'Israel has opened up tenders for the construction of some 1,200 settlement homes in a strategically important part of the occupied West Bank, as the government seeks to end any chance of a Palestinian state.

Plans to build on the so-called E1 area - east of Jerusalem - have long been internationally condemned.

The development would in effect divide the West Bank in two and isolate East Jerusalem.

The deadline for bids is days before Israel's October's general election, making it much harder for any future government to overturn any tenders issued.

Settlements are illegal under international law.'

All things being equal and the State of Israel would be borderline a rogue state and the international community would condem it outright. However, we know that where the State of Israel is concerned, things are not (and seemingly never will be) equal.
For decades its actions have been recognised by the UN as illegal, yet the majority of the world uses the term 'Occupied territories' with such a lack of consequence and figurative shoulder shrug that the Israeli State must feel untouchable. It certainly acts as if it does.
There is no denying the grevious wrongs that have been suffered by Jewish people for thousands of years and that anti-semitism (like all racism in whatever guise) is abhorrent and should be condemned outright.
And of course, like any State, Israel has the right to defend itself when attacked. However, let's come back to the 'all things being equal' premise. They're not. To criticise the actions of the State of Israel is all too readily conflated into anti-semitism by some. A ready-made and often deployed argument to justify (and allow a blind eye to be turned to) illegality. There it is for me, where the State of Israel is concerned, the dice are loaded.

Very well put.

Why the hell do the supposedly mature, civilised nations continuously look aside? It reflects very, very badly on the human race - it feels like everything is lies and a perpetual con trick, and though we might believe ourselves to be an advanced species the veneer is very thin.

It's always an emperor's new clothes type of self-deluding bullsh!t situation with regard to so many of these big issues - the apologists must be able to smell themselves, but carry on shamelessly.

Not really borderline at all, but yes agreed. It’s also a kick in the nuts to the idea that international rules based organisations such as the UN/ICC, etc., really hold much power/sway at all, given their failure here. Which then just undermines them further and further plays into the hands of rogue regimes like Israel’s/Iran’s, etc.

The international community should have enacted a boycott akin to South Africa's during the apartheid on Israel - and Russia for that matter. The west's concern about looking anti-semitic towards Israel, and maybe a slight concern about Islamic terrorists gaining power in Palestine if a two state solution is reached, plus wanting to have their cake and eating it with Russia is holding them back but to the detriment of those living in the respective countries on a daily basis.

This morning I made the mistake of reading the comments section of a media report into the drownings in Shoreham. The family were Palestinian refugees and the laughing emojis and "Oh dear, how sad...' comments made me sick to my stomach.

Wtf, is happening to this world?

I genuinely think there is room for some kind of education programme where the animals spouting this appalling inhumane disgusting bile are tracked and literally shown the poor kids bodies, and/or flown out to see the reality of life for people fleeing war and persecution.

I think there was an effort to do a version on channel 4 maybe. Guess it won't do anything, but it's that disgusting disregard for human life that hits decent folk hard in the stomach, this isn't about the rights and wrongs of specific political issues this is kids and hugely vulnerable people dead on the slab. Ghastly.

The perpetrators of this ethnic cleansing/genocide are beyond education. They are fully aware of what they are doing and so do their enablers. Louis Therouxs,The Settlers exposes this reality.

Oh, they are absolutely beyond help, I was more meaning those who are separated from it in many ways but still have the lack of humanity to say the things mentioned about being glad they're dead, one less to worry about and all the other absolutely heinous things they come out with. Dare I add 'machine gun at the channel tunnel' to that heinous list who need to see it with their own eyes?

Those people have always been around but because the internet is on tap and anonymous they feel entitled to comment without mercy. Previously they would’ve kept their comments limited to their own house or to trusted arseholes.

You’re probably right. There’s loads of examples throughout history of people being arseholes. I don’t know whether that’s reassuring or more depressing. At least if it was a recent phenomena with a clear cause there’d be some hope of a cure. But so suspect you’re right and it’s just down to everyone having a platform now if they want it.
