Win the duels Friday! on 16:42 - Aug 31 by NthQldITFC
How does one judge the winning or losing of one of these duels, actually?
Is it first blood, expiry, or just browned trousers?
My standard silliness aside, what exactly does duel mean in modern football parlance?
It’s when the victor emerges with a severed limb raised to the baying crowd!!
The definitions are below for you NQI.
I think Fatawu on Shaw before our goal was one of the clearest of the afternoon we definitely won that one!! I wonder if Slabheads deliberate handball to block Akpom lifting the ball over him, was deemed a duel win for Man U?!
HOW GROUNDED DUELS ARE RECORDED AND CLASSIFIED A ground duel is recorded whenever two players contest the ball on the ground. The outcome is classified as won by the player who retains possession or gains the ball, lost by the other player, or neutral (the ball goes out of play or neither player clearly wins possession).
Football data providers typically split duel data into:
Ground duels: Contested ground-level challenges including tackle attempts, dribbling contests, and loose-ball challenges that occur between two players on the ground.
Aerial duels: Contested heading situations where both players jump to compete for a ball in the air.

I think we lost a fair few of the 1 on 1 physical contests in the second half, when Man U upped their intensity.
