Saints fans view on Tonda Eckert 18:27 - Aug 18 with 2997 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

Weird that he's still in post for the new season, I was just wondering if anyone knows what the Saints fans think of all this (I've not been on any of their forums and don't know any)?

This guy has potentially cost them a place in the Prem, are they up in arms /hating on him (as I think I would be)... or seeing him as the victim vs the evil EFL?

Seems amazing to me that they've essentially been forced to go into a new season with the man who cost them a shot at the Prem still being in charge.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I hope they have a terrible start and he gets sacked. I don’t know how he has the nerve to show his smug face after getting caught cheating.

I've got a Southampton supporting friend. A very intelligent chap and not in the slightest bit hot headed. Usually have very measured and reasonable footballing conversations with him. His view is that Southampton were incredibly harshly done by and that the blame lies more with the EFL than with Eckert.

I think he expected Eckert to be out of a job after the hearing (or whatever process was taking place) and he seemed a bit disappointed by this but they've had tonnes of managers in recent years so wasn't too fussed. I've not spoken to him since it's become clear that Eckert is staying.

I'm not sure you should blame him it would be a shame to let it ruin your friendship.

How do some players show their faces after blatantly diving or feigning injury? How do some managers have the nerve to defend their players obvious theatrics by seemingly turning a blind eye to it?

Southampton got caught, they got punished and that should be the end of it. If they want to keep him on as manager then that is their call.

i would be interested to hear how your friend came by his viewpoint that they were " incredibly harshly done by ". In my book they got off extremely lightly. It's their fans I have some sympathy for.

I’m amazed he’s still in post. It should have been sorted weeks ago and for that level of cheating he should have gone. It’s a green light now for others to do the same.

There was a lot of love on here, and a fair degree of mutual respect between the fans of both teams, after the away game last season.

Of course, that was before the spying scandal emerged but they got probably the worst punishment of any team ever in being denied an attempt at promotion, so I don't get the subsequent contempt for them on here, let alone the hope that Eckert should be punished further, given the club and especially its fans have suffered enough.

The ones I've seen are all very Pro-Eckert for some bizarre reason.
Saw one the other day telling a Boro fan to move on and get over it.

Southampton may have been punished, but Eckert hasn’t yet. There have to consequences if the charges are upheld by the ongoing investigation. I’d be amazed if he gets to walk away without some serious penalties, including possibly a significant suspension. Otherwise what’s the point of having any sort of code of conduct?

No doubt they will punish him but it would have fairer to all involved to have accelerated his charges so that they matter had long since been settled.

By not doing so, it seems to me to have an element of failure in terms of natural justice, and in my view this makes it seem rather vindictive.

Agree in that this should have been dealt with long before the new season got underway. They've had over three months and the evidence will already have been compiled for the first (EFL) investigation.

I am in contact with a saints supporter of the same age as me i.e we can remember the days of Third Division South. He doesn’t have a big problem with the punishment they received, but he is a supporter of Eckert becaeus of the way he turned last season around for them.

I've thought ever since it came out that he'd organised spying missions ahead of two league games that he'd being doing it for a long time. It suited everybody to not prolong the investigation though. S'ton put their hands up to the identified cases and hoped they could take the punishment in their stride.

This must be it - they just see him as a really good manager.

I wonder what the reaction of fans on here would've been if McKenna and his team were caught doing this, and it cost us promotion. Or a less liked manager such as Paul Cook.

I suppose a saving grace for Eckert, with the fans and perhaps owners too, is that he came from a country where it was allowed/part of the culture. As much as I'd want to defend McKenna and put it down to one bad mistake, I'd totally understand calls for his sacking. Most jobs, if you'd cost the company more than a hundred million pounds you'd think getting fired would be the absolute minimum!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

From what I have read, there seems to be very much a siege mentality with their fans and the situation. The punishment was seen as excessive and has been overblown, however, this view has been more retrospective as at the time, they were seething at Eckert and the club. This unity has been driven by fans of other clubs (especially Boro) who haven't let it go.

They weren't happy with him Sunday though.

I have a few good Saints supporting friends. They weren't sure how it would work out with Eckert. However their owner has backed him, the fans on their pre season tour were 100% behind him, & the players have backed him. They're pretty much all behind him now & don't give a Donald Duck about anyone else's opinions or cheating chants!

Completely agree on the timescale. It’s nuts that this has been left to drift on much past the end of the season, never mind into the next one.

Cheating has been embedded in football for decades - from illegal payments to players to diving to feigning injury. Blind eyes have been turned countless times.

Spying has been going on for decades and decades - they got caught, they’ve been punished abd that should be the end.

So much for the club hierarchy's pious statement at the time that anyone at the club found to have been involved with enabling spygate would no longer be employed by them (paraphrase, can't remember the words 100% exactly).

Absolute bunch of hypocritical cheats. Dislike them even more now, hope they're R'd again.
