I think he has limited informal contacts within the club these days, particularly on transfers, but his piece on FarageGate and how he wrote about that suggests to me he's not a mouthpiece. He definitely didn't pull any punches there.
For me there's a big difference between relying on limited information and just doing what you are told. | |

And he has a very fine line to tread. He obviously wants to maintain the Papers independence to report stories but he doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him, particularly if that may ultimately be detrimental to the club's best interests | |

I don't really believe this, if all he did was continually put out what the club wanted people to hear and in 24-48 hours the exact opposite happened then a couple of things would happen.
Either he'd lose his credibility as a journo as people no longer trusted him or he'd stop reporting what he was told as it would make him look bad.
In this case he's pretty clear - Embolo was one of a number of strikers we have looked at, but no contact in recent days. And that no new bid has gone in for Palacios. | | | |
