If you can stay up in Year 1*, Leeds are showing what you can then do in Year 2, with a decent foundation to build-on, a bigger budget, and targeting your money on bigger fish (Trafford, Wilson), with an extra year of parachute payments guaranteed too.
*I’m not being critical of our Recruitment 1.0 especially, given where we’d risen from so fast. |  |

I agree Lukic is a good signing and we need some ready made. But I think you a politely need a balance. We will need some hungry quality young players as well.
An I'm not sure you can make the argument you are for our last prem season recruitment.
We signed players like:
Szmodics
Connor Townsend
Kalvin Phillips
Ogbene
They were experienced and not signed for potential. The quality just wasn't there more than an experience Vs youth. |  |

It's about "experience" versus "potential" at Premier League level.
Obviously not every player fits the model, but so many last time were bought with the hope / expectation they could step up, rather than being proven (e.g. Lukic). Our biggest signings, for example, were Omari, Greaves, Delap, Clarke. | |

Apart from Charles, Fulham have signed players from clubs abroad that are foreign.
Ours might not have British passports but most were already based in the UK already, Leicester, Celtic, Fulham, Burnley.
Just the keepers and Emersonn so far showing better when it comes to Int recruitment and one of them was at Brighton for years.
I like Lukic but really not sure what point you’re making when it comes to Fulham vs our transfer business. [Post edited 8 Aug 21:38]

Did you read the OP? I'm comparing us signing Lukic to us signing someone like Charles, which we would've been much more likely to do in Recruitment 1.0.

Well you were the one that brought them up as direct comparisons, which is odd when they were they are actually selling club as well.
Anyway, Charles has been on the radar of Leeds and Palace as well, is nothing like the calibre of player we were signing in 2024. No mid table prem sides were buying the likes of Jacob Greaves. [Post edited 9 Aug 5:10]

I think the Championship all stars thing is overblown. We bought and loaned players from a few different sources. Yes, there were a few directly from the championship, and understandably those were players who had done really well in that division. But there were others from other leagues, some of whom had previously played in the champ, and some of whom had not.
I certainly think that our recruitment was very heavily weighted towards British and Irish players in a way that has not really worked in the premier league for many years. Teams of our size need to be getting the clearly better value that /can/ be achieved when acquiring from overseas, which the Brightons, Brentfords, Wolveses and Sunderlands have clearly managed to do, some more consistently than others.
Buying the best from the Championship can certainly be sound. Our failure in the Prem last time round doesn't prove otherwise, because (a) that wasn't the entirety of our strategy, (b) it's never likely to be the entirety of anyone's strategy, and (c) we acquired a few players, which is a tiny sample size. I would be surprised if Hackney and Charles do not prove a success in the Premier League this season.
Palace bought Wharton for around what we paid for Egeli, and he was also 19 at the time (albeit only just). There are plenty of ways to skin a cat. You can overpay in any of the different ponds we fish in. I'd rather overpay and get quality than overpay and get potential that never flourishes, or apparently get reasonable value on a player who then disappoints and we can't get rid of (because nobody wants him, or because his wages are too big, or because he fails his medical).
I like the look of our recruitment thus far. But as always, we have to reserve judgment until further down the track, and then avoid the temptation to be Captain Hindsight about it if some acquisitions don't work. |  | | |

It's agreed by all at the club that we went up ahead of schedule last time, and we spent a lot of money to bring our squad up to even a top championship level. That was the strategy that worked before, where we had to raise the base level of the team in order to solidify, now we can go up to the next level and build a premier league squad. |  |

Yep although we went down, in some ways the previous transfer policy was successful:-
1) sign younger players with resale value (rather than aging well paid pros), to avoids financial difficulties on relegation. Success - made a profit on Delap and Hutch.
2) a team that can bounce back in the championship after relegation. Success - bounced back at first attempt. | | | |

What word is there to take from it? We have signed more than 50% of our players from British clubs as your chart indicates.
Two out of the four from abroad would be Kipre and Scherpen, which were due to WBA and Brighton.
So, yes, I would still l like to be finding more international players in foreign leagues at a younger age and value. Emersonn and Van Oevelen so far out of the 10, which is clearly an improvement.
I do like the Lukic and Diop signings for sure but would be great in next few years if we are the first UK club to be getting them in and clearly we still need to keep working on our international scouting.
Your Charles Fulham point still makes no sense when you look at Fulham's strategy and body of work over the years as Lukic is a prime example of. | |

Sadly the most successful clubs consist mainly of foreign players. For whatever reason British players look like the next superstar and nine times out of ten fade into obscurity. End up as journeymen who never reach their full potential.
I'd say it's a lot to do with too much too soon.
They join a great club like Ipswich and one good season and they think their the dog's.
People like Messi and Ronaldo prove that if you ain't on the juice at the weekend and you keep yourself fit then you can go on well into your 30's. | | | |
