Nunez last night 10:41 - Oct 21 with 1768 viewsNutkins_Return

In didn't see the first half but watched most of the second half if the u21 game.

Not a great watch to be honest but noticed Nunez was the only player wearing a normal match shirt with sponsor on.

Made me wonder if he was a late addition. Surprised no Jack Taylor. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

Poll: Who do we think McKenna (not you) will partner Greaves with ?

Why don't the U21 and U23 teams have their own shirt sponsors these days? It's been a few years since, but certainly under Evans and before they always had their own sponsorships. I know they can't have booze or gambling on their kits, but did a rule come in saying any youth team player can't have a sponsor on the front?

I still think an Ipswich B - bridge system playing in one of the higher-regional non-league systems is the way forward to help integrate our better youth team players, with our second string needing minutes, rather than loans to those leagues anyway for some, and having guys like Nunez not playing regularly when they need to. It's what any European club worth its salt does. Even Celtic have their second string playing in the Lowland leagues.

Those levels are just miles and miles off where players need to be at though, even to make it at L1/L2 level. As soon as a player goes on loan to a Bury Town or a Needham Market I assume they are someone the club doesn't expect to make it here. I am not sure there is really a lot of benefit in it at all. Now we are Cat 1 they are better off playing against their peers. And whilst the EFL Cup has been a humbling experience, it shows them the levels they need to reach and they will be better off for those games than rolling up to play against Hadleigh on a Saturday.

Our youths have been playing against their peers since the reserves system was dumped and frankly we've seen absolutely no benefit from that system, especially supporting and integrating into the First Team. Cat 1 youth players aren't generally looking any better than what we've seen before.

Our second string also isn't getting the minutes it needs, if these opponents are good enough for pre-season, when we're literally talking about getting minutes, getting partnerships and patterns down, and not ongoing? Seems like a waste to me.

All this Cat 1, Cat 2, U21, U23 stuff really is modern football nonsense, and as shown in those said competitions, our youth players are miles off it and the path to the first team now impossible. At least with a reserves system you give the second string a chance, and you get the better kids integrated into the first team by playing alongside senior pros.

We only got awarded Cat 1 status last year. The players aren't going to miraculously improve overnight. It's something that will take time - probably 5 years or more. Playing against the best academies and young players in the country is going to only be of benefit to them.

The idea the likes of Nunez, Kipre, Egeli etc are going to benefit from playing in a league against local non-league teams is for the birds. It's one thing strolling about against these teams in mid-July when we come back for pre-season and another expecting it to be useful in keeping players prepared to step into the PL in the thick of a season. Training competitively every day is far more useful.
