| Alternative to penalties 23:29 - Jul 7 with 2821 views | Cheltenham_Blue | Hear me out. You start extra time as normal, but every 5 minutes, each team has to take off one player. If still drawing at the end of extra time, you go into an unlimited “overtime” and one player comes off every 5 as before, this is the ‘next goal wins’ stage. This continues until you effectively end up with rush keepers and it becomes a 1 v 1 duel. | |

| Alternative to penalties on 08:10 - Jul 8 with 1761 views | MattinLondon | Why does there have to be an alternative to penalties? If teams can’t be separated after 120 mins of football then at least penalties are relatively straight forward and provides drama. That suggestion is simply pissing about. | | | |

I still think the golden goal should be brought back. You score, you win. Simples

| Alternative to penalties on 09:27 - Jul 8 with 1609 views | Porksmith99 | Not sure if this is at all feasible unless you disregard player welfare and recovery (not to mention a higher risk of injuries). In a tournament like the World Cup it seems grossly unfair that a team that had gone through such an exhausting qualification could, potentially, face a team in the next round that has only played 90 minutes. If this were in a cup game imagine the consequences on the league games... | | | | Login to get fewer ads

How about the first goal scored in extra time counts double (similar to how the away goal rule used to work in European two-legged matches)? That way, if a team concedes , it doesn't mean they are immediately eliminated but an equalizer wouldn't be enough and they'd have to score at least two to progress. It might encourage attacking football as there isn't such a big risk as there is with a golden goal scenario.

What if penalties were taken before extra time instead of after? The team that wins the shoot-out would carry that advantage into extra time. So, if the match is still level after 30 minutes of extra time, the shoot-out winner takes the game. That means the team that lost the shoot-out has no choice but to attack, while the other side has to decide whether to defend their advantage or try to kill the game off with another goal. I think it would make extra time far more entertaining. Instead of both teams sitting deep and playing cautiously because they're worried about conceding, one team would be forced to chase the game, creating a much more open and exciting contest.

An alternative to the Golden Goal could be to have a Golden Shower competition. I won't go into details on here as to how this would be staged and how it would work.

Think that was abolished because in the majority of matches (that went to extra time) both teams simply cancelled each other out by being ultra defensive and not taking any risks.

I was at the Semi final of the Australian Aleague many years ago, Perth Glory went through with a golden goal and it was glorious, mind you if we had lost with a golden goal, would probably of been a bit crap:)
| Alternative to penalties on 13:31 - Jul 8 with 1065 views | surreyblue | Sudden death corners. Taken in ABBA structure. Play goes on for 30 seconds or until the ball goes out of play. The defending team can score goals on the break. First team to score wins. Don't need to go through both teams having a go. Brings an interesting tactical dynamic as well - do you take the first corner and hope to score? Or back yourself to defend it and then get two bites of the cherry? Do you leave more players up front to increase your chances of scoring on the break? | | | |

I quite like this idea. Then if you lose the shootout, you've still got a chance....!
