| 10 unstable thoughts on Man United 5-2 Ipswich Town 20:08 - Aug 30 with 1669 views | unstableblue | 1) These are the games we’ve hoped for and it was exciting to be back out at Old Trafford. I thought the lack of a fit Florentino and relying on Nunez was going to cost us. At the same time Man U fans were worried about the pace of their defence and midfield, including Shaw. 2) Without a doubt in that first half Town were excellent, we contained them with a back 4 only, despite Man U’s brilliant front 4 talent. Because we kept our shape, discipline with Maeda, Fatawu and the excellent Lukic staying deep when they needed to and pressing well. 3) But it was our ability to go forward with intent that was so positive. Enciso perhaps held onto the ball too long on a few occasions. But was overall excellent in that half. Maeda had a great chance. Enciso has to score on the break. And then Fatawu finally exposed the slow Shaw and we scored a brilliant goal with a world class finish from Leif, who then spurned an easier chance. 4) Then the game’s first major turning point. Nunez who had allayed fears with a brilliant first half display, slips and they break ruthlessly and Fernandez unleashes a thunderbolt shot, unstoppable and its 1-1 at half time. Not 1-0. That is brutality of the Premier League. 5) It was still a first half to be very proud and heartened by - carving out 4 shots on target and 3 big chances. But Emersonn had taken a knock to the knee and this was a blow. Scherpen had overall improved for me, with a world class save, but then some questionable distribution. However, we had not owned the duels in that half and some underlying metrics and Man U moments gave concern. 6) We started the second half pretty well and continued to have good shape, threat and were containing them. But Man U were beginning to ratchet up the gears. I think there was so much happening that ONeil perhaps failed to act quick enough. Then a second major turning point. Something that is being incorrectly reported and interpreted and for me too lightly accepted. Maguire deliberately handles the ball with two arms, to knock the ball down to then fire a shot that deflects off Greaves as an OG. Multiple Town players protest even before the shot. Everyone focusses on an opaque rule that it was an own goal so the handball doesn’t count, including our manager. But the actual VAR statement is that it was accidental handball hence why the goal stood. An outrage. 7) Despite this injustice, Town then lost their heads and composure, fuelling their own downfall. And the great work for 50mins is now remembered as a 5 goal capitulation. And as GON ageeed post match we did lose our structure and shape and this must be rectified. United have ridiculous front players and if you lose your way, you will get punished. But that should not be the whole story today. There are positives. Just crucially no points. 8) Pallacios comes on to shore us up - replacing Nunez - and I saw enough to be excited by what he can bring. 9) Further errors are then made across the pitch, goals shipped, and thus more defenders are added as we move to a five. I do think this could have perhaps have been done before the controversial second Man U goal. Thought Ouatarra did OK when he came on, and I can see him as a starter soon. 10) I was pleased we scored a second and Akpom got it. It was pleasing the town fans continued their brilliant support by cheering the boys at the end. And it was positive that GON summed up the game and lessons to be learnt so well at the end. A game that had so much promise for so long, that turned on two moments perhaps out of our hands, and then we capitulated badly. But many positives. And as Gary Neville stated “this town team have impressed me enough today to change my mind on their survival chances” (sic) Now let’s crank up a massive atmosphere on Friday night and beat LIVERPOOL. COYFB. [Post edited 30 Aug 20:12]

I think GON summed it up really well in that we completely lost our discipline and emotional control following their second. We lost our heads. And so all our shape and composure went out of the window. That included being susceptible to balls over the top as you say. But also any quickly paced balls across the pitch to allow overloads on the left. Mbeumo had been well controlled for 50 mins and then he became dangerously unmarked. And that wasn’t just a back four issue. But pressing and closing up front. The Emersonn loss was bigger than people realise.

I’m not sure. Man U were already ramping up their attacks, and the game was swinging in their favour. I think that unjust goal just accelerated something that was already happening. I think if it’s disallowed we have a chance to regroup and make changes. But it all moved too fast. The penalty comes 5 mins later, with the home crowd pushing them on following the goal. But without the Nunez slip and the Maguire handball we perhaps don’t lose our emotional control and our shape from 60mins onwards. [Post edited 30 Aug 22:07]

We’d still have lost but I think it would have been a slightly different end result without the handball fiasco. They lost their heads after that. Maybe the apparent injustice of it. Hence the emotional comment from GON. That’s one of the main takeaways from today. Strange and unfair things will happen again especially against the bigger (more favoured) teams but we need to handle it better | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The key thing is how the team reacts to today’s capitulation and loss of mental composure. Can they learn lessons and modify their tactics and behaviours following today. If say we get overrun by Liverpool Friday night in the second half and concede, can we regroup, go into a low block, and compose ourselves and then build some attack. Or are we going to unravel again and get all ragged. We’ve perhaps better players to cope this season, but we need to learn as a team. I’m fascinated to see how we tackle Liverpool. A draw or win would be huge for the season. [Post edited 30 Aug 22:54]

We played a lot of good football & had a real goal threat but we looked vulnerable whenever we lost the ball when attacking. This was also a feature 2 seasons ago - maybe PL teams are pacier on the counter & punish you more? Or are our defenders not good enough at this level? O'Shea isn't really a right back but we don't seem to have anyone better (Furlong isn't the answer) & do we need another centre back? As well as the obvious priority, a striker. Abraham may be hoping he gets a call from a better placed club than Town so I don't know if we have a plan B.

Yes BUT Well, if the backline decides to switch off defensively and admire LiVARpool's superior football; or if the team decides to throw in the towel once they score then I am afraid Isak, Muñoz and Gakpo will teach us another footballing lesson.

Our defence and defensive midfield will be facing Szobozlai MacAllister Munez Wirtz Gakpo Isak A huge test and the Liverpool manager will click soon, he’s good. Having Pallacios drilled for a week in the system, is going to be huge. But we’ll need to find a mental and defensive robustness that vanished in the old Trafford collapse. GON will have to get the mix of attack vs defence spot on and the home crowd need to be wild.
