Also, set pieces are no longer wrestling matches so more genuine goal scoring opportunities are being created.

Yes, corners have been a big improvement.

Standard of goalkeeping has been pretty poor so far, lots of goals that should have been saved.

It probably makes me a bad person but I'm looking forward to the game where Germany have it demonstrated to them that going with a 40 year old Manuel Neuer was a bad idea.
