Roberto Baggio's Death Penalty 21:58 - Sep 23 with 1250 viewsTresBonne

Italy played Brazil in the final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. After 120 minutes it was 0–0, so the World Cup was decided by a penalty shootout. Brazil led 3–2 when Baggio walked up to take Italy's fifth penalty. He needed to score to keep Italy alive. Instead, he struck the ball over the crossbar, and Brazil became world champions.

What makes the moment particularly painful is what had happened before it. Baggio had essentially been Italy's attacking hero during the knockout rounds, scoring five goals, including both goals in the semifinal against Bulgaria. He was also carrying a hamstring injury by the final.

After missing, Baggio simply stood there with his head lowered, almost completely motionless, while the Brazilian players celebrated behind him. That haunting image is why he became known as...

“The Man Who Died Standing” - not literally, of course, but as a description of how devastated and frozen he appeared in that moment.

The death penalty at that World Cup resulted from an own goal, not a missed penalty.

There’s a good docu out there about the two escobars of that era.

Genuinely shocking moment.

Yep, I was 9 so couldn’t get my head around it and probably didn’t appreciate how shocking it was either. Genuinely baffling that could happen.

Only equivalent I can think of is how Saddam let his son torture and persecute Iraqi footballers. That or didn’t Pele say he was scared he could be killed if he didn’t perform by the Brazilian leader at the time?

I think the North Korean lads who shipped seven against portugal went home to a pretty underwhelming welcome.

I dunno they edited coverage heavily and told the North Koreans that their lads romped home at the WC if I remember rightly.

I think that was a bit of an urban myth but I could be wrong.

I remember reading somewhere that they were promptly dispatched to a hard labour camp upon their return, but that could be bullshit as well.

Bit harsh really considering they nearly got a draw against Brazil.
