Must be heart-breaking to not even get some minutes against Haiti, despite being taken with the squad. Assuming they don't go though, he wont have played a game for Scotland at this World Cup. I know he has his critics, but compared to those ahead of him he has scored 21 goals in the top two tiers of English football over the past three seasons. If he played for Celtic or Rangers, he'd have had 60 odd during the same period. Shankland and Dykes are a couple of donkeys in their 30's. Dykes wouldn't start for our second string if he was here.

| George Hirst on 21:59 - Jun 24 with 3783 views | Kentish_Tractor | Are we talking about the same George Hirst? On current form no he isn't any better than those other players. Possibly on par with Dykes. Hirst wouldn't have scored 60 in the Scottish Prem. He averages a goal in around every 4.5 games since signing for us. He just isn't a good goalscorer. And Scotland need goalscorers as they are very weak at the back. Shankland can finish. [Post edited 24 Jun 22:00]

So he's worse than...Lyndon Dykes?

This feels relevant so I'll leave it here even though the op was very Scotland centric. This short thread so far doesn't hate on Hirst but does have a lot of lines of reality about it. Where I would go further at this point is that I honestly believe his time with us is now up. I think GON will want to give him a chance as one of those that got us here, but we have struggled in that forward department, and despite his actual goal return, in truth it wasn't high enough last season and I think his ceiling is an upper championship level. I think having him kick around as third choice because of loyalty may be the type of thinking that holds us back. We need a bit of a siege mentality to some regard when looking at what happened last time we were in this position. Equally there are areas of the team we are well stocked and we may not need to use our funds to develop, increasingly I do worry though and at a risk of contradicting myself I'm hearing more and more discourse that we don't have a Premier league ready squad, and I wonder quite how much upheaval is required. If we do fall down the line of taking a whole front line including selling George, offloading the disaster signing that is akpom and AAH our funds and scouting resources will be tested like never before in terms of ability. Its been good having George, but it's time for someone else to enjoy him before he gets frustrated with a lack of play time or the fans turn in the event of a poor return from him.

Agree with all of that. He is still better than Lyndon bloody Dykes though!

Even when he’s fully firing, I don’t think he has what a PL team needs. I’ve loved his time with us but we definitely need better. A team like us in the premier league needs strikers who can create something out of nothing (like Delap could do) and/or someone who can create for others (like Kane can do). Hirst, for me, can do neither of those things at the level needed. McKenna created teams where the likes of Ladapo and Kayden Jackson could score for fun, he did the same for Hirst. That didn’t happen in the PL last time for Hirst, and I I fear it won’t again.

Absolute nonsense. Dykes wouldn’t get anywhere near our bench let alone starting.

But Dykes has a 1 goal in 5 games record for Scotland, whereas Hirst is 1 in 10. Che Adam’s 1 in 4, Shankland 1 in 3. Who would you pick if you were Scotland manager and you need a goal?

| George Hirst on 00:48 - Jun 25 with 2764 views | Smoresy | I've heard R5L discuss Scotland's striker options in decent detail over the past fortnight and Hirst was absent from these chats, with pundits covering the other four instead. Unsure if that's reflective of their own thoughts or rather Clarke's understood pecking order, but it's a bit odd given he's there and played in the last friendly IIRC. | | | |

I’d have probably picked Oli McBurnie! Scotland are such a strange team. Dour manager, dour football. The euphoria of getting to a WC for the first time in however long and then approach every game like they’re MM going for a 0-0 draw away at Wigan. Scotland and South Africa so far for me by far the worst teams at this tournament.

I think you'll find Ross Stewart replaced Conway. Hirst has been in all the camps since his 1st call up, and that was why he went to the WC.

Talking of Angus Gunn, this from BBC's match report last night . Ouch! "When it broke to Vini Jr the best efforts of Angus Gunn in goal could not stop him. In his own moment of terror, Gunn acted like a man jumping out of a cupboard trying to spook somebody. The Brazilian just took it round him and tapped it home."

I think that would be true of most goalkeepers in that situation, much as it pains me to say it about an ex-Nodge but Gunn has been decent and I think Scotland would have lost by even more against Brazil, and maybe a couple more against Morocco, if one of the other two keepers had been in goal.

In fairness to Gunn, he stopped that game from ending 5 or 6 nil to Brazil.

| George Hirst on 08:39 - Jun 25 with 1711 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | Oli McBurnie should have gone but he does not get on with Steve Clarke. Dykes may not be better than Hirst, but definitely more of a physical problem for defenders to deal with than Hirst. Shankland is a better goalscorer, and Che Adams is a different type of player, but better and more experienced too. The only player you could make the argument for is Ross Stewart maybe, but even he is probably better than Hirst. Am I surprised he got 0 minutes? Not really... as harsh as it may sound. | |

Just opinions, if he's not at least our third choice striker this season we are in a whole bucket of trouble, Read what greyhound says, his time is up here
