I was uninspired by us bringing in Gary O’Neil 19:02 - Oct 10 with 2757 viewsSwansea_Blue

I don’t know what I was thinking. Maybe getting carried away by mentions of managers like Thomas Frank and not really knowing much about the detail behind the headlines of what Gary had done before. On paper his record’s not exactly great.

But he fits us doesn’t he? Obviously that’s easy to say with 3 wins out of 6, but I’m talking more about his character and how he approaches it. He’s relatively low key, not too excitable and seems utterly focused on ‘the process’. Not a diva, quite humble, not arrogant, nice teeth. He’s a bit more outgoing than Kieran was, but there are many similarities around being grounded, humble and high work ethic.

Record's not exactly great? Kept 2 clubs up in the PL and has one year less managerial experience than KM. What are your workings out on that ?

It wasn't one to get the pulses racing but was immediately clear it was a clever appointment.

He's done exactly what we need to do. Keep a side up and improve players..

I liked his aggression today. All season we've played really front foot football so far.

He's a smart cookie.

Compared to some of the other names bandied around. He wasn’t on anyone’s radar, either here or whenever a manager change was mentioned anywhere. You never heard fans or pundits/press of any PL team say ‘Gary O’Neil’s the one for us’. IIRC, there was a lot of negativity about his appointment on here.

Same, completely underwhelmed. based on losing the Wolves dressing room. Very glad to be wrong on his appointment. Well done Ashton, It is why he gets the big bucks.

I'm impressed by his quiet confidence. Barely cracked a smile in the post game interview I saw, just very matter of fact, we deserved to win but we're gonna need a lot more than 9 points. Think he has a bit of a ruthless streak that we need for sure.

The set up of the team today was absolutely perfect. We were patient t in the first half against a team very good in possession. They scored from a low probability shot, but when we chased the games we did it very patiently. Excellent all round.

Me too. Couldn’t give too hoots about his briefs Norwich stint which strangely seemed to bother some, but it all just seemed a bit of a meh appointment - I couldn’t have been more wrong!

I like the cut of his gib. Calm and composed like McKenna, articulate but doesn’t over complicate things by what he says, simple straightforward approach but thoughtful and the players seem to buy in to what he wants.

Good starting line up, I get why he started Philogene and excellent subs. JC must be one on the most effective substitute players anywhere. Ouattara has the potential to be a star of the game.

To score 3 late goals to win all 3 of the games we have won is no fluke… they are fit, keep going and listen to what the manager wants.

Very happy to Gary here, and will feel the same when inevitably the going gets tough because I like everything about his approach and think he has way more about him than I actually gave him credit for.

I'll admit that I was underwhelmed by his appointment, but I am most definitely whelmed by the recruitment over the summer, and the way he has got an almost completely new team to gel and play decent football.

And on top of that he has improved Walle Egeli and Akpom beyond where anyone's expectations were at the end of last season.

I would uppie on much of what you say but I think it was more the expectations of style of play that concerned me. He clearly was a successful manager. I have been very pleasantly surprised at how he has us playing. Not at all ashamed to admit I was very wrong to be underwhelmed by getting him.

As much as I remain unhappy with Ashton for a lot of things, there is no denying he has made another excellent decision for the club. I would even go so far as saying I forgive Ashton for his failings/errors/mistakes. I just hope he has learnt things from them too.

By those who obviously had never looked at his record closely and also hadn't realised that he has less managerial experience then KM, I would imagine. I'm going to be honest and say he wasn't my first choice, that was the guy currently sitting in 2nd in the Championship. But I had no problems with the appointment.

GON is ticking all the right boxes and his experience as a manager at this level is showing through. As a club we are moving on, and hopefully up!

I was pleased with his appointment.

We had to act quickly and he was the best that was available. He also has the sort of lower Premier League experience which is just what we need. And I took the view that someone like a Jurgen Klopp just might not know how to deal with a team at our sort of level.

But of course, when we become an established top six team, we can maybe think about looking for a manager with a higher ceiling.

If McKenna had got this points haul, and has the players as organised as they are and playing these good patterns of play we would be shouting about his genius (rightly so)

We would also be permanently scared about him leaving for the next big job.

The fact that GON has achieved this with relatively little preparation, and limited time in the Ipswich set up, says an awful lot in my view. Really impressive how he has got the team playing with so many new faces.

I was not sure, felt we would be on the back foot - but not so,
Says a lot about how shallow I am that if his name had been Garinelli Oneillio I probably would have been more excited (for absolutely no tangible reason whatsoever)

To be fair I think most people would say the same, a long, long way to go. But so far, so good.

Fulham reminded me of us 2 years ago in that they don't seem to know how to get a game across the line whereas GON really goes for it at the end of games, we were unlucky not to get a point at Everton the way we played in the last ten minutes.

Too many draws last time, this win one, lose one approach is paying dividends so far although it would be nice to see us win a game comfortably in 90 minutes sooner rather than later.

I was the same. Not exciting exactly but I felt it was a smart appointment. Experienced, similar approach and style to McKenna, good track record with wolves and Bournemouth (despite how wolves spell ended).

Just felt exactly the right fit

When his name first got mentioned perhaps I was, but that was a me problem and nothing else. As soon as I did my research, it was clear he had the credentials to be a good manager at keeping a newly promoted club up.

You say "on paper his record's not exactly great" - I'd say the opposite. In people's uninformed opinions his record's not exactly great. On paper, it's actually really good considering that teams he's had to work with.

FWIW, we never would have stood a chance of getting Frank or Glasner. Neither of those would have any interest in a newly promoted club.

Quite agree with you there.

I noti ed our pre season under his management saw us playing a log more games, rather than all training ... we looked more settled as a squad / team much more quicker.

I heard the other day thst McKenna now has a analytics job, but not for a specific club but a different organisation in the game? I think given McKenna's skill sets, this job is probably much more suited to him and his minute attention to detail, than actual management. Personally, I think hed be daft to go back into management and im not sure hes actuslly proved himself at PL . Would a PL run that risk?

Daft to go back into management? I think that’s a little bit strong based on his track record. I imagine his new role is simply to learn and to keep himself involved until he’s ready to take another job. If however, he decides not to go to management, then it surely would only be based on personal reasons and not on anything to do with his suitability.
